Only God Can Bring Us Gladness

Author: Johan O. Wallin Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #5217 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Lyrics: 1. Only God can bring us gladness, Only God can give us peace; Joys are vain that end in sadness, Joy divine shall never cease. Mid the shade of want and sorrow Undisturbed, our hearts rejoice; Patient, wait the brighter morrow; Faithful, heed the Father’s voice. 2. As the stars in order going, All-harmonious, He doth move; Heavenly calm and comfort showing, Comes the healing word of love. Who the word of wisdom heareth Feels the Father Love within, Where as dawn the shadow cleareth, Love outshines the night of sin. 3. So we find the true atonement, Know in God the perfect Friend; For in love is our atonement, Where all hearts in Him may blend. Here from prisoning pain and sorrow Have we all a sure release, Only God can bring us gladness, Only God can give us peace. Languages: English Tune Title: GLÄDJE UTAN GUD EJ FINNES

Johan Olof Wallin

1779 - 1839 Person Name: Johan Olaf Wallin Author of "Only God can bring us gladness" Johan Olaf Wallin was born at Stora Tuna, in 1779, and early displayed his poetical powers. In 1805, and again in 1809, he gained the chief prize for poetry at Upsala. In the latter year he became pastor at Solna; here his ability as a preacher was so striking that he was transferred to Stockholm, in 1815, as "pastor primarius," a title for which we have no exact equivalent. In 1818 he was made Dean of Westeras, and set about the task of editing a revised hymn-book for the whole of Sweden. This task he completed in 1819, and published it as, Den Swenska Psalmboken, af Konungen gillad och stadfästad (The Swedish hymn-book, approved and confirmed by the King). To it he contributed some 150 hymns of his own, besides translations and recastings; and the book remains now in the form in which he brought it out. It is highly prized by the Swedes, and is in use everywhere. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, p. 1000 (1907)

Gustaf Düben

1628 - 1690 Composer of "GLADNESS" in Christian Science Hymnal (Rev. and enl.) Gustaf Düben (also Gustav) (1628 – 1690) was a Swedish organist and composer. Düben was born and died in Stockholm. He was the grandson of the German-born Andreas Düben, who had been organist at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, and son of the composer and court kapellmeister Anders Düben (the Younger)]. In 1663, he succeeded his father as both hovkapellmästare, director of the Royal Swedish Court Orchestra, and organist of the German St Gertrud Church in Stockholm. He was the father of four children: Gustav von Düben the Younger (1659-1726), Joachim von Düben the Elder (1671-1730), Emerentia von Düben (1669-1743) and Anders von Düben (the Younger) (1673-1738). Gustaf the younger and Anders the Younger appears to have been the only of his children who followed in his father's footsteps as a composer, courtier and eventually kapellmeister. The Düben collection of manuscripts includes many unicae of German baroque music. --en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
