John J. Overholt
1918 - 2000 Translator of "Who Christ Will Follow" in The Christian Hymnary. Bks. 1-4 John J. Overholt was born to an Amish family of limited means in the state of Ohio in 1918. As a child he was soon introduced to his father's personal collection of gospel songs and hymns, which was to have a marked influence on his later life. With his twin brother Joe, he early was exposed to the Amish-Mennonite tradition hymn-singing and praising worship.
An early career in Christian service led to a two-year period of relief work in the country of Poland following World War II. During that interim he began to gather many European songs and hymns as a personal hobby, not realizing that these selections would become invaluable to The Christian Hymnary which was begun in 1960 and completed twelve years later in 1972, with a compilation of 1000 songs, hymns and chorales. (The largest Menn. hymnal).
A second hymnal was begun simultaneously in the German language entitled Erweckungs Lieder Nr.1 which was brought to completion in 1986. This hymnal has a total of 200 selections with a small addendum of English hymns.
Mr. Overholt married in 1965 to an accomplished soprano Vera Marie Sommers, who was not to be outdone by her husband's creativity and compiled a hymnal of 156 selections entitled Be Glad and Sing, directed to children and youth and first printed in 1986.
During this later career of hymn publishing, Mr. Overholt also found time for Gospel team work throughout Europe. At this writing he is preparing for a 5th consecutive tour which he arranges and guides. The countries visited will be Belgium, Switzerland, France, Germany, Poland, USSR and Romania.
Mr. Overholt was called to the Christian ministry in 1957 and resides at Sarasota, Florida where he is co-minister of a Beachy Amish-Mennonite Church.
Five children were born to this family and all enjoy worship in song.

Henry Twells
1823 - 1900 Person Name: Henry Twells (1832- ) Author of "At even ere the sun was set" in Hymns of the Ages Twells, Henry, M.A., was born in 1823, and educated at St. Peter's College, Cambridge. B.A. 1848, M.A. 1851. Taking Holy Orders in 1849, he was successively Curate of Great Berkhamsted, 1849-51; Sub-Vicar of Stratford-on-Avon, 1851-54; Master of St. Andrew's House School, Mells, Somerset, 1854-56; and Head Master of Godolphin School, Hammersmith, 1856-70. In 1870 he was preferred to the Rectory of Baldock, Herts, and in 1871 to that of Waltham-on-the Wolds. He was Select Preacher at Cambridge in 1873-74, and became an Honorary Canon of Peterborough Cathedral in 1884. Canon Twells is best known by his beautiful evening hymn, "At even ere the sun was set." He also contributed the following hymns to the 1889 Supplemental Hymns to Hymns Ancient & Modern:—
1. Glorious is Thy Name, O Lord. The Name of God.
2. Know ye the Lord hath borne away? Ascension.
3. Not for our sins alone. Plea for Divine Mercy.
4. The voice of God's Creation found me. The Word of God a Light.

Twells, H., p. 1189, i. Canon Twells was born on March 13, 1823, at Ashted, Birmingham, and died at Bournemouth, Jan. 19, 1900. His Memoir, by W. Clavell Ingram, D.D., was published in 1901. His Hymns and other Stray Verses, appeared in 1901i. From it the following additional hymns have come into common use:—
1. Spirit of Truth and Might, 'Tis Thou alone can teach. [Our Words.] On "The Responsibility of Speech," p. 26. In the Sunday School Hymnary, 1905.
2. The day of Pentecost is fully come. [Whitsuntide.] Usually the second stanza is taken as the opening of this hymn. In this form it is given as "Awake, 0 Lord, as in the days of old," in Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1904, the Sunday School Hymnary, 1905, and other collections.
