Gilbert E. Doan

1930 - 2024 Person Name: Gilbert E. Doan, 1930- Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:16 Author (vs. 4) of "Come, Let Us Eat" in Worship and Rejoice Born: September 14, 1930, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Doan was educated at Harvard University (BA 1942); Lutheran Theological Seminary (BD 1955); the University of Pennsylvania (MA 1962, though he returned it to the school to protest their policies); and Wagner College (DD, late 1970s). He served as a campus pastor in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1955-61); Northeastern Director of the National Lutheran Campus Ministry; and pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Communion, Philadelphia (1984-95). Delores Dufner

b. 1939 Person Name: Delores Dufner, OSB Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 Author (stanzas 1–3) of "Let the Hungry Come to Me" in Voices Together Delores Dufner is a member of St. Benedict’s Monastery in St. Joseph, Minnesota, with Master's Degrees in Liturgical Music and Liturgical Studies. She is currently a member and a Fellow of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, the National Pastoral Musicians (NPM), the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), and the Monastic Worship Forum. Delores is a writer of liturgical, scripturally based hymn and song texts which have a broad ecumenical appeal and are contracted or licensed by 34 publishers in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and China. She has received more than 50 commissions to write texts for special occasions or needs and has published over 200 hymns, many of which have several different musical settings and appear in several publications. She is the author of three hymn collections: Sing a New Church (1994, Oregon Catholic Press), The Glimmer of Glory in Song (2004, GIA Publications), and And Every Breath, a Song (2011, GIA Publications). Delores, the middle child of five, was born and raised on a farm in the Red River Valley of North Dakota. She attended a one-room country school in which she learned to read music and play the tonette, later studying piano and organ. Delores was a school music teacher, private piano and organ instructor, and parish organist/choir director for twelve years. She served as liturgy coordinator for her religious community of 775 members for six years and as Director of the Office of Worship for the Diocese of St. Cloud, Minnesota for fifteen years. She subsequently worked as a liturgical music consultant for the Diocese of Ballarat, Victoria in southeast Australia for fifteen months. Carol Ann Doran

1936 - 2023 Person Name: Carol Doran (1936-) Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 Composer of "BAPTISM" in Common Praise (1998) Carol Doran was a musician, author, scholar, loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was also a woman of unwavering faith, integrity, kindness, curiosity, beauty, good humor, and fearlessness who inspired those she loved and who loved her so much in return. Carol’s early exposure to the study of music became a lifelong passion and professional dedication as she went on to earn a Doctor of Music Arts degree in Church Music and Organ at The Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. Dr. Doran taught and was a professor of Music and Liturgy at Colgate Rochester Divinity School/Bexley Hall in Rochester, New York; Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia; the School of Theology at Boston University; Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA, and many others. Additionally, she served with distinction on the boards of many professional organizations of musicians and liturgists. Carol published numerous articles on church music and worship and collaborated with the Rev. Dr. Thomas H. Troeger in the publication of four books, including two hymnals published by Oxford University Press. Carol and Michael Doran were married for more than 59 years, the majority of which were spent in Rochester, NY where they raised their four children: Charles, Julia, Ellen, and Elizabeth. Carol cared deeply about her family, and she extended that joyful compassion to friends, associates, and every person that she encountered in her life. Carol celebrated the lives that her children and their families were living and showed her love in a million different ways throughout her life. When she saw you, whether to say hello or goodbye, she proclaimed her love with a warm, lingering handshake or hug; her loving kindness in her eyes and in the smile you could trust and take as the gift she gave you. Above all, she was devoted to her husband, Michael, and he to her. Carol is survived by her loving husband, Michael of North Andover, MA; sister Ellen Buerklin of Chester, PA; brother Norman (& Patty) Maynard, MA; son Charles (& Cara) Ipswich, MA.; daughters Julia Chambers (& Eddy) Escondido, CA; Ellen Bzomowski (& Steve) Plainfield, MA; Elizabeth Evenson (& Paul) Arlington, MA; and nine grandchildren: Zoe, Lucas, Alexander, Ava, Kyle, Theo, Valerie, Kira, and Elias. We love you and we will miss you always. Funeral service will be offered on Thursday November 9,2023 at 11:00 a.m. in The Parish of Christ Church, 35 Central Street, Andover, MA. Timothy Dudley-Smith

b. 1926 Person Name: Timothy Dudley-Smith, 1926- Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:24 Author of "Not for Tongues of Heaven's Angels" in Worship and Rejoice Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Educated at Pembroke College and Ridley Hall, Cambridge, Dudley-Smith has served the Church of England since his ordination in 1950. He has occupied a number of church positions, including parish priest in the diocese of Southwark (1953-1962), archdeacon of Norwich (1973-1981), and bishop of Thetford, Norfolk, from 1981 until his retirement in 1992. He also edited a Christian magazine, Crusade, which was founded after Billy Graham's 1955 London crusade. Dudley-Smith began writing comic verse while a student at Cambridge; he did not begin to write hymns until the 1960s. Many of his several hundred hymn texts have been collected in Lift Every Heart: Collected Hymns 1961-1983 (1984), Songs of Deliverance: Thirty-six New Hymns (1988), and A Voice of Singing (1993). The writer of Christian Literature and the Church (1963), Someone Who Beckons (1978), and Praying with the English Hymn Writers (1989), Dudley-Smith has also served on various editorial committees, including the committee that published Psalm Praise (1973).
