Nancy Byrd Turner

1880 - 1971 Author of "Every Year at Easter Time" in Hymns for Primary Worship Turner, Nancy Byrd. Born in Boydton, Virginia, July 29, 1880, daughter of Byrd Thornton Turner and Nancy Addison (Harrison) Turner. Composed her first verse at three. First published verse at age of 8--a romantic ballad, "Ruth in the Dentist's Chair" (he fell in love). Her father was an Episcopal minister; they lived in about a dozen small towns or rural communities during her childhood. In 1916, she went to Boston and joined the staff of Youth's Companion. She wrote under many pen names, and published in several magazines. She won numerous awards, including the "Golden Rose" of the New England Poetry Society and the Lyric Associates award of 1951. --Letter from Turner Rose to Jean Woodward Steele, Westminster Press, 1 February 1974, DNAH Archives.

St. Joseph the Hymnographer

810 - 886 Person Name: Joseph the Hymnographer, ca. 800-883 Author of "Let Our Choir New Anthems Raise" in Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) Joseph, St., the Hymnographer. A native of Sicily, and of the Sicilian school of poets is called by Dr. Neale (in his Hymns of the Eastern Church), Joseph of the Studium, in error. He left Sicily in 830 for a monastic life at Thessalonica. Thence he went to Constantinople; but left it, during the Iconoclastic persecution, for Rome. He was for many years a slave in Crete, having been captured by pirates. After regaining his liberty, he returned to Constantinople. He established there a monastery, in connection with the Church of St. John Chrysostom, which was filled with inmates by his eloquence. He was banished to the Chersonese for defence of the Icons, but was recalled by the empress Theodora, and made Sceuophylax (keeper of the sacred vessels) in the Great Church of Constantinople, through the favour of the patriarch Ignatius. He stood high also in the favour of Photius, the rival and successor of Ignatius, and accompanied him into banishment. He died at an advanced age in 883. He is commemorated in the Calendars of the Greek Church on April 3rd. He is the most voluminous of the Greek hymnwriters. There are more than two hundred Canons under the acrostic of his name, in the Menaea. Cardinal Pitra says he is reported to have composed a thousand. There is some difficulty in distinguishing his works from those of the brother of Theodore of the Studium, Joseph of Thessalonica. This latter poet, and not the more celebrated Joseph the Hymnographer, was named Joseph of the Studium. [Rev. H. 1917 - 1994 tr. al castellano of "Vuestro Himno Hoy Cantad" in Himnario Bautista Born: January 4, 1917, Managua, Nicaragua. Died: April 1, 1994, Texas. Pseudonyms: Daniel R. Diaz Pablo Filós Robleto attended the Colegio Bautista in Managua (graduated 1940), and the Baptist Seminary in New Orleans, Louisiana, and pastored churches in Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Texas. He also directed the Department of Administration of Churches and Pastoral Leadership, edited The Christian Home for the Casa Bautista de Publicaciones, and translated about 200 hymns from English to Spanish. The following hymns in Mrs. Brock's Children's Hymn Book 1881:—"Looking upward every day " (Onwards), and "O help me, Lord, this day to be" (Morning), are signed with this name. John J. Overholt

1918 - 2000 Person Name: Compiler Alterer (stanza 1) of "Let Our Hearts New Anthems Raise" in The Christian Hymnary. Bks. 1-4 John J. Overholt was born to an Amish family of limited means in the state of Ohio in 1918. As a child he was soon introduced to his father's personal collection of gospel songs and hymns, which was to have a marked influence on his later life. With his twin brother Joe, he early was exposed to the Amish-Mennonite tradition hymn-singing and praising worship. An early career in Christian service led to a two-year period of relief work in the country of Poland following World War II. During that interim he began to gather many European songs and hymns as a personal hobby, not realizing that these selections would become invaluable to The Christian Hymnary which was begun in 1960 and completed twelve years later in 1972, with a compilation of 1000 songs, hymns and chorales. (The largest Menn. hymnal). A second hymnal was begun simultaneously in the German language entitled Erweckungs Lieder Nr.1 which was brought to completion in 1986. This hymnal has a total of 200 selections with a small addendum of English hymns. Mr. Overholt married in 1965 to an accomplished soprano Vera Marie Sommers, who was not to be outdone by her husband's creativity and compiled a hymnal of 156 selections entitled Be Glad and Sing, directed to children and youth and first printed in 1986. During this later career of hymn publishing, Mr. Overholt also found time for Gospel team work throughout Europe. At this writing he is preparing for a 5th consecutive tour which he arranges and guides. The countries visited will be Belgium, Switzerland, France, Germany, Poland, USSR and Romania. Mr. Overholt was called to the Christian ministry in 1957 and resides at Sarasota, Florida where he is co-minister of a Beachy Amish-Mennonite Church.
