Now the sun at noon of day

Author: John Brownlie Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: Now the sun at noon of day, Shines upon the earth below; And the fields in bright array, Spread their beauty in its glow;-- Jesus, Lord, when noon controls, May Thy beauty grace our souls. Weary, when the noon oppressed, Thou didst rest upon the well, And a sinning soul was blest, As Thy words divinely fell;-- Lord, Thy living water give, That our thirsting souls may live. 11 Once at noon, a midnight dread Blotted out the earth and sky, For the God-man bowed His head, And creation saw Him die;-- May Thy death our dying be, May we rise, O Christ, with Thee. In Thy realm of light above, Rising suns, nor setting, shine; Thou, Thyself, O Lord of Love, Ceaseless pour'st Thy light divine;-- Lord, where noontide shines alway Bring our souls, we humbly pray.

Light more glorious than the sun

Author: John Brownlie Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: Light more glorious than the sun Dawns upon our fearful night, 44 And the longed-for day begun, Pours its everlasting light; Christ is risen, with gladness then Hail His rising, sons of men. Women came at early gloom, Sad at heart, and full of fears, Bearing to the dismal tomb, Spices, mingled with their tears; "Wherefore weep?" the angel said, "Christ is risen from the dead." Lone disciples all amazed Sought the place where He had lain, And they knew not as they gazed, That their Lord had risen again Mortals, hail the day begun, Christ hath risen, our glorious Sun. Mortals, lo! the Christ hath risen, God-man He, and Lord of life; Broken now is hades' prison, Sin is wounded in the strife; Lo, we hail Thy rising, now, Christ, the King immortal, Thou.

In a garden, man was placed

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: In a garden,--man was placed, Meet abode for innocence, With his Maker's image graced; Sin crept in, and drove him thence, Through the world, a wretch undone, Seeking rest, and finding none. In a garden,--on that night, When our Saviour was betray'd, With what world-redeeming might, In His agony He pray'd! Till He drank the vengeance up, And with mercy fill'd the cup. In a garden,--on the Cross, When the spear His heart had riven, 264 And for earth's primeval loss, Heaven's best ransom had been given; Jesus rested from his woes, Jesus from the dead arose. Here, not Eden's bowers are found, Nor forlorn Gethsemane, Nor that calm sepulchral ground, At the foot of Calvary; Yet this scene may well recall Sweet remembrances of all. Emblem of the Church below! Where the Spirit and the Word, Fall like dews, like breezes blow, And the Lord God's voice is heard, Walking in the cool of day, While the world is far away. Emblem of the Church above! Where, as in their native clime, 'Midst the garden of his love, Rescued from the rage of time, Saints, as trees of life shall stand, Planted by His own right hand. Round the fair enclosure here, Flames no cherub's threatening sword; Ye, who enter, feel no fear: Roof'd by heaven, with verdure floor'd, Breathing balm from blossoms gay, This is Paradise to-day. Yet one moment meditate On our parents' banishment, 265 When from Eden's closing gate, Hand in hand, they weeping went, Spikenard groves no more to dress, But a thorn-set wilderness. Then, remember Him who laid Uncreated splendour by, Lower than the angels made, Fallen man to glorify; And from death beyond the grave, Unto life immortal save. Think of Him,--your souls He sought, Wandering, never to return; Hath He found you?--At the thought, Your glad hearts within you burn: Then your love, like His, extend; Be like Him, the sinner's friend. Ye, who smile in rosy youth, Glow with manhood, fade through years, Send the life, the light, the truth, To dead hearts, blind eyes, deaf ears; And your very pleasures make Charities for Jesus' sake. So shall gospel-glory run, Round the globe to every clime, Brighter than the circling sun; Hastening that millennial time, When the earth shall be restored, As the garden of the Lord. Glorious to our watching eyes

Author: John Brownlie Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: Glorious to our watching eyes, On the blessed first of days, See the radiant sun arise, Clad in glowing garb of praise; And the angel's words have given Hope to earth, and joy to heaven. 46 Ah, the darkness of the night; Ah, the sighing, and the pain; But the Rising of the Light, Bids us dry our tears again; For our Light, ascending brings Joy and healing in His wings. He is risen, even as He said,-- Great the joy the vision gives; Tell the soul to gladness dead, That the Lord Immortal lives; And the dead to hope shall spring Heavenward, as on tireless wing.

Open wide the gate of heaven

Author: John Brownlie Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: Open wide the gate of heaven, Let the glorious Victor in, 50 For to Him alone 'tis given, Who hath quelled the boast of sin-- To ascend the azure height, Girt with an all-conquering might. Night and darkness flew before Him, Sin and death before Him fell; Angel hosts in bliss, adore Him! Who hath spoiled the depths of hell, And ascends the azure height, Girt with an all-conquering might. Ah, the mocking and deriding, Ah, the Cross on which He hung, And the night, God's presence hiding, While the darts of hell were flung,-- Now He mounts the azure height, Girt with an all-conquering might. Hail Him now, His task completed, All He strove for man to win; Victor, Who the foe defeated-- Death, and hell, and vaunting sin, For He mounts the azure height, Girt with an all-conquering might. Jesus, Lord of life undying! From the throne where Thou art set, Heed Thy followers who are sighing, But can ne'er Thy love forget, And beyond the azure height, Raise them by Thy saving might,

Ah, the trembling of that day

Author: John Brownlie Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: Ah, the trembling of that day, Ah, the terror, and the dread; When the heavens are rolled away, And the Judge of quick and dead In the judgement shall not fail;-- Who shall not his sin bewail? Spare me, Lord, Thy creature spare, When to judgement I am borne; I have sinned, but, Lord forbear, Every sin I humbly mourn; Thou alone art sinless! Save: Grant the mercy that I crave. Yea, my tears refuse to flow, True repentance I have none;-- Were I contrite, I should know All the evil I have done; In my blindness mercy give, Speak the word and I shall live.

Rise, thou glorious orb of day

Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: Rise, thou glorious orb of day, Draw the curtains from the sky Lyrics: Rise, thou glorious orb of day, Draw the curtains from the sky; Let thy light in glad array, All creation beautify; Bid the fears of darkness born, Melt before the light of morn. Light transcendent! fill the skies, Glorious Orb of heavenly light! Take the darkness from our eyes, Fill our souls with visions bright. Jesus, Light of lights, appear, Rise upon our souls with cheer. From Thy throne of splendour bright, Shed Thy glory far abroad; Let the wanderers in their plight See the path that leads to God, And upon their pathway shine, Heavenly Orb of light Divine. 7 There no sun illumes the day, Where the wanderers find their rest; Moon nor stars their light display In the kingdom of the blest; For the Christ Himself is Sun, And the day is never done.
