Be Still, My Soul

Author: Katharina von Schlegel; Jane Borthwick Meter: 11.10.11.10.11.10 Appears in 187 hymnals Topics: Calmness and Serenity First Line: Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side Lyrics: 1 Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side. Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain; leave to your God to order and provide; in every change God faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: your best, your heavenly friend through thorny ways leads to a joyful end. 2 Be still, my soul: your God will undertake to guide the future, as in ages past. Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake; all now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know the Christ who ruled them while he dwelt below. 3 Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on when we shall be forever with the Lord, when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored. Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past, all safe and blessed we shall meet at last. Scripture: Psalm 46:10 Used With Tune: FINLANDIA

A calm and gentle quiet reigns tonight

Author: David H. Smith, 1844-1904 Hymnal: The Hymnal #66 (1956) Topics: Calm Lyrics: 1 A calm and gentle quiet reigns tonight; There's not a cloud upon a single brow; And every heart is swelling with delight, For peace is brooding sweetly o'er us now; And every bosom feels the thrilling touch Of spirit and the touch of holy fire, The precious boon for which we pray so much, In answer to our earnest hearts desire. 2 We thank the Lord that we have lived to see The good he bringeth in this latter day; Our earnest prayers to him shall ever be To keep our feet within the narrow way, For we have walked in darkness hitherto, And had but just a little ray of light, But now the blessings fall as morning dew, And truth is shining as the morning bright. 3 We must not wait for now the time is ours, And if I wait, another waits for me; We see the workings of contending powers; The darkness and the holy light we see. Then let us render service to the Lord, And drive whose clouds of fear and doubt away, That we may all rejoice with one accord Until the dawning of that perfect day. Scripture: Psalm 107:29-32 Tune Title: A CALM AND GENTLE QUIET

Claude Goudimel

1514 - 1572 Topics: Peace (Inner, Calmness, Serenity Harmonizer of "GENEVAN 42" in Voices United The music of Claude Goudimel (b. Besançon, France, c. 1505; d. Lyons, France, 1572) was first published in Paris, and by 1551 he was composing harmonizations for some Genevan psalm tunes-initially for use by both Roman Catholics and Protestants. He became a Calvinist in 1557 while living in the Huguenot community in Metz. When the complete Genevan Psalter with its unison melodies was published in 1562, Goudimel began to compose various polyphonic settings of all the Genevan tunes. He actually composed three complete harmonizations of the Genevan Psalter, usually with the tune in the tenor part: simple hymn-style settings (1564), slightly more complicated harmonizations (1565), and quite elaborate, motet-like settings (1565-1566). The various Goudimel settings became popular throughout Calvinist Europe, both for domestic singing and later for use as organ harmonizations in church. Goudimel was one of the victims of the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of Huguenots, which occurred throughout France. Bert Polman

George William Warren

1828 - 1902 Topics: Peace (Inner, Calmness, Serenity Composer of "NATIONAL HYMN" in Voices United George W. Warren (b. Albany, NY, 1828; d. New York, 1902) received his general education at Racine College in Wisconsin, but as a musician he was largely self-trained. An organist in a number of Episcopal churches, he played the organ for thirty years (1870-1900) at St. Thomas Church in New York City. Warren composed anthems and liturgical service music; his hymn tunes were collected in Warren's Hymns and Tunes as Sung in St. Thomas Church (1888). Bert Polman

M. M. Wells

1815 - 1895 Topics: Calmness Composer of "GUIDE" in Laudes Domini Converted to Christianity as a youth at a mission in Buffalo, New York, Marcus Morris Wells (b. Cooperstown, NY, 1815; d. Hartwick, NY, 1895) spent most of his life near Hartwick as a farmer and maker of farm implements. He is remembered in hymnody for writing both the text and tune of "Holy Spirit, Faithful Guide." "On a Saturday afternoon, October 1858, while at work in my cornfield, the sentiment of the hymn came to me," writes Wells. "The next day, Sunday, being a very stormy day, I finished the hymn and wrote the tune for it and sent it to Prof. I. B. Woodbury." Isaac Woodbury was the editor of the New York Musical Pioneer, and the original text and tune were first published in that periodical's November 1858 issue. Bert Polman ================= Wells, Marcus M. Concerning this author and his hymn we have no information beyond the following facts:— Holy Spirit, faithful Guide. [Whitsuntide.] Appeared in The Sacred Lute, by T. E. Perkins, N.Y., undated [1864], p. 373, with music. Both words and music are attributed therein to M. M. Wells. The hymn has since been repeated in several English and American collections, including I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, 1878. It is dated 1858. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, New Supplement (1907)
