1856 - 1938 Person Name: J. M. Black Composer of "[Since Christ my soul from sin set free]" in Revival Hymns and Choruses James Milton Black USA 1856-1938 Born in South Hill, NY, Black was an American hymn composer, choir leader and Sunday school teacher. He worked, lived,and died in Williamsport, PA. An active member, he worked at the Pine Tree Methodist Episcopal Church there. He married Lucy Love Levan. He started his music career with John Howard of New York and Daniel B. Towner of the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. He edited a dozen gospel song books and wrote nearly 1500 songs. He also served on the commission for the 1905 Methodist Hymnal. John Perry

Charles J. Butler

Author of "Where Jesus Is, Tis Heaven" in Revival Hymns and Choruses Charles J Butler USA 1860- Butler, a Methodist, speaks of a voyage he took from his home, Camden, NJ, as a bachelor, to Britain around 1894, stating he roamed around the British Isles for 14 months through Scotland, Ireland, Britain, and Paris, dealing with ship stewards, street urchins, and visiting famous sights. He wrote about his trip in 1901. He later resided in Philadephia and was a salesman and musician. He wrote “Heart Melodies #3” with Charles Bentley (1897). He is possibly the listed secretary of the YMCA in Philadelphia in 1920. John Perry

Known only from his "Since Christ Jesus my soul from sin set free" (Refrain: "O Hallelujah, yes, 'tis heaven"). This was copyrighted by James M.
