Pounds Meter: 10.8.10.8 with refrain Appears in 80 hymnals Hymnal Title: Timeless Truths First Line: There are days so dark that I seek in vain Refrain First Line: Oh, the touch of His hand on mine Lyrics: 1 There are days so dark that I seek in vain For the face of my Friend divine; But though darkness hide, He is there to guide By the touch of His hand on mine. Refrain: Oh, the touch of His hand on mine, Oh, the touch of His hand on mine! There is grace and pow’r, in the trying hour, In the touch of His hand on mine. 2 There are times, when tired of the toilsome road, That for ways of the world I pine; But He draws me back to the upward track By the touch of His hand on mine. [Refrain] 3 When the way is dim, and I cannot see Through the mist of His wise design, How my glad heart yearns and my faith returns By the touch of His hand on mine. [Refrain] 4 In the last sad hour, as I stand alone Where the powers of death combine, While the dark waves roll He will guide my soul By the touch of His hand on mine. [Refrain] Scripture: Acts 9:41 Used With Tune: [There are days so dark that I seek in vain] Text Sources: Timeless Truths (http://library.timelesstruths.org/music/The_Touch_of_His_Hand_on_Mine); Anonymous/Unknown, The Blue Book (178)

Jessie Brown Pounds

1861 - 1921 Person Name: Jessie B. Pounds Hymnal Title: Timeless Truths Author of "The Touch of His Hand on Mine" in Timeless Truths Jessie Brown Pounds was born in Hiram, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland on 31 August 1861. She was not in good health when she was a child so she was taught at home. She began to write verses for the Cleveland newspapers and religious weeklies when she was fifteen. After an editor of a collection of her verses noted that some of them would be well suited for church or Sunday School hymns, J. H. Fillmore wrote to her asking her to write some hymns for a book he was publishing. She then regularly wrote hymns for Fillmore Brothers. She worked as an editor with Standard Publishing Company in Cincinnati from 1885 to 1896, when she married Rev. John E. Pounds, who at that time was a pastor of the Central Christian Church in Indianapolis. A memorable phrase would come to her, she would write it down in her notebook. Maybe a couple months later she would write out the entire hymn. She is the author of nine books, about fifty librettos for cantatas and operettas and of nearly four hundred hymns. Her hymn "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" was sung at President McKinley's funeral. Dianne Shapiro, from "The Singers and Their Songs: sketches of living gospel hymn writers" by Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (Chicago: The Rodeheaver Company, 1916)
