Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 40 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 33 First Line: Blest is the nation where the Lord Lyrics: Blest is the nation where the Lord Hath fixed his gracious throne, Where he reveals his heav'nly word, And calls their tribes his own. His eye with infinite survey Does the whole world behold; He formed us all of equal clay, And knows our feeble mold. Kings are not rescued by the force Of armies from the grave; Nor speed nor courage of a horse Can the bold rider save. Vain is the strength of beasts or men, To hope for safety thence; But holy souls from God obtain A strong and sure defence. Psalm 33: Ye righteous, in the Lord rejoice

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 17 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 33 First Line: Ye righteous, in the Lord rejoice Lyrics: 1Ye righteous, in the Lord rejoice; it comely is and right, That upright men, with thankful voice, should praise the Lord of might. 2Praise God with harp, and unto him sing with the psaltery; Upon a ten-string’d instrument make ye sweet melody. 3A new song to him sing, and play with loud noise skilfully; 4For right is God’s word, all his works are done in verity. 5To judgment and to righteousness a love he beareth still; The loving-kindness of the Lord the earth throughout doth fill. 6The heavens by the word of God did their beginning take; And by the breathing of his mouth he all their hosts did make. 7The waters of the seas he brings together as an heap; And in storehouses, as it were, he layeth up the deep. 8Let earth, and all that live therein, with rev’rence fear the Lord; Let all the world’s inhabitants dread him with one accord. 9For he did speak the word, and done it was without delay; Established it firmly stood, whatever he did say. 10God doth the counsel bring to nought which heathen folk do take; And what the people do devise of none effect doth make. 11O but the counsel of the Lord doth stand for ever sure; And of his heart the purposes from age to age endure. 12That nation blessed is, whose God Jehovah is, and those A blessed people are, whom for his heritage he chose. 13The Lord from heav’n sees and beholds all sons of men full well: 14He views all from his dwelling-place that in the earth do dwell. 15He forms their hearts alike, and all their doings he observes. 16Great hosts save not a king, much strength no mighty man preserves. 17An horse for preservation is a deceitful thing; And by the greatness of his strength can no deliv’rance bring. 18Behold on those that do him fear the Lord doth set his eye; Ev’n those who on his mercy do with confidence rely. 19From death to free their soul, in dearth life unto them to yield. 20Our soul doth wait upon the Lord; he is our help and shield. 21Sith in his holy name we trust, our heart shall joyful be. 22Lord, let thy mercy be on us, as we do hope in thee.

There's a Wideness in God's Mercy

Author: Frederick W. Faber, 1814-1863 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 903 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 33 Lyrics: 1 There’s a wideness in God’s mercy Like the wideness of the sea; There’s a kindness in God's justice Which is more than liberty. There is plentiful redemption In the blood that has been shed; There is joy for all the members In the sorrows of the Head. 2 For the love of God is broader Than the measures of our mind, And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind. If our love were but more simple We should take him at his word, And our lives would be thanksgiving For the goodness of our Lord. 3 Troubled souls, why will you scatter Like a crowd of frightened sheep? Foolish hearts, why will you wander From a love so true and deep? There is welcome for the sinner And more graces for the good; There is mercy with the Savior, There is healing in his blood. Used With Tune: IN BABILONE

Psalm 33 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 30 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 33 First Line: O happy nation, where the Lord Lyrics: O happy nation, where the Lord Reveals the treasure of his word, And builds his church, his earthly throne! His eye the heathen world surveys, He formed their hearts, he knows their ways; But God their Maker is unknown. Let kings rely upon their host, And of his strength the champion boast; In vain they boast, in vain rely; In vain we trust the brutal force, Or speed, or courage, of a horse, To guard his rider or to fly. The eye of thy compassion, Lord, Doth more secure defence afford When death or dangers threat'ning stand: Thy watchful eye preserves the just, Who make thy name their fear and trust, When wars or famine waste the land. In sickness, or the bloody field, Thou our physician, thou our shield, Send us salvation from thy throne: We wait to see thy goodness shine; Let us rejoice in help divine, For all our hope is God alone.
