My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less

Author: Edward Mote Meter: 8.8.8.8 with refrain Appears in 1,096 hymnals Topics: Faith and Aspiration First Line: My hope is built on nothing else Refrain First Line: On Christ the solid Rock, I stand Lyrics: 1 My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' love and righteousness; I dare not trust this earthly frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name. Refrain: On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand. 2 When shadows veil my Savior's face, I rest upon unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. [Refrain] 3 Christ's oath and covenant and blood support me in the rising flood; When all around my soul gives way, Christ then is all my hope and stay. [Refrain] 4 When Christ shall come with trumpet sound, oh, may I then in Love be found, Dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne. [Refrain] Scripture: Revelation 11:14 Used With Tune: SOLID ROCK

O for a Closer Walk with God

Author: William Cowper Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,374 hymnals Topics: Faith and Aspiration Lyrics: 1 O for a closer walk with God, a calm and heav'nly frame, a light to shine upon the road that leads me to the Lamb. 2 Return, O Holy Dove, return, sweet messenger of rest; I hate the sins that made thee mourn and drove thee from my breast. 3 The dearest idol I have known, whate'er that idol be, help me to tear it from thy throne and worship only thee. 4 So shall my walk be close with God, calm and serene my frame, so purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb. Scripture: Genesis 8:11 Used With Tune: LIVERPOOL

Chas. H. Gabriel

1856 - 1932 Person Name: Charles H. Gabriel Topics: Walking with God Aspiration and Consecration; Aspiration and Consecration Composer of "HIGHER GROUND" in The Celebration Hymnal Pseudonyms: C. D. Emerson, Charlotte G. Homer, S. B. Jackson, A. W. Lawrence, Jennie Ree ============= For the first seventeen years of his life Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (b. Wilton, IA, 1856; d. Los Angeles, CA, 1932) lived on an Iowa farm, where friends and neighbors often gathered to sing. Gabriel accompanied them on the family reed organ he had taught himself to play. At the age of sixteen he began teaching singing in schools (following in his father's footsteps) and soon was acclaimed as a fine teacher and composer. He moved to California in 1887 and served as Sunday school music director at the Grace Methodist Church in San Francisco. After moving to Chicago in 1892, Gabriel edited numerous collections of anthems, cantatas, and a large number of songbooks for the Homer Rodeheaver, Hope, and E. O. Excell publishing companies. He composed hundreds of tunes and texts, at times using pseudonyms such as Charlotte G. Homer. The total number of his compositions is estimated at about seven thousand. Gabriel's gospel songs became widely circulated through the Billy Sunday-Homer Rodeheaver urban crusades. Bert Polman

Oscar Ahnfelt

1813 - 1882 Person Name: Oskar Ahnfelt, 1813-1882 Topics: Aspiration Composer of "BLOTT EN DAG" in Ambassador Hymnal Oscar Ahnfelt (1813 -1882) was a Swedish singer and composer. He wrote the music for many of Lina Sandell’s hymns. A pietist, he raised some concern in the State-church, but his music was apparently so popular, King Karl XV gave him permission to play and sing in both of his kingdoms. Ahnfelt’s music has spread throughout the world; two of his best-known songs are “Children of the Heavenly Father” and “Day by Day.” Laura de Jong

Henry Thomas Smart

1813 - 1879 Person Name: Henry Smart Topics: Christian Experience Aspiration Composer of "FORWARD" in The Hymnal Henry Smart (b. Marylebone, London, England, 1813; d. Hampstead, London, 1879), a capable composer of church music who wrote some very fine hymn tunes (REGENT SQUARE, 354, is the best-known). Smart gave up a career in the legal profession for one in music. Although largely self taught, he became proficient in organ playing and composition, and he was a music teacher and critic. Organist in a number of London churches, including St. Luke's, Old Street (1844-1864), and St. Pancras (1864-1869), Smart was famous for his extemporizations and for his accompaniment of congregational singing. He became completely blind at the age of fifty-two, but his remarkable memory enabled him to continue playing the organ. Fascinated by organs as a youth, Smart designed organs for important places such as St. Andrew Hall in Glasgow and the Town Hall in Leeds. He composed an opera, oratorios, part-songs, some instrumental music, and many hymn tunes, as well as a large number of works for organ and choir. He edited the Choralebook (1858), the English Presbyterian Psalms and Hymns for Divine Worship (1867), and the Scottish Presbyterian Hymnal (1875). Some of his hymn tunes were first published in Hymns Ancient and Modern (1861). Bert Polman
