Author: Walter Chalmers Smith (1824-1908) Meter: 11.11.11.11 Appears in 216 hymnals Topics: Other Saints and Festivals The Conversion of Paul Lyrics: 1 Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise. 2 Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy justice like mountains high soaring above thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. 3 To all life thou givest, to both great and small; in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, and wither and perish; but naught changeth thee. 4 Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; all laud we would render: O help us to see 'tis only the splendour of light hideth thee. Scripture: Isaiah 40:6-8 Used With Tune: ST DENIO

Rejoice in God's saints, today and all days!

Author: Fred Pratt Green (1903-2000) Meter: 10.10.11.11 Appears in 19 hymnals Topics: Other Saints and Festivals Philip and James, Apostles Lyrics: 1 Rejoice in God's saints, today and all days! A world without saints forgets how to praise. Their faith in acquiring the habit of prayer, their depth of adoring, Lord, help us to share. 2 Some march with events to turn them God's way; some need to withdraw, the better to pray; some carry the gospel through fire and through flood: our world is their parish: their purpose is God. 3 Rejoice in those saints, unpraised and unknown, who bear someone's cross, or shoulder their own: they shame our complaining, our comforts, our cares: what patience in caring, what courage, is theirs! 4 Rejoice in God's saints, today and all days! A world without saints forgets how to praise. In loving, in living, they prove it is true: the way of self-giving, Lord, leads us to you. Scripture: Hebrews 11 Used With Tune: HANNOVER

Jesus calls us: o'er the tumult

Author: Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895) Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 955 hymnals Topics: Other Saints and Festivals Andrew the Apostle Lyrics: 1 Jesus calls us: o'er the tumult of our life's wild restless sea, day by day his sweet voice soundeth, saying, 'Christian, follow me': 2 As of old Saint Andrew heard it by the Galilean lake, turned from home and toil and kindred leaving all for his dear sake. 3 Jesus calls us from the worship of the vain world's golden store, from each idol that would keep us, saying, 'Christian, love me more.' 4 In our joys and in our sorrows, days of toil and hours of ease, still he calls, in cares and pleasures, that we love him more than these. 5 Jesus calls us: by thy mercies, Saviour, make us hear thy call, give our hearts to thine obedience, serve and love thee best of all. Scripture: John 1:35-42 Used With Tune: ST ANDREW

Scripture: Psalm 119:105 Used With Tune: RAVENSHAW

Ye that know the Lord is gracious

Author: Cyril Argentine Alington (1872-1955) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 17 hymnals Topics: Other Saints and Festivals Simon and Jude, Apostles Lyrics: 1 Ye that know the Lord is gracious, ye for whom a corner-stone stands, of God elect and precious, laid that ye may build thereon, see that on that sure foundation ye a living temple raise, towers that may tell forth salvation, walls that may re-echo praise. 2 Living stones, by God appointed each to his allotted place, kings and priests, by God anointed, shall ye not declare his grace? Ye, a royal generation, tell the tidings of your birth, tidings of a new creation to an old and weary earth. 3 Tell the praise of him who called you out of darkness into light, broke the fetters that enthralled you, gave you freedom, peace and sight: tell the tale of sins forgiven, strength renewed and hope restored, till the earth, in tune with heaven, praise and magnify the Lord. Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:17 Used With Tune: HYFRYDOL

I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship

Author: William Young Fullerton (1857-1932) Appears in 34 hymnals Topics: Other Saints and Festivals St Stephen; Other Saints and Festivals Joseph of Nazareth Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship, should set his love upon the sons of men, or why, as Shepherd, he should seek the wanderers, to bring them back, they know not how or when. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted and stays our sin and calms our lurking fear and lifts the burden from the heavy laden; for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when at his bidding every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when every heart with love and joy is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n, and heav'n to earth, will answer, 'at last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' Scripture: Luke 2 Used With Tune: LONDONDERRY AIR
