Carlton C. Buck

1907 - 1999 Hymnal Number: 6 Author of "We Want to Know, Lord Touch Our Minds" in Ten New Hymns for the 70's Carlton C. Buck served as the Pastor of the First Christian Church of Eugene, Oregon until 1960. Prior to this he held various pastorates in Christian Churches in Southern California, including a fourteen year pastorate in Fullerton from which he came to Eugene. A native of Salina, Kansas, he lived most of his adult life on the west coast. He received a Bachelor of Sacred Music Degree from the Los Angeles Bible Seminary, a Master of Arts and an honorary D.D. from San Gabriel College. He also worked at Whittier College and Chapman College. He is the author of three books, and of numerous sacred songs; and was a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. He is the author of the Hymn Society's "O Master Teacher, Teach us Now" in Fifteen New Christian Education Hymns, and "Bless Thou Our Christian Homes, O Lord" in Marriage and Family Life Hymns. --From, Ten New Hymns on the Ministry, 1966. Alice P. Kenney

Hymnal Number: 4 Author of "Creator God, Whose Glory Is Creation" in Ten New Hymns for the 70's Dr. Alice P. Kenney is chairman of the Department of Interstudies at Cedar Crest College, Allentown, Penna. She is a graduate of Middlebury College, with M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia. She is a member of Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in Albany, N.Y. Her principal extracurricular activity is the Bach Choir of Bethlehem, Penna. She has sung in the Columbia University Chapel Choir and in several church choirs; and has won recognition for several years in the hymn division of the U.C.C. Stewardship Competition. She is the author of The Gansevoorts of Albany (Syracuse University Press), and of numerous articles on history, education, and English and American literature. An article on "Private Worlds in the Middle Colonies: An Introduction to Human Tradition in American History" in New York History, January 1970, includes discussion of the significance of hymns for historical study. --Ten New Hymns for the 70's, 1970. Franklin P. Frye

1903 - 2003 Hymnal Number: 3 Author of "Tune Me In, O God" in Ten New Hymns for the 70's Frye, Franklin P. (New Hampshire, 1903-?). Was minister of the United Methodist Church of Bedford, New Hampshire. Received the Ph.D. degree in 1924 from Wesleyan University, and his S.T.B. from Boston University School of Theology in 1928; served churches in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, retiring in 1965 when pastor at Epworth Church, Worcester, Mass. --The Hymn Society, DNAH Archives ===================== Since [retirement] [Frye] has been active as a free lance preacher and writer. His hymn, "As we before thine altar bow," was published by the Hymn Society of America in Marriage and Family Life Hymns (1961) and it has been chosen for the new Christian Churches-American Baptist hymnal. Mr. Frye and his wife, Agnes, have a daughter and two sons and ten grandchildren. Avery D. Weage

b. 1897 Hymnal Number: 9 Author of "The Prince of Peace Goes Forth to Bear" in Ten New Hymns for the 70's Avery D. Weage, a retired minister of the United Church of Christ, lives in Scribner, Nebraska. From 1927 to 1967 he served churches in Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, New York and Nebraska. He is a graduate of the University of Washington and the Chicago Theological Seminary. His avocations are writing, music and gardening. He has written three books of poetry and a biography. He was born in 1897, married Ella Dungan in 1926 [ . . . ] Ella passed away in 1962. In October 1963, Mr. Weage married Rickie Thernes, of Scribner. Miriam Drury

1900 - 1985 Hymnal Number: 1 Author of "Give Us a Dream to Share" in Ten New Hymns for the 70's Miriam Drury (1900-1985) was a native of California and lived there most of her life. Her husband was a faculty member at San Francisco Theological Seminary. After retirement, she lived in Monte Vista Presbyterian Retirement Home, Pasadena, California. Her hymn "Walk Tall, Christian" was also included in The Worshipbook (1970). Drury composed many complete hymns (words and music), anthems, and poems for both children and adults. She was an award-winning composer for the Hymn Society of America and a number of her hymns were published by the society. The Presbyterian Hymnal Companion 1993 ============================= Miriam Drury (Mrs. Clifford Merrill Drury) is a native of California where she has lived most of her life. Her home is in Pasedena. She has long been interest in writing stories, poems and songs for children as well as articles for adults. Marion James

b. 1913 Hymnal Number: 8 Author of "The Church of Christ Has Work to Do" in Ten New Hymns for the 70's James, Marion (Mrs. Roy William Price). (1913--?). Aurora, Illinois; communicant of Trinity Episcopal Church. A former journalist, she earned an A.B. from Vassar College. --The Hymn Society, DNAH Archives ================== Marion James (Mrs. Roy William Price) is the author of two books of verse, juvenile stories, and poems, and over fifty sacred and secular lyrics. Her children's hymns are published by the Oxford Press, England, the United Church of Canada, Seabury Press, and the Lutheran Church of America, with recordings by the latter, 1966-1969. Her hymn text, "O Jesus, Who Once Heard the Plea", with music by John Leo Lewis, published by the Hymn Society in 1961, appeared in the 1968 Advent Christian Hymnal. Also in collaboration with Mr. Lewis, she won the Drexel Award of 1955, second place in the Moravian Contest of 1956, and the Harvey Gaul Award of 1957. The mother of three children, she resides with her husband in Aurora, Illinois, where she is a communicant of Trinity Episcopal Church. She is a graduate of the Conservatory of Music, Millikin University, Decatur, Illinois.
