Thy Mercies, Lord, shall be my Song

Appears in 23 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 89 Lyrics: 1 Thy Mercies, Lord, shall be my Song, My Song on them shall ever dwell; To Ages yet unborn, my Tongue Thy never-failing Truth shall tell. 2 I have affirm'd and still maintain, Thy Mercy shall for ever last; Thy Truth that does the Heav'ns sustain, Like them shall stand for ever fast. 3 Thus spak'st thou by thy Prophet's Voice; "With David I a League have made; "To him, my Servant, and my Choice, "By solemn Oath this Grant convey'd; 4 "While Earth, and Seas, and Skies endure, "Thy Seed shall in my Sight remain; "To them thy Throne I will ensure, "They shall to endless Ages reign." 5 For such stupendous Truth and Love, Both Heav'n and Earth just Praises owe, By Choirs of Angels sung above, And by assembled Saints below. 6 What Seraph of Celestial Birth To vie with Isr'el's God shall dare? Or who among the Gods of Earth, With our Almighty Lord compare? 7 With Rev'rence and Religious Dread, His Saints should to his Temple press; His Fear thro' all their Hearts should spread, Who his Almighty Name confess. 8 Lord God of Armies, who can boast Of Strength or Pow'r, like thine renown'd? Of such a num'rous Faithful Host, As that which does thy Throne surround? 9 Thou dost the lawless Sea controul, And change the prospect of the Deep; Thou mak'st the sleeping Billows roul, Thou mak'st the rolling Billows sleep. 10 Thou brak'st in pieces Rahab's Pride, And did'st oppressing Pow'r disarm: Thy scatter'd Foes have dearly try'd The Force of thy resistless Arm. 11 In Thee the sov'reign Right remains Of Earth and Heav'n; thee, Lord, alone The World and all that it contains, Their Maker and Preserver own. 12 The Poles on which the Globe does rest, Were form'd by thy creating Voice; Tabor and Hermon, East and West In thy sustaining Pow'r rejoice. 13 Thy Arm is mighty, strong thy Hand, Yet, Lord, thou dost with Justice reign; 14 Possest of absolute Command, Thou Truth and Mercy dost maintain. 15 Happy, thrice happy they, who hear Thy sacred Trumpet's joyful Sound; Who may at Festivals appear, With thy most glorious Presence crown'd. 16 Thy Saints shall always be o'erjoy'd, Who on thy sacred Name rely; And, in thy Righteousness employ'd, Above their Foes be rais'd on high. 17 For in thy Strength they shall advance, Whose Conquests from thy Favour spring: 18 The Lord of Hosts is our Defence, And Isr'el's God our Isr'el's King. 19 Thus spak'st thou by thy Prophet's Voice, "A mighty Champion I will send; "From Judah's Tribe have I made Choice "Of one who shall the rest defend. 20 "My Servant David I have found, "With holy Oil anointed him; 21 "Him shall the Hand support that crown'd, "And guard that gave the Diadem. 22 "No Prince from him shall Tribute force, "No son of Strife shall him annoy; 23 "His spiteful Foes I will disperse, "And them before his Face destroy. 