Psalm 143: Oh, hear my prayer, Lord

Meter: 6.6.6.6 Appears in 7 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 143 First Line: Oh, hear my prayer, Lord Lyrics: 1Oh, hear my prayer, Lord, And unto my desire To bow thine ear accord, I humbly thee require; And, in thy faithfulness, Unto me answer make, And, in thy righteousness, Upon me pity take. 2In judgment enter not With me thy servant poor; For why, this well I wot, No sinner can endure The sight of thee, O God: If thou his deeds shalt try, He dare make none abode Himself to justify. 3Behold, the cruel foe Me persecutes with spite, My soul to overthrow: Yea, he my life down quite Unto the ground hath smote, And made me dwell full low In darkness, as forgot, Or men dead long ago. 4Therefore my sp’rit much vex’d, O’erwhelm’d is me within; My heart right sore perplex’d And desolate hath been. 5Yet I do call to mind What ancient days record, Thy works of ev’ry kind I think upon, O Lord. 6Lo, I do stretch my hands To thee, my help alone; For thou well understands All my complaint and moan: My thirsting soul desires, And longeth after thee, As thirsty ground requires With rain refresh’d to be. 7Lord, let my pray’r prevail, To answer it make speed; For, lo, my sp’rit doth fail: Hide not thy face in need; Lest I be like to those That do in darkness sit, Or him that downward goes Into the dreadful pit. 8Because I trust in thee, O Lord, cause me to hear Thy loving-kindness free, When morning doth appear: Cause me to know the way Wherein my path should be; For why, my soul on high I do lift up to thee. 9From my fierce enemy In safety do me guide, Because I flee to thee, Lord, that thou may’st me hide. 10My God alone art thou, Teach me thy righteousness: Thy Sp’rit’s good, lead me to The land of uprightness. 11O Lord, for thy name’s sake, Be pleas’d to quicken me; And, for thy truth, forth take My soul from misery. 12And of thy grace destroy My foes, and put to shame All who my soul annoy; For I thy servant am.

Psalm 143 - I

Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 143 First Line: Lord, hear my pray'r, attend my suits Lyrics: 1 Lord, hear my prayer, attend my suits; and in thy faithfulness Give thou an answer unto me, and in thy righteousness. 2 Thy servant also bring thou not in judgment to be tried: Because no living man can be in thy sight justified. 3 For th' en'my hath pursued my soul, my life to ground down tread: In darkness he hath made me dwell, as who have long been dead. 4 My sp'rit is therefore overwhelmed in me perplexedly; Within me is my very heart amazèd wondrously. 5 I call to mind the days of old, to meditate I use On all thy works; upon the deeds I of thy hands do muse. 6 My hands to thee I stretch; my soul thirsts, as dry land, for thee. 7 Haste, Lord, to hear, my spirit fails: hide not thy face from me; Lest like to them I do become that go down to the dust. 8 At morn let me thy kindness hear; for in thee do I trust. Teach me the way that I should walk: I lift my soul to thee. 9 Lord, free me from my foes; I flee to thee to cover me. 10 Because thou art my God, to do thy will do me instruct: Thy Sp'rit is good, me to the land of uprightness conduct. 11 Revive and quicken me, O Lord, ev'n for thine own name's sake; And do thou, for thy righteousness, my soul from trouble take. 12 And of thy mercy slay my foes; let all destroyèd be That do afflict my soul: for I a servant am to thee.

Psalm 143

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 56 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 143 First Line: My righteous Judge, my gracious God Lyrics: My righteous Judge, my gracious God, Hear when I spread my hands abroad, And cry for succor from thy throne; O make thy truth and mercy known! Let judgment not against me pass; Behold, thy servant pleads thy grace: Should justice call us to thy bar, No man alive is guiltless there. Look down in pity, Lord, and see The mighty woes that burden me; Down to the dust my life is brought, Like one long buried and forgot. I dwell in darkness and unseen, My heart is desolate within My thoughts in musing silence trace The ancient wonders of thy grace. Thence I derive a glimpse of hope To bear my sinking spirits up; I stretch my hands to God again, And thirst like parched lands for rain For thee I thirst, I pray, I mourn: When will thy smiling face return? Shall all my joys on earth remove? And God for ever hide his love? My God, thy long delay to save Will sink thy pris'ner to the grave; My heart grows faint, and dim mine eye; Make haste to help before I die. The night is witness to my tears, Distressing pains, distressing fears; O might I hear thy morning voice, How would my wearied powers rejoice! In thee I trust, to thee I sigh, And lift my heavy soul on high; For thee sit waiting all the day, And wear the tiresome hours away. Break off my fetters, Lord, and show Which is the path my feet should go; If snares and foes beset the road, I flee to hide me near my God. Teach me to do thy holy will, And lead me to thy heav'nly hill; Let the good Spirit of thy love Conduct me to thy courts above. Then shall my soul no more complain, The tempter then shall rage in vain; And flesh, that was my foe before, Shall never vex my spirit more. Psalm CXLIII

Appears in 6 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 143 First Line: Hear, O my God, with pity hear Lyrics: I. Hear, O my God, with pity hear My humble supplicating moan; In mercy answer all my pray'r, And make thy truth and goodness known. II. And O let mercy still be nigh; Should awful justice frown severe, Before the terrors of thy eye, What trembling mortal can appear? III. My persecuting foes prevail, Almost I yield my struggling breath; The chearful rays of comfort fail, And sink me to the shades of death. IV. While thus oppressive sorrows flow, Unintermitting o'er my head; My inmost pow'rs are whelm'd in woe, And all my hopes and joys are fled. V. I call to mind the former days; Thy ancient works declare thy name, Thy truth, thy goodness, and thy grace; And these, O Lord, are still the same. VI. To thee, I stretch my suppliant hands, To thee my longing soul aspires; As chearing show'rs to thirsty lands, Come, Lord, and fill these strong desires. VII. Come, Lord, on wings of mercy fly, My spirit fails at thy delay; Hide not thy face; I faint, I die, Without thy blissful healing ray. VIII. Speak to my heart; the gloomy night Shall vanish, and sweet morning break; In thee I trust, my guide, my light; Teach me the way my feet should take. IX. My soul's desires ascend to thee, O save me from my num'rous foes; To thy kind-guardian wing I flee, For safe defence and sweet repose. X. Teach me to do thy sacred will; Thou art my God, my hope, my stay; Let thy good spirit lead me still, And point the safe, the upright way. XI. Thy name, thy righteousness I plead, O Lord, revive my drooping heart; Let these distressing fears recede, And bid my troubles all depart. XII. Those unrelenting foes destroy, Which thus against my peace combine; Then shall thy service be my joy, And all my active pow'rs be thine.
