Asa Hull

1828 - 1907 Composer of "[Jesus commands us to forgive]" in Tears and Triumphs Asa Hull USA 1828-1907. Born in Keene, NY, he became a music publisher in New York City. He married Emma F Atherton, and they had a daughter, Harriett. He wrote many tunes and authored temperance rallying songs. He published 33 works, of which 21 were songbooks, between 1863-1895. He died in Philadelphia, PA. John Perry

George Nelson Allen

1812 - 1877 Person Name: Geo. N. Allen Composer of "MAITLAND" in Dortch's Gospel Voices George Nelson Allen (1812-1871), studied at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Oh OH and with Lowell Mason in Boston. Allen gave a strong musical foundation to Oberlin College in its earliest years; in addition to being Professor of Music he also served as Professor of Geology and Natural History, Secretary and Treasurer. In 1835 he compiled The Oberlin Social and Sabbath Hymn Book, in which appeared his most well known tune MAITLAND (also known as CROSS AND CROWN or WESTERN MELODY) with the text "Must Jesus bear the cross alone?". This was adapted by Thomas A. Dorsey in 1938 for his hymn "Precious Lord, take my hand". hand." He composed anthems and wrote some additional music for Isaac Woodbury's Oratorio "Absalom." 1853 - 1901 Person Name: M. W. Knapp Author of "I must forgive, I do forgive" in Dortch's Gospel Voices Born: March 27, 1853, Albion, Michigan. Died: December 7, 1901, Cincinnati, Ohio, of typhoid fever. Buried: Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio. At age 17, Knapp began studies at a Methodist college in Albion, Michigan. He worked on the family farm in the summer, studying Greek and Latin at night, and attending classes in Albion in the winter. In 1877, the Methodist Michigan Conference assigned him a circuit. He went on to a career in ministry, founding the magazine God’s Revivalist in 1888; the International Holiness Union and Prayer League in 1897; and God’s Bible School (later known as God’s Bible School and College) in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1900. His works include: Christ Crowned Within, 1886 The Double Cure Out of Egypt into Canaan, or Lessons in Spiritual Geography Diary Letters; A Missionary Trip Through the West Indies and to South America The River of Death and Its Branches Pentecostal Preachers Revival Kindlings, 1890 Revival Tornadoes; or, Life and Labors of Rev.
