1 Herre, jeg har handlet ilde!
Syndens Magt blev mig for stor,
Veien jeg ei vander vilde,
Den du viser i dit Ord;
Og–hvor findes nu den Hule,
Hvor min Skam jeg kunde skjule?

2 Jeg kan mig for dig ei vare,
Du i Veien altid staar,
Vil jeg høit til Himmels fare,
Eller ned i Afgrund gaar,
Fløi jeg end til Verdens Ender,
Du er, hvor jeg mig henvender.

3 Jeg har syndet mod dig, Herre,
Syndet har jeg al min Dag,
Jeg gik frem fra Ondt til Værre,
Glemte dort min Sjæle-Sag;
Derfor nu jeg for din Vrede
Skjælve maa af Angst og græde.

4 O min Gud! om nogen kunde
Se og tælle Havets Sand,
Dog formaar han ingenlunde
Al min Synd og Uforstand
Og min Ondskab med sin Tale
Ret til Fulde af afmale.

5 Græder, mine Øine, græder,
Hjerte, dine Kilder bryd,
Flømmer over hine Steder,
Som har seet min Udyd!
Al min Graad, jeg Støv og Aske,
Kan dog ei min Synd afvaske.

6 Men, o Jesus, dine Vunder,
Ja, en Draabe af dit Blod
Gjøre kan det Naadens Under,
At min Skade vorder god;
Derfor hen til dig jeg haster,
Mig for dine Fødder kaster.

7 Al den Skyld, du hos mig finder,
Sænk den ned i Miskunds Sø,
To mig ren af mine Synder,
Gjør dem som den hvide Sne!
Lad din gode Aand mig drive,
At jeg fast ved dig maa blive!

Franck, Johann, son of Johann Franck, advocate and councillor at Guben, Brandenburg, was born at Guben, June 1, 1618. After his father's death, in 1620, his uncle by marriage, the Town Judge, Adam Tielckau, adopted him and sent him for his education to the schools at Guben, Cottbus, Stettin and Thorn. On June 28, 1638, he matriculated as a student of law at the University of Königsberg, the only German university left undisturbed by the Thirty Years' War. Here his religious spirit, his love of nature, and his friendship with such men as Simon Dach and Heinrich Held, preserved him from sharing in the excesses of his fellow students. He returned to Guben at Easter, 1640, at the urgent request of his mother, who wished to have him near her in… Go to person page >

Magnus Brostrup Landstad (born 7 October 1802 in Måsøy, Norway and died 8 October 1880 in Kristiania) was a Norwegian minister, psalmist and poet who published the first collection of authentic Norwegian traditional ballads in 1853. This work was criticized for unscientific methods, but today it is commonly accepted that he contributed significantly to the preservation of the traditional ballads. Landstad lived with his father Hans Landstad (1771–1838) who was also a minister, first in 1806 to Øksnes, to Vinje in 1811 and to Seljord in 1819. He took a theological degree (cand. theol) in 1827, and worked after that as the resident chaplain in Gausdal for six years. After that he worked in different parishes in Telemark, Østfold befo… Go to person page >
