M. B. C. Slade

1826 - 1882 Person Name: Mrs. B. C. Slade Hymnal Number: 38 Author of "Sweet Sabbath-school" in Jasper and Gold Mary Bridges Canady Slade USA 1826-1882. Born in Fall River, MA, she was well-educated and became a minister's wife, teacher, and poet. She was assistant editor of The New England Journal of Education. She also authored hymns, Sunday school materials and books on education, primarily used for training teachers. She authored a children's magazine, “Wide-awake”. She and her husband were active in the underground railroad (helping slaves achieve their freedom). She spent her whole life living in the same town. John Perry

M. M. Wells

1815 - 1895 Hymnal Number: 98 Author of "Holy Spirit, faithful Guide" in Jasper and Gold Converted to Christianity as a youth at a mission in Buffalo, New York, Marcus Morris Wells (b. Cooperstown, NY, 1815; d. Hartwick, NY, 1895) spent most of his life near Hartwick as a farmer and maker of farm implements. He is remembered in hymnody for writing both the text and tune of "Holy Spirit, Faithful Guide." "On a Saturday afternoon, October 1858, while at work in my cornfield, the sentiment of the hymn came to me," writes Wells. "The next day, Sunday, being a very stormy day, I finished the hymn and wrote the tune for it and sent it to Prof. I. B. Woodbury." Isaac Woodbury was the editor of the New York Musical Pioneer, and the original text and tune were first published in that periodical's November 1858 issue. The hymn has since been repeated in several English and American collections, including I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, 1878. Erastus Johnson

1826 - 1909 Person Name: E. Johnson Hymnal Number: 102 Author of "Oh, then, to the Rock let me fly" in Jasper and Gold Johnson, Erastus. (April 20, 1826--June 16, 1909, Waltham, Massachusetts). This man whose life was singularly active and varied was born in a logging camp at Lincoln, Maine. He was buried in Jackson, Maine. He entered the Academy at Calais, Maine, at the age of fifteen, spent two years there, taught school for the next six, and then entered Bangor Theological Seminary. His health failed, and, threatened with the loss of his sight, was compelled to give up preparation for the ministry. On the advice of his physician he took a sea voyage, embarging on the ship Gold Hunter en route from New York to California. The crew of the ship mutinied just before rounding Cape Horn and as Johnson was the only person on board who knew anything about navigation, other than the captive officers, he was pressed into service to take the ship on to its destination, San Francisco. This he was able to do successfully. Not a seeker after California's newfound gold, he was, variously, a rancher in California, a farmer in Washington state, in the oil business in Pennsylvania for some twenty years, and again a farmer in Maine until his retirement in Waltham, Mass. As ardent Methodist, always interested in religious work, especially in the Y.M.C.A., he was a lifelong student of the Bible, a fluent speaker, and a musician of moderate attainment. He published one book of poems, most of which were of interest only to members of his immediate family. Phoebe Palmer

1807 - 1874 Person Name: Mrs. Palmer Hymnal Number: 37 Author of "Haste away!" in Jasper and Gold Palmer, Phoebe, an American Methodist, b. 1807, and d. in 1874, wrote "Blessed Bible! how I love thee" (Holy Scriptures), and “O! when shall I sweep through the gates" (Heaven Anticipated). Albert Midlane

1825 - 1909 Hymnal Number: 131 Author of "Revive thy work, O Lord!" in Jasper and Gold Midlane, Albert, was born at Newport, Isle of Wight, Jan. 23, 1825, and was engaged in business in that town for many years. To his Sunday school teacher he ascribes the honour of prompting him to poetic efforts: and the same teacher did much to shape his early life. His first printed hymn, "Hark! in the presence of our God," was written in September, 1842, at Carisbrooke Castle, and printed in the Youth’s Magazine in November of the same year. Since then he has written over 300, and of these a large proportion are in common use. They appeared in magazines and small mission hymn-books, including:— (1) The Youth's Magazine; (2) The British Messenger; (3) The London Messenger; (4) Trotter's Evangelical Hymn Book, 1860; (5) The Ambassador's Hymn Book, 1861; (6) Second edition of the same, 1868; (7)Hymn Book for Youth; (8) Good News for the Little Ones, 1860; (9) William Carter's Gospel Hymn Book, 1862; and several other works of a similar kind. In addition to several small works in prose, Mr. Midlane has gathered his verse together from time to time and published it as:— (1) Poetry addressed to Sabbath School Teachers, 1844; (2) Vecta Garland, 1850; (3) Leaves from Olivet, 1864; (4) Gospel Echoes, 1865; (5) Above the Bright Blue Sky, 1867; (6) Early Lispings, 1880. Of the hymns contained in these works nearly 200 have been in common use from 1861 to 1887, the most popular being "There's a Friend for little children." The hymn-books, however, in which many of them are found are usually very small, are used in what are commonly known as Gospel Missions, and have gradually given way to other and more important collections. We therefore append only those hymns which are at the present time in use in official or quasi-official hymn-books, or such collections as have a wide circulation. Those hymns which are omitted from the following list may be found in the works given above, and especially in the Gospel Echoes. The collections in which these hymns are mainly found are Spurgeon's Our Own Hymn Book, 1866; Snepp's Songs of Grace & Glory, 1872-3; Hurditch's Enlarged London Hymn Book, 1873, and smaller books for Evangelical mission work. Of Mr. Midlane's hymns as a whole, Miher's estimate that "His hymns are full of spiritual thought, careful in their wording, and often very pleasing without reaching the highest form of poetical excellence " (Singers and Songs, p. 572), is just. Mr. Midlane published in 1901 The Bright Blue Sky Hymn Book, of 315 of his hymns, and the same year The Gospel Hall Hymn Book, for use in the Gospel Hall, Newport, I.W., with 218 additional, making 533 original compositions. A broad-sheet of seven special hymns for Jewish children, in connection with the Mildmay Mission to the Jews, was also issued in December, 1904. Phoebe Cary

