Lord, How My Numerous Foes Increase

Author: William Goode, 1762-1816 Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #9827 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 Lord, how my numerous foes increase, Excite my fears, disturb my peace! The powers of hell against me rise, And "God," they cry, "His help denies." 2 But Thou, my glory and my shield, My God, Thy powerful aid shalt yield; On Thee my steadfast hopes repose, To lift my head o’er all my foes. 3 To God I cried―my evening prayer Humbly implored Jehovah’s care; He vowed my wishes to fulfill, And heard me from His holy hill. 4 Then, with His guardian mercy blest, I laid my weary frame to rest; Sweet slumbers closed my peaceful eyes, Nor foes molest, nor fears surprise. 5 Again the shades of darkness flee, I wake, sustained, my God, by Thee; Thy guardian care renews my days, And claims my morning song of praise. 6 Now shall my heart its fears disclaim, I trust in faith Jehovah’s name; Though round my soul ten thousand rage, The Lord shall in my cause engage. 7 Rise, O my Savior, rise and spread, Thy shield, the shelter round my head; Thy cross the serpent’s wrath hath broke, And Satan falls beneath Thy stroke. 8 Salvation to the Lord belongs, His victory claims my highest songs; His blessing all His saints shall share, Then let His saints His praise declare. Psalm III

Hymnal: Poems on Subjects Chiefly Devotional, Vol. 2 #135 (1760) First Line: Lord, how my num'rous foes increase! Lyrics: I. Lord, how my num'rous foes increase! How fast my troubles rise! To thee, the sacred spring of peace, My wearied spirit flies. II. My num'rous foes awake my fears, While they exulting boast, "No heav'nly aid for him appears, And all his hopes are lost." III. But thou, my glory, and my shield, Wilt all my fears controul; A strong defence thy arm shall yield, And raise my drooping soul. IV. To God I breath'd my ardent cry, He, gracious heard my pray'r; It reach'd his sacred throne on high, And he remov'd my care. V. I laid me down and slept secure, I wak'd, for God was nigh; Sustain'd by his almighty pow'r, My guard his watchful eye. VI. What tho' ten thousand foes in arms Against me should appear; And war resound its dire alarms, I will not yield to fear. VII. Arise, O Lord, with saving pow'r In my defence engage; As oft thy potent arm before Has crush'd their impious rage. VIII. Salvation, Lord, is thine alone, And all thy saints shall find The bliss my thankful heart has known, A God forever kind. Scripture: Psalm 3 Languages: English
