1 Fra Himmelen hid til os ned
Skal alt vort Gode komme,
Vi selv slet intet kan og veed
At gjøre os til Fromme;
Paa herren maa Vi Haabet slaa,
Og fast paa hannem bygge;
Hos ham ei er
Omskiftelser,
Og ei Forandrings Skygge.

2 Han ved sit ord og Helligaand
Til Livet os gjenfødte,
At vi som Planter af hans Haand
skal som en Førstegrøde
Med troens Frugt Bepryde smukt
Vort Levnet allevegne,

Ret kysse paa
Guds Haand, og ham tilbede!

5 Gud, ved din Aand os saa bered,
At daglig vi aftvætter
Vor Ondskabs Overslødighed
Og Syndens onde Pletter,
Saa hver kan se, At vi os te
Ny Skabninger at være,
Der for din Stol
Og Aasyn Sol
Vil sees i Himlens Ære!

He belonged to a rather poor family partly of Scottish origin and was educated a clergyman. In his youth, Kingo wrote a series of poems picturing humorous scenes in village life and a pastoral love poem, Chrysillis. He studied theology at the University of Copenhagen, graduating in 1654, and for some time acted as private tutor. In 1661 he was appointed vicar to the pastor at Kirke Helsinge, and in 1668 he was ordained a minister at his native town, where his poetic activity began.
