Representative Text

1 Ye who are weary, broken in spirit,
Christ is the friend, the friend that you need;
He that hath ears today let him heart it,
He is the friend you need.

Chorus:
Tenderly calling, tenderly calling;
Unto His loving call give heed;
Why not receive Him, trust and believe Him?
Christ is the friend you heed,
He is the friend you need.

2 Bowed ‘neath the weight of sins that oppress you,
Christ is the friend, the friend that you need;
He hath the pow’r to comfort and bless you,
He is the friend you need. [Chorus]

3 Come as you are, make no preparation,
Christ is the friend, the friend that you need;
Fall at His feet and trust for salvation,
He is the friend you need. [Chorus]

4 Come in His grace and mercy believing,
Christ is the friend, the friend that you need;
Fulness of blessing freely receiving,
He is the friend you need. [Chorus]

5 Make no delay, the moments are precious
Christ is the friend, the friend that you need;
Now is the time He waits to be gracious,
He is the friend you need. [Chorus]

6 When the dark hours of trial o’ertake you,
Christ is the friend, the friend that you need;
Harder then lean, He’ll never forsake you,
He is the friend you need. [Chorus]

7 When from the scenes of earth you are passing,
Christ is the friend, the friend that you need;
When the cold stream of death you are crossing
He is the friend you need. [Chorus]

Lelia (Mrs. C.H.) Morris (1862-1929) was born in Pennsville, Morgan County, Ohio. When her family moved to Malta on the Muskingum River she and her sister and mother had a millinery shop in McConnelsville. She and her husband Charles H. Morris were active in the Methodist Episcopal Church and at the camp meetings in Sebring and Mt. Vernon. She wrote hymns as she did her housework. Although she became blind at age 52 she continued to write hymns on a 28-foot long blackboard that her family had built for her. She is said to have written 1000 texts and many tunes including "Sweeter as the years go by." Mary Louise VanDyke Go to person page >
