Lord, Thou Hast Been Our Dwelling-Place

Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 15 hymnals Topics: Old Year Lyrics: 1 Lord, Thou hast been our dwelling-place Through all the ages of our race; Before the mountains had their birth, Or even Thou hadst formed the earth, From everlasting Thou art God, To everlasting our abode. 2 At Thy command man fades and dies And newborn generations rise; A thousand years are passed away, And all to Thee are but a day; Yea, like the watches of the night, With Thee the ages wing their flight. 3 Man soon yields up his fleeting breath Before this swelling tide of death; Like transient sleep his seasons pass, His life is like the tender grass, Luxuriant 'neath the morning sun, And withered ere the day is done. 4 Man in Thy anger is consumed, And unto grief and sorrow doomed; Before Thy clear and searching sight Our secret sins are brought to light; Beneath Thy wrath we pine and die, Our life expiring like a sigh. 5 For threescore years and ten we wait, Or fourscore years if strength be great; But grief and toil attend life's day, And soon our spirits fly away; O who with true and reverent though Can fear Thy anger as he ought? 6 O teach Thou us to count our days And set our hearts on wisdom's ways; Turn, Lord, to us in our distress, In pity now Thy servants bless; Let mercy's dawn dispel our night, And all our day with joy be bright. Scripture: Psalm 90 Used With Tune: ST. CATHERINE

Jesu, still lead on

Author: Jane L. Borthwick; N. L. von Zinzendorf Meter: 5.5.8.8.5.5 Appears in 291 hymnals Topics: The Old Year Lyrics: 1 Jesu, still lead on, Till our rest be won; And, although the way be cheerless, We will follow, calm and fearless; Guide us by Thy hand To our Fatherland. 2 If the way be drear, If the foe be near, Let not faithless fears o'ertake us; Let not faith and hope forsake us, For through many a woe To our home we go. 3 When we seek relief From a long-felt grief; When temptations come alluring, Make us patient and enduring; Show us that bright shore Where we weep no more. 4 Jesu, still lead on, Till our rest be won: Heavenly Leader, still direct us, Still support, console, protect us, Till we safely stand In our Fatherland. Used With Tune: [Jesu, still lead on]

Across the sky the shades of night

Author: J. Hamilton Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 29 hymnals Topics: The Old Year; Old Year Lyrics: 1 Across the sky the shades of night This Winter's eve are fleeting: We deck Thine altar, Lord, with light, In solemn worship meeting: And as the year's last hours go by, We lift to Thee our earnest cry. Once more Thy love entreating. 2 Before the cross, subdued we bow, To Thee our prayers addressing; Recounting all Thy mercies now, And all our sins confessing; Beseeching Thee, this coming year, To hold us in Thy faith and fear, And crown us with Thy blessing. 3 And, while we kneel, we lift our eyes To dear ones gone before us, Safe housed with Thee in Paradise, Whose peace descendeth o'er us: And beg of Thee, when life is past, To re-unite us all, at last, And to our loss restore us. 4 We gather up, in this brief hour, The memory of Thy mercies: Thy wondrous goodness, love, and power, Our grateful song rehearses: For Thou hast been our strength and stay, In many a dark and dreary day Of sorrow and reverses. 5 In many an hour, when fear and dread, Like evil spells hath bound us, And clouds were gathering overhead, Thy providence hath found us: In many a night when waves run high, Thy gracious presence drawing nigh Hath made all calm around us. 6 Then, O Great God, in years to come, Whatever fate betide us, Right onward through our journey home Be Thou at hand to guide us: Nor leave us till, at close of life, Safe from all perils, toil, and strife, Heaven shall unfold and hide us. Amen. Used With Tune: ATTOLLE PAULUM

O God, Our Help in Ages Past

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674-1719 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,268 hymnals Topics: God's Faithfulness; God's Providence; God As Refuge/Safety/Shelter; Occasional Services Anniversary; Occasional Services New Year; Old Age; Perseverance; Time Lyrics: 1 O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home: 2 Under the shadow of your throne your saints have dwelt secure; sufficient is your arm alone, and our defense is sure. 3 Before the hills in order stood or earth received its frame, from everlasting you are God, to endless years the same. 4 A thousand ages in your sight are like an evening gone, short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun. 5 Time, like an ever rolling stream, soon bears us all away; we fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day. 6 O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, still be our guard while troubles last, and our eternal home! Scripture: Psalm 90 Used With Tune: ST. ANNE