24 "My Truth and Grace shall him sustain; "His Armies, in well order'd Ranks, 25 "Shall conquer, from the Tyrian Main "To Tigris and Euphrates Banks. 26 "Me for his Father he shall take, "His God and Rock of Safety call; 27 "Him I my first-born Son will make, "And earthly Kings his Subjects all. 28 "To him my Mercy I'll secure, "My Cov'nant make for ever fast; 29 "His Seed for ever shall endure, "His Throne, till Heav'n dissolve, shall last. Part II 30 "But if his Heirs my law forsake, "And from my sacred Precepts stray; 31 "If they my righteous Statutes break, "Nor strictly my Commands obey; 32 "Their Sins I'll visit with a Rod, "And for their Folly make them smart; 33 "Yet will not cease to be their God, "Nor from my Truth, like them, depart. 34 'My cov'nant I will ne'er revoke, "But in Remembrance fast retain; "The Thing that once my Lips have spoke "Shall in eternal Force remain. 35 "Once have I sworn, but once for all, "And made my Holiness the tie, "That I my Grant will ne'er recall, "Nor to my Servant David lie. 36 "Whose Throne and Race the constant Sun "Shall, like his Course, establish'd see: 37 "Of this my Oath, thou conscious Moon, "In Heav'n my faithful Witness be." 38 Such was thy gracious Promise, Lord, But thou hast now our Tribes forsook, Thy own Anointed hast abhorr'd, And turn'd on him thy wrathful Look. 39 Thou seemest to have render'd void The Cov'nant with thy Servant made, Thou hast his Dignity destroy'd, And in the Dust his Honour laid. 40 Of strong Holds thou hast him bereft, And brought his Bulwarks to decay; 41 His frontier Coasts defenceeless left, A public Scorn, and common Prey. 42 His Ruin does glad Triumphs yield To Foes advanc'd by Thee to Might; 43 Thou hast his conqu'ring Sword unsteel'd, His Valour turn'd to shameful Flight. 44 His Glory is to Darkness fled, His Throne is levll'd with the Ground; 45 His Youth to wretched Bondage led, With Shame o'erwhelm'd & Sorrow drown'd. 46 How long shall we thy Absence mourn? Wilt thou for ever, Lord, retire? Shall thy consuming Anger burn 'Till that and we at once expire? 47 Consider, Lord, how short a Space Thou dost for mortal Life ordain; No Method to prolong the Race, But loading it with Grief and Pain. 48 What Man is he that can controul Death's strict unalterable Doom? Or rescue from the Grave his soul, The Grave that must Mankind entomb? 49 Lord, where's thy Love, thy boundless Grace, The Oath to which thy Truth did seal, Consign'd to David and his Race, The Grant which Time shou'd ne'er repeal? 50 See how thy Servants treated are With Infamy, Reproach and Spite; Which in my silent Breast I bear From Nations of licentious Might. 51 How they, reproaching thy great Name, Have made thy Servants Hope their Jest: 52 Yet thy just praises we'll proclaim, And ever sing, The Lord be blest. Amen. Amen.

