O love divine, how sweet thou art!

Author: C. Wesley Appears in 379 hymnals Scripture: Luke 10:39-42 Lyrics: 1 O love divine, how sweet thou art! When shall I find my longing heart All taken up by thee? I thirst, I faint, I die to prove The greatness of redeeming love, The love of Christ to me. 2 God only knows the love of God; Oh, that it now were shed abroad In my poor, longing heart! For love I sigh, for love I pine; This only portion, Lord, be mine; Be mine this better part. 3 Oh, that I may forever sit, With Mary, at the Master's feet: Be this my happy choice-- My only care, delight, and bliss, My joy, my heaven on earth be this, To hear the Bridegroom's voice. 4 Oh, that I may, with favored John, Recline my weary head upon The dear Redeemer's breast! From care and sin and sorrow free, Give me, O Lord, to find in thee My everlasting rest. Topics: The Christian System Adoption And Sanctification; Perfect Love

One Thing needful

Author: Philip Doddridge Appears in 203 hymnals Scripture: Luke 10:42 First Line: Why will ye waste on trifling cares Lyrics: 1 Why will ye waste on trifling cares That life which God's compassion spares? While, in the various range of thought, The one thing needful is forgot? 2 Shall God invite you from above? Shall Jesus urge his dying love? Shall troubled conscience give you pain? And all these please unite in vain? 3 Not so your eyes will always view Those objects which you now pursue; Not so will heaven and hell appear, When death's decisive hour is near. 4 Almighty God! thy grace impart; Fix deep conviction on each heart: Nor let us waste on trifling cares That life which thy compassion spares. While we do his good will He abides with us still, And with all who will trust and obey. Refrain: Trust and obey -- For there’s no other way To be happy in Jesus But to trust and obey. 2 Not a shadow can rise, Not a cloud in the skies, But his smile quickly drives it away; Not a doubt nor a fear, Not a sigh nor a tear, Can abide while we trust and obey. [Refrain] 3 Not a burden we bear, Not a sorrow we share, But our toil he doth richly repay; Not a grief nor a loss, Not a frown nor a cross, But is blest if we trust and obey. [Refrain] 4 But we never can prove The delights of his love Until all on the altar we lay, For the favor he shows And the joy he bestows Are for those who will trust and obey. Choosing the Better Part

Author: Dr. Doddridge Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 165 hymnals Scripture: Luke 10:42 First Line: Beset with snares on every hand Lyrics: 1 Beset with snares on every hand, In life’s uncertain path I stand: Savior divine, diffuse thy light, To guide my doubtful footsteps right. 2 Engage this roving treacherous heart, To fix on Mary's better part; To scorn the trifles of a day, For joys, that none can take away. 3 Then let the wildest storms arise; Let tempests mingle earth and skies; No fatal Shipwreck shall I fear, But all my treasures with me bear. 4 If thou, my Jesus, still be nigh, Cheerful I live, and joyful die; Secure, when mortal comforts flee, To find ten thousand worlds in thee. One Thing's Needful; Lord, This Treasure

Author: Frances E. Cox; Johann H. Schröder Meter: 8.7.8.7.12.12.11.11 Appears in 6 hymnals Scripture: Luke 10:42 Lyrics: 1 One thing’s needful; Lord, this treasure Teach me highly to regard; All else, though it first give pleasure, Is a yoke that presses hard. Beneath it the heart is still fretting and striving, No true, lasting happiness ever deriving. The gain of this one thing all loss can requite And teach me in all things to find true delight. 2 Wilt thou find this one thing needful, Turn from all created things Unto Jesus and be heedful Of the blessed joy He brings. For where God and Man both in one are united, With God’s perfect fullness the heart is delighted; There, there is the worthiest lot and the best, My One and my All and my Joy and my Rest. 3 How were Mary’s tho'ts devoted Her eternal joy to find As intent each word she noted, At her Savior’s feet reclined! How kindled her heart, how devout was its feeling, While hearing the lessons that Christ was revealing! For Jesus all earthly concerns she forgot, And all was repaid in that one happy lot. 4 Thus my longings, heav’nward tending, Jesus, rest alone on Thee. Help me, thus on Thee depending; Savior, come and dwell in me. Although all the world should forsake and forget Thee, In love I will follow Thee, ne’er will I quit Thee. Lord Jesus, both spirit and life is Thy Word; And is there a joy which Thou dost not afford? 5 Wisdom’s highest, noblest treasure, Jesus, lies concealed in Thee; Grant that this may still the measure Of my will and actions be, Humility there and simplicity reigning, In paths of true wisdom my steps ever training. Oh, if I of Christ have this knowledge divine, The fullness of heavenly wisdom is mine. 6 Naught have I, O Christ, to offer Naught but Thee, my highest Good. Naught have I, O Lord, to proffer But Thy crimson-colored blood. Thy death on the cross hath Death wholly defeated And thereby my righteousness fully completed; Salvation’s white raiments I there did obtain, And in them in glory with Thee I shall reign. 7. Therefore Thou alone, my Savior, Shalt be All in all to me; Search my heart and my behavior, Root out all hypocrisy. Restrain me from wand'ring on pathways unholy And through all life’s pilgrimage keep my heart lowly. This one thing is needful, all others are vain; I count all but loss that I Christ may obtain. Amen. Topics: The Redeemer Used With Tune: EINS IST NOT

Sitting at the Feet of Jesus

Author: J. H. Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 107 hymnals Scripture: Luke 10:39 Lyrics: 1 Sitting at the feet of Jesus, Oh, what words I hear Him say! Happy place! so near, so precious! May it find me there each day; Sitting at the feet of Jesus, I would look upon the past; For His love has been so gracious, It has won my heart at last. 2 Sitting at the feet of Jesus, Where can mortal be more blest? There I lay my sins and sorrows, And, when weary, find sweet rest; Sitting at the feet of Jesus, There I love to weep and pray; While I from His fullness gather Grace and comfort every day. 3 Bless me, O my Savior, bless me, As *I sit low at Thy feet; [*I’m waiting] Oh, look down in love upon me, Let me see Thy face so sweet; Give me, Lord, the mind of Jesus, Keep me holy as He is; May I prove I’ve been with Jesus, Who is all my righteousness. Lo! I Come with Joy

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.8.7.6 Appears in 41 hymnals Scripture: Luke 10:40-42 First Line: Lo! I come with joy to do Lyrics: 1 Lo! I come with joy to do the Master's blessed will, him in outward works pursue, and serve his pleasure still; faithful to my Lord's commands, I still would choose the better part, serve with careful Martha's hands, and loving Mary's heart. 2 Thou, O Lord, my portion art, before I hence remove; now my treasure and my heart are all laid up above, far above all earthly things, while yet my hands are here employed, sees my soul the King of kings, and freely talks with God. 3 O that all might know the art of living thus to thee, find their heav'n begun below, and here thy glory see, walk in all the works prepared by thee, to exercise their grace, till they gain their full reward, and see thy glorious face!
