The Shining City

Author: Fanny Church Hymnal: The Little Sower for Sabbath Schools #131 (1870) First Line: There is a shining city Refrain First Line: Oh! Heaven, sweet heaven Lyrics: 1 There is a shining city, Beyond the flowing tide; A city that in glory, Forever shall abide. No war nor sound of striving, Can ever enter there, But there is peace enduring, And all is bright and fair. Chorus: Oh! Heaven, sweet heaven, Land of joy and peace, O! fair and shining city, Where mortal woes shall cease. 2 Within this glorious city There stands a throne of light, And round it are the Angels, With crowns of jewels bright. There too are many children, A happy, happy throng, And to the great All Father, They raise their joyful song. [Chorus] 3 There is the sweetest music In all that pleasant land; And angels pause and listen, To hear that white-robed band. They sing how Jesus saved them, From woe and toil and pain; They tell the wondrous story, Of Christ for sinners slain. [Chorus] 4 O happy, happy children! O world beyond the grave! They reached that land thro' Jesus, Who died their souls to save. All who would gain that city, All who would sing that song, Come give your hearts to Jesus, And join that joyful throng. [Chorus] Tune Title: [There is a shining city]