The gospel Jubilee

Author: Dr. Doddridge Appears in 50 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 89:15 First Line: Loud let the tuneful trumpet sound Lyrics: 1 Loud let the tuneful trumpet sound, And spread the joyful tidings round, Let every soul with transport hear, And hail the Lord's accepted year. 2 Ye Debtors whom he gives to know, That you ten thousand talents owe, When humble at this feet you fall, Your gracious GOD forgives them all. 3 Slaves, that have borne the heavy Chain Of sin and Hell's tyrannic reign, To liberty assert your claim, And urge the great Redeemer's name. 4 The rich inheritance of Heaven, Your joy, your boast, is freely given, Fair Salem you arrival waits, With golden streets and pearly gates. 5 Her bless'd inhabitants no more, Bondage and poverty deplore; No Debt, but love immensely great, Their Joy still rises with the Debt. 6 O happy Souls that know the sound! Celestial Light their steps surround, And shew the Jubilee begun, Which thro' eternal Years shall run. Topics: Before Sermon

Psalm 89: God's mercies I will ever sing

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 11 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 89 First Line: God's mercies I will ever sing Lyrics: 1God’s mercies I will ever sing; and with my mouth I shall Thy faithfulness make to be known to generations all. 2For mercy shall be built, said I, for ever to endure; Thy faithfulness, ev’n in the heav’ns, thou wilt establish sure. 3I with my chosen One have made a cov’nant graciously; And to my servant, whom I lov’d, to David sworn have I; 4That I thy seed establish shall for ever to remain, And will to generations all thy throne build and maintain. 5The praises of thy wonders, Lord, the heavens shall express; And in the congregation of saints thy faithfulness. 6For who in heaven with the Lord may once himself compare? Who is like God among the sons of those that mighty are? 7Great fear in meeting of the saints is due unto the Lord; And he of all about him should with rev’rence be ador’d. 8O thou that art the Lord of hosts, what Lord in mightiness Is like to thee? who compass’d round art with thy faithfulness. 9Ev’n in the raging of the sea thou over it dost reign; And when the waves thereof do swell, thou stillest them again. 10Rahab in pieces thou didst break, like one that slaughter’d is; And with thy mighty arm thou hast dispers’d thine enemies. 11The heav’ns are thine, thou for thine own the earth dost also take; The world, and fulness of the same, thy pow’r did found and make. 12The north and south from thee alone their first beginning had; Both Tabor mount and Hermon hill shall in thy name be glad. 13Thou hast an arm that’s full of pow’r, thy hand is great in might; And thy right hand exceedingly exalted is in height. 14Justice and judgment of thy throne are made the dwelling-place; Mercy, accompany’d with truth, shall go before thy face. 15O greatly bless’d the people are the joyful sound that know; In brightness of thy face, O Lord, they ever on shall go. 16They in thy name shall all the day rejoice exceedingly; And in thy righteousness shall they exalted be on high. 17Because the glory of their strength doth only stand in thee; And in thy favour shall our horn and pow’r exalted be. 18For God is our defence; and he to us doth safety bring: The Holy One of Israel is our almighty King. 19In vision to thy Holy One thou saidst, I help upon A strong one laid; out of the folk I rais’d a chosen one; 20Ev’n David, I have found him out a servant unto me; And with my holy oil my King anointed him to be. 21With whom my hand shall stablish’d be; mine arm shall make him strong. 22On him the foe shall not exact, nor son of mischief wrong. 23I will beat down before his face all his malicious foes; I will them greatly plague who do with hatred him oppose. 24My mercy and my faithfulness with him yet still shall be; And in my name his horn and pow’r men shall exalted see. 25His hand and pow’r shall reach afar; I’ll set it in the sea; And his right hand established shall in the rivers be. 26Thou art my Father, he shall cry, thou art my God alone; And he shall say, Thou art the Rock of my salvation. 27I’ll make him my first-born, more high than kings of any land. 28My love I’ll ever keep for him, my cov’nant fast shall stand. 29His seed I by my pow’r will make for ever to endure; And, as the days of heav’n, his throne shall stable be, and sure. 30But if his children shall forsake my laws, and go astray, And in my judgments shall not walk, but wander from my way: 31If they my laws break, and do not keep my commandements; 32I’ll visit then their faults with rods, their sins with chastisements. 33Yet I’ll not take my love from him, nor false my promise make. 34My cov’nant I’ll not break, nor change what with my mouth I spake. 35Once by my holiness I sware, to David I’ll not lie; 36His seed and throne shall, as the sun, before me last for aye. 37It, like the moon, shall ever be establish’d stedfastly; And like to that which in the heav’n doth witness faithfully. 38But thou, displeased, hast cast off, thou didst abhor and loathe; With him that thine anointed is thou hast been very wroth. 39Thou hast thy servant’s covenant made void, and quite cast by; Thou hast profan’d his crown, while it cast on the ground doth lie. 40Thou all his hedges hast broke down, his strong holds down hast torn. 41He to all passers-by a spoil, to neighbours is a scorn. 42Thou hast set up his foes’ right hand; mad’st all his en’mies glad: 43Turn’d his sword’s edge, and him to stand in battle hast not made. 44His glory thou hast made to cease, his throne to ground down cast; 45Shorten’d his days of youth, and him with shame thou cover’d hast. 46How long, Lord, wilt thou hide thyself? for ever, in thine ire? And shall thine indignation burn like unto a fire? 47Remember, Lord, how short a time I shall on earth remain: O wherefore is it so that thou has made all men in vain? 48What man is he that liveth here, and death shall never see? Or from the power of the grave what man his soul shall free? 49Thy former loving-kindnesses, O Lord, where be they now? Those which in truth and faithfulness to David sworn hast thou? 50Mind, Lord, thy servant’s sad reproach; how I in bosom bear The scornings of the people all, who strong and mighty are. 51Wherewith thy raging enemies reproach’d, O Lord, think on; Wherewith they have reproach’d the steps of thine anointed one. 52All blessing to the Lord our God let be ascribed then: For evermore so let it be. Amen, yea, and amen.
