Before the throne of God above

Author: Charitie De Chenez, 1841-1923 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 58 hymnals Scripture: Jeremiah 23:6 Lyrics: 1 Before the throne of God above I have a strong, a perfect plea: a great High Priest, whose name is Love, who ever lives and pleads for me. 2 My name is graven on his hands, my name is written on his heart; I know that while in heaven he stands no tongue can bid me thence depart. 3 When Satan tempts me to despair, and tells me of the guilt within, upward I look, and see him there who made an end of all my sin. 4 Because the sinless Saviour died, my sinful soul is counted free; for God, the just, is satisfied to look on him and pardon me. 5 Behold him there! the risen Lamb! My perfect, spotless righteousness, the great unchangeable I AM, the King of glory and of grace! 6 One with himself, I cannot die: my soul is purchased by his blood; my life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ, my Saviour and my God. Behold, a Branch Is Growing

Author: Harriet R. K. Spaeth, 1845-1925; John C. Mattes, 1876-1948 Meter: 7.6.7.6.6.7.6 Appears in 14 hymnals Scripture: Jeremiah 23:5-6 Lyrics: 1 Behold, a branch is growing of loveliest form and grace! As prophets sang, foreknowing, it springs from Jesse's race and now begins to flow'r in midst of coldest winter, at deepest midnight hour. 2 Isaiah had foretold it in words of promise sure, and Mary's arms enfold it, a virgin meek and pure. Through God's eternal will this child to her is given at midnight calm and still. 3 This flow'r, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air, dispels with glorious splendor the darkness ev'rywhere. True man, and yet true God, from sin and death he saves us and lightens ev'ry load. 4 0 Savior, child of Mary, who felt our human woes, O Savior, King of glory, who conquered all our foes, bring us at last, we pray, to the bright courts of heaven and to the endless day.
