By Gracious Powers (Von guten Mächten treu und still umgeben)

Author: Dietrich Bonhoeffer, 1906-1945; Fred Pratt Green, 1903-2000 Meter: 11.10.11.10 with refrain Appears in 4 hymnals First Line: By gracious pow'rs so wonderfully sheltered (Von guten Mächten treu und still umgeben) Refrain First Line: By gracious pow'rs so faithfully protected (Von guten Mächten wunderbar geborgen) Lyrics: ENGLISH - 1 By gracious pow'rs so wonderfully sheltered, and confidently waiting come what may, we know that God is with us night and morning, and never fails to greet us each new day. Refrain: By gracious pow'rs so faithfully protected, so quietly, so wonderfully near, I'll live each day in hope, with you beside me, and go with you through every coming year. 2 Yet is this heart by its old foe tormented, still evil days bring burdens hard to bear; O give our frightened souls the sure salvation, for which, O Lord, you taught us to prepare. [Refrain] 3 And when this cup you give is filled to brimming with bitter suff'ring, hard to understand, we take it thankfully and without trembling, out of so good and so beloved a hand. [Refrain] --- GERMAN - 1 Von guten Mächten treu und still umgeben, behütet und getröstet wunderbar, so will ich diese Tage mit euch leben undmit euch gehen in ein neues Jahr. Kehrvers: Von guten Mächten wunderbar geborgen, erwarten wir getrost, was kommen mag. [Kehrvers] Topics: Assurance; Comfort; Courage; Deliverance; Fear; God's Presence; Grace; Hope; New Year; Renewal; Salvation; Sanctuary; Suffering; Surrender Scripture: Romans 8:37-39 Used With Tune: [Von guten Mächten treu und still umgeben]

Fred Pratt Green

1903 - 2000 Person Name: Fred Pratt Green, 1903-2000 Translator of "By Gracious Powers (Von guten Mächten treu und still umgeben)" in Community of Christ Sings The name of the Rev. F. Pratt Green is one of the best-known of the contemporary school of hymnwriters in the British Isles. His name and writings appear in practically every new hymnal and "hymn supplement" wherever English is spoken and sung. And now they are appearing in American hymnals, poetry magazines, and anthologies. Mr. Green was born in Liverpool, England, in 1903. Ordained in the British Methodist ministry, he has been pastor and district superintendent in Brighton and York, and now served in Norwich. There he continued to write new hymns "that fill the gap between the hymns of the first part of this century and the 'far-out' compositions that have crowded into some churches in the last decade or more." --Seven New Hymns of Hope , 1971. Used by permission.
