Father, hear the prayer we offer!

Author: Anon. Appears in 242 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Father, hear the prayer we offer! Not for ease that prayer shall be, But for strength that we may ever Live our lives courageously. 2 Not forever by still waters Would we idly, quiet stay, But would smit the living fountains From the rocks along our way. 3 Be our strength in hours of weakness, In our wanderings, be our guide; Through endeavor, hardship, danger, Father, be thou at our side! 4 Ours to sow the seed in sorrow, Thine to bid it spring and grow; And the golden days of autumn Will a precious harvest show. Lord of glory! thou hast bought us

Author: Mrs. Alderson Appears in 65 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Lord of glory! thou hast bought us, With thy life-blood as the price, Never grudging, for the lost ones, That tremendous sacrifice; And, with that, hast freely given Blessings, countless as the sand, To the thoughtless and the evil, With thine own unsparing hand. 2 Grant us hearts, dear Lord, to yield thee Gladly, freely, of thine own; With the sunshine of thy goodness, Melt our thankless hearts of stone, Till our cold and selfish natures, Warmed by thee, at length believe That more happy and more blessed 'Tis to give than to receive. 3 Wondrous honor hast thou given To our humblest charity, In thine own mysterious sentence, "Ye have done it unto me!" Give us faith to trust thee boldly, Hope, to stay our souls on thee; But, O, best of all thy graces Give us thine own charity. Topics: The Church Ministry and Missions Used With Tune: MESSAGE

Onward speed thy conquering flight

Author: Anon. Appears in 53 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Onward speed thy conquering flight, Angel, onward speed; Shed abroad thy radiant light, Bid the shades recede; Tread the idols in the dust, Heathen fanes destroy, Spread the gospel's holy trust, Spread the gospel's joy. 2 Onward speed thy conquering flight, Angel, onward haste; Quickly on each mountain's hight Be thy standard placed; Let thy blissful tidings float Far o'er vales and hills, Till the sweetly-echoing note Every bosom thrills. 3 Onward speed thy conquering flight, Angel, onward fly; Long has been the reign of night; Bring the morning nigh; 'Tis to thee the heathen lift Their imploring wail; Bear them Heaven's holy gift, Ere their courage fail. F. E. Belden

1858 - 1945 Composer of "MESSAGE" in The Seventh-Day Adventist Hymn and Tune Book Belden was born in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1858. He began writing music in his late teenage years after moving to California with his family. For health reasons he later moved to Colorado. He returned to Battle Creek with his wife in the early 1880s, and there he became involved in Adventist Church publishing. F. E. Belden wrote many hymn tunes, gospel songs, and related texts in the early years of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Belden was able to rapidly write both music and poetry together which enabled him to write a song to fit a sermon while it was still being delivered. He also wrote songs for evangelist Billy Sunday. Though Belden’s later years were marred by misunderstandings with the church leadership over his royalties, he did donate his papers and manuscripts to the church’s seminary at his death. He died on December 2, 1945 in Battle Creek, Michigan. N.N., Hymnary. Source: http://www.hymntime.com/tch/bio/b/e/l/belden_fe.htm

Anonymous

Person Name: Anon. Author of "Father, hear the prayer we offer!" in The Seventh-Day Adventist Hymn and Tune Book In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Eliza S. Alderson

1818 - 1889 Person Name: Mrs. Alderson Author of "Lord of glory! thou hast bought us" in The Seventh-Day Adventist Hymn and Tune Book Alderson, Eliza Sibbald, née Dykes, granddaughter of the Rev. Thomas Dykes, of Hull, and sister of the Rev. Dr. Dykes, born in 1818, and married, in 1850, to the Rev. W. T. Alderson, some time chaplain to the West Riding House of Correction, Wakefield. Mrs. Alderson is the author of the following hymns, the first of which is likely to attain a commanding position:— 1. And now, beloved Lord, Thy soul resigning. [Passiontide.] A hymn of more than usual merit, in 6 stanzas of 4 lines, written in 1868 at the request of Dr. Dykes. In 1875, stanzas i., ii., v. and vi., were given in the revised edition of Hymns Ancient & Modern, No. 121, with a special tune Commendation by Dr. Dykes. The full original text is restored in Thring's Collection, 1882, No. 170. 2. Lord of glory, Who hast bought us. [Almsgiving.] Written in 1864, in 5 stanzas of 8 lines, and published in the Appendix to Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1868, No. 372, and repeated in the revised edition 1875, No. 367, Mrs. Alderson says, "It was the very strong feeling that a tithe of our income was a solemn debt to God and His poor, which inspired it." Dr. Dykes’s tune "Charitas" was composed for this hymn. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907) ===================== Alderson, Eliza S., p. 38, i. She was born Aug. 16, 1818, and died at Kirkthorpe, Yorkshire, Mar. 18, 1889. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, New Supplement (1907)
