Strew the way with palm leaves

Hymnal: International Song Service #113 (1895) First Line: He whose smile reflecting light Lyrics: Chorus: Strew the way with palm leaves, To the holy city; Children in the temple, Make the arches ring; Strew the way with palm leaves, Shout aloud Hosanna, Bow the knee before Him, Salem's mighty King. 1 He whose smile reflecting light, Turn'd to wine the water bright; He who on the stormy deep Hush'd the rolling waves to sleep; Cleans'd the leper by a word, Heal'd the sick, the deaf restored; He who bless'd the loaves, and fed Hungry souls with living bread. [Chorus] 2 He who touch'd the sable bier, Dried the childless widow's tear; He who then but gently spoke, And her son to life awoke; Why rebuke the joyous song, Bursting from a grateful throng? Cease to chide the gath'ring crowd, Or the stones will cry aloud. [Chorus] Languages: English Tune Title: SALEM'S MIGHTY KING

Philip Phillips

1834 - 1895 Composer of "[Strew the way with palm leaves]" in International Song Service Phillips, Philip, commonly known as the "Singing Pilgrim," was born in Chautauqua County, N. York, Aug. 13, 1834. Although engaged in farming for a time, from an early age he devoted himself to music, and ultimately devoted himself to the work of a "Singing Evangelist," in which capacity he has visited most English-speaking countries. His popular hymnals are: (1) Early Blossoms, 1860; (2) Musical Leaves, 1862; and (3) The Singing Pilgrim, 1866. In these works he published one or two hymns, including "I have heard of a Saviour's love" (The love of Christ), as in I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, 1878. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907)
