How many, Lord, there be

1 How many, Lord, there be,
that strive to trouble me,
My Peace of Mind destroying!
And as their Numbers grow
so does their Hatred too,
In my Afflictions joying.
They do my Soul upbraid,
thought GOD himself's my Aid,
Yet know they not to fear him;
Insultingly they cry,
let him on GOD rely,
The LORD now more will hear him.

3 But thou art my Defence,
my Hope and Confidence,
In thee alone are placed;
My glory thou shalt raise,
and to thy endless Praise,
My Foes shall be disgraced.
When like Distress was nigh,
my sad and mournful Cry,
Was to the LORD addressed;
And from his holy Hill,
he did my Wish fulfill,
And all my Wrongs redressed.

3 In thy Protection blest,
secure I take my Rest,
No kind of Danger fearing;
When Morning gilds the Skies,
refresh'd again I rise,
Sweet Sleep my Spirit cheering.
Not all my Foes combin'd,
disturb my Peace of Mind,
Their Rage shall ne'er confound me.
To thee I lift my Voice,
and in thy Strength rejoice,
Tho' thousands should surround me.

4 Arise, O GOD, arise!
Disperse those Enemies,
That are my Life pursuing;
Let thy Almighty Hand,
their utmost Pow'r withstand,
And guard me safe from Ruin.
To GOD, who is my Song,
Salvation doth belong;
And they shall be defended;
Who hat lift up on high,
their supplicating Cry,
And on the LORD depended.
