1 The way our fathers traveled is good enough for me,
They followed in the footsteps that led from Calvary.
It led them up to glory, that land of endless day,
I expect to get to Heaven by the same old way.

Refrain:
O this blessèd old way, it is good enough for me,
It is good enough for me, it is good enough for me;
My Savior goes before me, I follow Him each day,
I expect to get to Heaven by the same old way.

2 The world may sneer and tell me I’ll never reach the goal,
That good works are sufficient to save a human soul,
But while the world is talking, I still will watch and pray,
I expect to get to Heaven by the same old way. [Refrain]

3 The world may sneer and tell me I’ll never reach the goal,
That good works are sufficient to save a human soul,
But while the world is talking, I still will watch and pray,
I expect to get to Heaven by the same old way. [Refrain]

4 When bowers of sin entice me to rest my weary feet,
I find in Christ my Savior a safe, a sure retreat;
He tells me to press onward, and not look back, nor stay,
I expect to get to Heaven by the same old way. [Refrain]

5 Millions are now in glory, in shining white arrayed,
Who traveled this same pathway, and often were dismayed,
But happy now in glory they sing both night and day,
I expect to get to Heaven by the same old way. [Refrain]

Johnson Oatman, Jr., son of Johnson and Rachel Ann Oatman, was born near Medford, N. J., April 21, 1856. His father was an excellent singer, and it always delighted the son to sit by his side and hear him sing the songs of the church. Outside of the usual time spent in the public schools, Mr. Oatman received his education at Herbert's Academy, Princetown, N. J., and the New Jersey Collegiate Institute, Bordentown, N. J. At the age of nineteen he joined the M.E. Church, and a few years later he was granted a license to preach the Gospel, and still later he was regularly ordained by Bishop Merrill. However, Mr. Oatman only serves as a local preacher. For many years he was engaged with his father in the mercantile business at Lumberton… Go to person page >
