What a Friend We Have in Jesus

Author: Joseph M. Scriven Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1,721 hymnals Topics: Brevity & Frailty of Life; Brevity & Frailty of Life Lyrics: 1 What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! Oh, what peace we often forfeit, oh, what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer. 2 Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer. 3 Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge! Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In his arms he'll take and shield you; you will find a solace there. Scripture: Matthew 11:28-30 Used With Tune: BEACH SPRING

When on my day of life the night is falling

Author: J. G. Whittier, 1807-1892 Hymnal: Methodist Hymn and Tune Book #468a (1917) Topics: Brevity of Life; Life Brevity of Lyrics: 1 When on my day of life the night is falling, And in the winds from unsunned spaces blown I hear far voices out of darkness calling My feet to paths unknown-- 2 Thou, who hast made my home of life so pleasant, Leave not its tenant when its walls decay; O Love Divine, O Helper ever present, Be Thou my strength and stay! 3 Be near me when all else is from me drifting Earth, sky, home's pictures, days of shade and shine, And kindly faces to my own uplifting The love which answers mine. 4 I have but Thee, my Father! let Thy Spirit Be with me then to comfort and uphold; No gate of pearl, no branch of palm I merit, Nor street of shining gold. 5 Suffice it if my good and ill unreckoned, And both forgiven through Thy abounding grace I find myself by hands familiar beckoned Unto my fitting place. 6 Some humble door among Thy many mansions, Some sheltering shade where sin and striving cease, And flows for ever through heaven's green expansions The river of Thy peace. 7 There from the music round about me stealing I fain would learn the new and holy song. And find at last, beneath Thy trees of healing, The life for which I long. Languages: English Tune Title: DIADEMA

Life is the time to serve the Lord

Hymnal: Book of Worship (Rev. ed.) #297 (1870) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Brevity of Life; Life Brevity of Lyrics: 1 Life is the time to serve the Lord, The time t'ensure the great reward; And while the lamp holds out to burn, The vilest sinner may return. 2 Life is the hour that God has given To ’scape from hell and fly to heaven; The day of grace, and mortals may Secure the blessings of the day. 3 Then what my thoughts design to do, My hands, with all your might pursue, Since no device, nor work is found, Nor faith, nor hope, beneath the ground. 4 There are no acts of pardon past In the cold grave, to which we haste, But darkness, death, and long despair Reign in eternal silence there. Felix Mendelssohn chose him to play the organ part at the first performance of Elijah in Birmingham, England, in 1846. Gauntlett is said to have composed some ten thousand hymn tunes, most of which have been forgotten.
