Through every age, eternal God

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 160 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90 Lyrics: Through every age, eternal God, Thou art our rest, our safe abode; High was thy throne ere heav'n was made, Or earth thy humble footstool laid. Long hadst thou reigned ere time began, Or dust was fashioned to a man; And long thy kingdom shall endure When earth and time shall be no more. But man, weak man, is born to die, Made up of guilt and vanity; Thy dreadful sentence, Lord, was just, "Return, ye sinners, to your dust." [A thousand of our years amount Scarce to a day in thine account; Like yesterday's departed light, Or the last watch of ending night. Death, like an overflowing stream, Sweeps us away; our life's a dream, An empty tale, a morning flower, Cut down and withered in an hour.] [Our age to seventy years is set; How short the time! how frail the state! And if to eighty we arrive, We rather sigh and groan than live. But O how oft thy wrath appears, And cuts off our expected years! Thy wrath awakes our humble dread; We fear the power that strikes us dead.] Teach us, O Lord, how frail is man; And kindly lengthen out our span, Till a wise care of piety Fit us to die, and dwell with thee.

The Frailty and Shortness of Life

Appears in 164 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90:5 First Line: Lord, what a feeble piece Lyrics: 1 Lord, what a feeble piece Is this our mortal frame! Our life! how poor a trifle 'tis, That scarce deserves the name! 2 Alas, the brittle clay That built our body first! And ev'ry month, and ev'ry day, 'Tis mould'ring back to dust. 3 Our moments fly apace, Our feeble pow'rs decay, Swift as a flood our hasty days Are sweeping us away. 4 Yet, if our days must fly We'll keep their end in sight, We'll spend them all in wisdom's way, And let them speed their flight. 5 They'll waft us sooner o'er This life's tempestuous sea; Soon we shall reach the peaceful shore Of blest eternity.

The Eternity of God, and Man's Mortality

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 23 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90 First Line: Lord, thou hast been thy children's God Lyrics: 1 Lord, thou hast been thy children's God, All-powerful, wise and good, and just, In every age their safe abode, Their hope, their refuge, and their trust, 2 Before thy word gave nature birth, Or spread the starry heavens abroad, Or formed the varied face of earth, From everlasting thou art God. 3 Great father of eternity, How short are ages in thy sight! A thousand years, how swift they fly, Like one short silent watch of night! 4 Uncertain life, how soon it flies! Dream of an hour, how short our bloom! Like spring's gay verdure now we rise, Cut down ere night to fill the tomb. 5 Teach us to count our shortening days, And with true diligence apply Our hearts to wisdom's sacred ways, That we may learn to live and die. Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90:13-17 Lyrics: 13 Turn yet again to us, O Lord, how long thus shall it be? Let it repent thee now for those that servants are to thee. 14 O with thy tender mercies, Lord, us early satisfy; so we rejoice shall all our days, and still be glad in thee. 15 According as the days have been wherein we grief have had, and years wherein we ill have seen, so do thou make us glad. 16 O let thy work and power appear thy servants’ face before; and shew unto their children dear thy glory evermore: 17 and let the beauty of the Lord our God be us upon: and our hands' works establish thou, establish them each one.