1824 - 1871 Person Name: Phoebe Carey Hymnal Number: 117 Author of "I'm nearer home" in Jasper and Gold Phoebe Cary, (1824-1871) was born and raised in Mount Healthy in Hamilton County, Ohio. Her family came from Lyme, New Hampshire to Ohio when her grandfather was given land in return for his service in the Continental Army. She was the younger sister of Alice Cary (1820-1871). She and Alice submitted poetry to religious periodicals. Phoebe remained in Ohio and continued to write many hymns, including, "One sweetly solemn thought." Mary Louise VanDyke =========================================== Cary, Phoebe, sister of Alice Cary, born near Cincinnati, Ohio, Sept. 4, 1824, and died within six months of the death of the same sister at Newport, July 31, 1871. Her works include Poems and Parodies, 1854; and Poems of Faith, Hope and Love, 1868. With Dr. Charles F. Deems she compiled Hymns for all Christians, 1869. Her hymns are:— 1. One sweetly solemn thought. Anticipation of Heaven. This piece was not intended for public use, nor is it a suitable metre for musical treatment, yet it has won universal acceptance and popularity. In some instances this has been attained by change of metre as in the Supplement to the Baptist Psalms & Hymns 1880, No. 1185. Johnson's Encyclopedia is in error in saying it was "written at the age of 17." The Congregational Quarterly for Oct., 1874, says, "it was written, she tells us, in the little back third story bedroom, one Sabbath morning in 1852, on her return from church." This statement shows that it was composed when she was 28, and not 17. The popularity of the hymn in Great Britain arose mainly through its use in the Evangelistic services of Messrs. Moody and Sankey. In the Protestant Episcopal Hymns for Church and Home, Phila., 1860, No. 383, it is given as "A sweetly solemn thought." Sophia T. Griswold

1828 - 1903 Person Name: Mrs. S. T. Griswold Hymnal Number: 33 Author of "The Bright and Morning Star" in Jasper and Gold Sophia (Paulina) Taylor Griswold Canada/USA 1828-1903. Born in Canada, she moved to the U.S. and lived in Chicago, IL. She married Dr William R Griswold, a native of New York, and they had one daughter, Eva. She was a poet who wrote hymn lyrics for tunes composed by hymnists George Root, Philip Bliss, George Stebbins and others. She died in Chicago. John Perry

C. C. McCabe

1836 - 1906 Person Name: Chaplain C. C. McCabe Hymnal Number: 96 Adapter of "I am far frae my hame, an' I'm weary aften-whiles" in Jasper and Gold Charles Cardwell McCabe’s story begins during the Civil War when at age 25 he was appointed chaplain of the 122nd Regiment of Ohio Volunteers. He read in The Atlantic Julia Ward Howe’s “Battle Hymn of the Republic” fit to the popular marching tune “John Brown’s body” and immediately taught it to his regiment. As they moved out to Virginia and became part of a larger Union regiment they took The Battle Hymn with them. Captured and sent to Libby Prison in Richmond, he led the prisoners on the long 150 mile march in singing The Battle Hymn to raise their spirits and maintain morale. Under terrible prison conditions they sang; people remembered standing outside the prison to listen. At the news of Lee’s defeat McCabe again led all the prisoners in singing “national airs”. He contracted typhoid, and when prisoners were exchanged at Fortress Monroe, VA he weighed less than 100 pounds. After prison he worked as a fund raiser for the U.S. Christian Commission in Washington. He often officiated at four or five church services around Washington camps and hospitals, sometimes walking ten miles. He told of refusing an invitation to a white folks’ church so he could preach to a congregation of former slaves where he gave to the choir copies of the Battle Hymn. On Feb. 2, 1864 he attended a meeting of the House of Representatives for a celebration of the second anniversary of the Christian Commission which Lincoln attended. When McCabe led the singing of the Battle Hymn Lincoln was so moved that he asked for it to be sung again. McCabe attended Lincoln’s funeral in Springfield, IL and was asked to sing the Battle Hymn there. After the war McCabe was appointed to Spencer Chapel in Portsmouth, OH and became a major fundraiser for his alma mater [Ohio] Wesleyan University’s endowment fund. For forty years he lectured throughout the country as Secretary of the Church Extension Society. In 1896 he was elected to the Methodist episcopacy, unofficially named “The Singing Bishop”.
