Emily R. Brink

b. 1940 Scripture: Matthew 14:25-31 Composer (descant) of "OF ALL THE PEOPLE" in Songs for Life Emily R. Brink is a Senior Research Fellow of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and Adjunct Professor of Church Music and Worship at Calvin Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her main areas of responsibility are conference planning and global resources. She is program manager of the annual Calvin Symposium on Worship, which draws more than 70 presenters and 1600 participants from around the world. She also travels widely to lecture and to learn about worship in different parts of the world, especially in Asia, where she has lectured in Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan. Her areas of interest include congregational song from all times and places; psalmody; hymnal editing. She was editor of four hymnals and consults with a wide range of churches on worship renewal issues. Dr. Brink is active in the American Guild of Organists, serving in both local and national offices, as well as in the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada (president from 1990 1992) and named a Fellow of the Hymn Society in 2004 in recognition of distinguished services to hymnody and hymnology. --internal.calvinseminary.edu/

Arthur Henry Brown

1830 - 1926 Person Name: A. H. Brown, 1830-1926 Scripture: Matthew 14:29 Composer of "SAFFRON WALDEN" in Common Praise Born: July 24, 1830, Brentwood, Essex, England. Died: February 15, 1926, Brentwood, Essex, England. Almost completely self taught, Brown began playing the organ at the age 10. He was organist of the Brentwood Parish Church, Essex (1842-53); St. Edward’s, Romford (1853-58); Brentwood Parish Church (1858-88); St. Peter’s Church, South Weald (from 1889); and Sir Anthony Browne’s School (to 1926). A member of the London Gregorian Association, he helped assemble the Service Book for the annual festival in St. Paul’s Cathedral. He supported the Oxford Movement, and pioneered the restoration of plainchant and Gregorian music in Anglican worship. Brown edited various publications, including the Altar Hymnal. His other works include settings of the Canticles and the Holy Communion Service, a Children’s Festival Service, anthems, songs, part songs, and over 800 hymn tunes and carols. Music: Alleluia! John Ernest Bode

1816 - 1874 Person Name: John Ernest Bode (1816-1874) Scripture: Matthew 14:22-33 Author of "O Jesus, I Have Promised" in Common Praise (1998) John E. Bode (b. St. Pancras, England, 1816; d. Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire, England, 1874) A fine student at Christ Church, Oxford, England, and a prominent scholar who gave the famous Bampton Lectures ("for the exposition and defense of the Christian faith") at Oxford in 1855, was a rector in Westwell, Oxfordshire, and in Castle Camps. This gifted poet and hymn writer published Hymns for the Gospel of the Day, for Each Sunday and Festivals of Our Lord in 1860. Bert Polman ============== Bode, John Ernest, M.A., son of Mr. William Bode, late of the General Post Office, b. 1816, and educated at Eton, the Charter House, and at Christ Church, Oxford, graduating B.A. 1837, and M.A. in due course. Taking Holy Orders in 1841, he became Rector of Westwell, Oxfordshire, 1847; and then of Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire, 1860. He was also for a time Tutor of his College, and Classical Examiner. His Bampton Lectures were delivered in 1855. He d. at Castle Camps, Oct. 6, 1874. In addition to his Bampton Lectures, and Ballads from Herodotus, he published Hymns from the Gospel of the Day for each Sunday and Festivals of our Lord, 1860; and Short Occasional Poems, Lond., Longmans, 1858. In addition to his well-known hymn, “O Jesu, I have promised " (q. v.), the following from his Hys. from the Gospel are also in common use:— 1. God of heaven, enthroned in might. H. Trinity. 2. Thomas Binney

1798 - 1874 Person Name: Thomas Binney, 1798-1874 Scripture: Matthew 14:22-33 Adapter of "MANNHEIM" in Common Praise (1998) Binney, Thomas, D.D., b. at Newcastle-on-Tyne, in 1798, and educated at Wymondley College, Hertfordshire. Entering the ministry, he was successively pastor of a congregation at Bedford, an Independent Chapel at Newport, Isle of Wight, and of the King's Weigh House Chapel, London, 1829. The University of Aberdeen conferred upon him the LL.D. degree. He died Feb. 23, 1874. His works, exceeding 50 in number, include Life of the Rev. Stephen Morell, 1826; Money, 1864; St. Paul, his Life and Ministry, &c. He wrote a few hymns, including "Eternal Light! Horace Clarence Boyer

George Brandon

Received his bachelor's degree from the College of the Pacific in 1945, and his degree as Master of Sacred Music from Union Theological Seminary, New York, in 1952. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Stockton, California. --The Hymn Society, DNAH Archives ===================== George Brandon is one of the younger church musicians who is alert to the value of hymns. He received his bachelor's degree from the College of the Pacific in 1945 and his degree as Master of Sacred Music from Union Theological Seminary, New York, in 1952. He is a member of the First Christian Church of Stockton, California, his home town. He has had one anthem published, "The Word Became Flesh." 1771 - 1844 Person Name: Bache Scripture: Matthew 14:14 Author of "See how he loved! exclaimed the Jews" in The Voice of Praise Bache, Sarah, 1771-1844, kept a school for many years in Birmingham. Her hymn, "'See how he loved,' exclaimed the Jews," Love of Christ, was contributed to the Exeter Collection, 1812. 1861 - 1925 Person Name: H. Elliott Button Scripture: Matthew 14:15-35 Composer of "AVON VIEW" in The Riverdale Hymn Book Born: August 8, 1861, Clevedon, Somerset, England. Died: Circa August 1925, Hampstead, England. Button’s father was master of a private school, and excelled as an organist. Elliot was a self taught musician, and besides being solo alto at Holy Trinity Church, Upper Chelsea, was a pianist, organist, and violinist. He was also at one time was an editor for the Novello publishing company. He harmonized a number of tunes in The Primitive Methodist Hymnal Supplement with Tunes (London: Primitive Methodist Publishing House, 1912), and edited the third series of the Bristol Tune Book.
