One There Is, Above All Others

Author: John Newton Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7 Appears in 689 hymnals Lyrics: 1. One there is, above all others, Well deserves the name of friend; His is love beyond a brother’s, Costly, free, and knows no end: They who once His kindness prove, Find it everlasting love! 2. Which of all our friends to save us, Could or would have shed their blood? But our Jesus died to have us Reconciled, in Him to God: This was boundless love indeed! Jesus is a friend in need. 3. Men, when raised to lofty stations, Often know their friends no more; Slight and scorn their poor relations Though they valued them before. But our Savior always owns Those whom He redeemed with groans. 4. When He lived on earth abasèd, Friend of sinners was His name; Now, above all glory raisèd, He rejoices in the same: Still He calls them brethren, friends, And to all their wants attends. 5. Could we bear from one another, What He daily bears from us? Yet this glorious friend and brother, Loves us though we treat Him thus: Though for good we render ill, He accounts us brethren still. 6. O for grace our hearts to soften! Teach us, Lord, at length to love; We, alas! forget too often, What a friend we have above: But when home our souls are brought, We will love Thee as we ought. Who are these like stars appearing

Author: Frances E. Cox; Heinrich Theobald Schenk Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7 Appears in 149 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Who are these like stars appearing, These, before God's throne who stand? Each a golden crown is wearing; Who are all this glorious band? Alleluia! hark, they sing, Praising loud their heavenly King. 2 These are they who have contended For their Saviour's honor long, Wrestling on till life was ended, Following not the sinful throng; These, who well the fight sustained, Triumph through the Lamb have gained. 3 These are they whose hearts were riven, Sore with woe and anguish tried, Who in prayer full oft have striven With the God they glorified; Now, their painful conflict o'er, God has bid them weep no more. 4 These, as priests, have watched and waited, Offering up to Christ their will, Soul and body consecrated, Day and night to serve him still: Now, in God's most holy place, Blest they stand before His face. Amen. Topics: The Church The Church Triumphant Used With Tune: ALL SAINTS

Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder

Author: John Newton Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7 Appears in 57 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Let us love and sing and wonder, let us praise the Savior's name! He has hushed the law's loud thunder, he has quenched Mount Sinai's flame: he has washed us with his blood, he has brought us nigh to God. 2 Let us love the Lord who bought us, pitied us when enemies, called us by his grace and taught us, gave us ears and gave us eyes: he has washed us with his blood, he presents our souls to God. 3 Let us sing, though fierce temptation threaten hard to bear us down! For the Lord, our strong salvation, holds in view the conqu'ror's crown: he who washed us with his blood soon will bring us home to God. 4 Let us wonder; grace and justice join and point to mercy's store; when thro' grace in Christ our trust is, justice smiles and asks no more: he who washed us with his blood has secured our way to God. 5 Let us praise, and join the chorus of the saints enthroned on high; here they trusted him before us, now their praises fill the sky: "You have washed us with your blood; you are worthy, Lamb of God!"
