Ah! 'tis the old, old Story

Author: Mrs. C. L. Shacklock Hymnal: On Joyful Wing #150 (1886) First Line: Ah! ‘tis the old, old story Refrain First Line: Ah! ‘tis the old, old story Lyrics: 1 Ah! ‘tis the old, old story, Tempted and led astray, Leaving the path of duty, Choosing the evil way. Breaking the hearts of mothers, Slighting their fervent prayers, Showing the seed which bringeth Only a wealth of tears. Ah! ‘tis the old, old story, Ah! ‘tis the old, old story, Ah! ‘tis the old, old story, Tempted and led astray. 2 Robbing the heart of lightness, Losing the bloom of youth, Dimming the eyes’ glad brightness, Stilling the voice of truth. Missing the pride of manhood, Missing a noble aim, Gaining a ship-wrecked nature, Gaining a sullied name. Ah! ‘tis the old, old story, Ah! ‘tis the old, old story, Ah! ‘tis the old, old story, Tempted and led astray. 3 But, in an old, old story, Full of a grace divine, There is abundant pardon, Even for sin like thine, Now, with a contrite spirit, Turn from the ways of sin, Knock at the gate of heaven, Entrance thy soul shall win. Yes, ‘tis the old, old story, Yes, ‘tis the old, old story, Yes, ‘tis the old, old story, Full of a grace divine. Tune Title: [Ah! ‘tis the old, old story]

William J. Kirkpatrick

1838 - 1921 Person Name: Wm. J. Kirkpatrick Composer of "[Ah! ‘tis the old, old story]" in On Joyful Wing William J. Kirkpatrick (b. Duncannon, PA, 1838; d. Philadelphia, PA, 1921) received his musical training from his father and several other private teachers. A carpenter by trade, he engaged in the furniture business from 1862 to 1878. He left that profession to dedicate his life to music, serving as music director at Grace Methodist Church in Philadelphia. Kirkpatrick compiled some one hundred gospel song collections; his first, Devotional Melodies (1859), was published when he was only twenty-one years old. Many of these collections were first published by the John Hood Company and later by Kirkpatrick's own Praise Publishing Company, both in Philadelphia. Bert Polman
