Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire, England, 1874) A fine student at Christ Church, Oxford, England, and a prominent scholar who gave the famous Bampton Lectures ("for the exposition and defense of the Christian faith") at Oxford in 1855, was a rector in Westwell, Oxfordshire, and in Castle Camps. This gifted poet and hymn writer published Hymns for the Gospel of the Day, for Each Sunday and Festivals of Our Lord in 1860. Simon Browne

1680 - 1732 Person Name: Simon Browne (1680-1732) Scripture: John 15:26 Author of "Come, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Simon Browne was born at Shepton Mallet, Somersetshire, about 1680. He began to preach as an "Independent" before he was twenty years of age, and was soon after settled at Portsmouth. In 1716, he became pastor in London. In 1723, he met with some misfortunes, which preyed upon his mind, and produced that singular case of monomania, recorded in the text-books of Mental Philosophy; he thought that God had "annihilated in him the thinking substance, and utterly divested him of consciousness." "Notwithstanding," says Toplady, "instead of having no soul, he wrote, reasoned, and prayed as if he had two." He died in 1732. His publications number twenty-three, of which some are still in repute. --Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, M.A., 1872. ================== Browne, Simon. A contemporary of Dr. Watts, born at Shepton Mallet, Somersetshire, cir. 1680, and died in 1732. After studying for the Independent Ministry under the Rev. John Moore, of Bridgewater, he became pastor of an Independent charge in Portsmouth, and then, in 1716, of the Independent-Chapel in Old Jewry, London. His lateryears were clouded by a peculiar malady, under the influence of which "he imagined that God had in a gradual manner annihilated in him the thinking substance, and utterly divested him of consciousness." It is supposed that the death of a highwayman at his hands during a violent struggle, followed by that of his wife and son a short time after, had much to do in producing this sad result. Whilst thus contending that he had no power to think, he produced a work in defence of Christianity, another in defence of the Trinity, a third as an Exposition of the 1st Epistle to the Corinthians, and a fourth in the form of a Dictionary. His publications number over 20. Of these works, he is known to hymnology through his:— Hymns and Spiritual Songs, in Three Books, designed as a Supplement to Dr. Watts, &c, 1720, 2nd edition 1741, 3rd edition 1760. It contains 166 hymns, 7 doxologies, and a Preface of some historical interest. In the old collections Simon Browne's hymns (all of which are from the above collection) held a prominent position, but in modern hymnals they are fast passing out of use. The best known and most widely used are "Come, Holy [gracious] Spirit, Heavenly Dove," "O God, on Thee we all depend," and "Lord, at Thy feet we sinners lie." In addition the following are also in common use:— 1. Eternal God, Almighty Cause. Unity of God. 2. Eternal God, of beings First. God all in all . 3. Frequent the day of God returns. Sunday. 4. John Bacchus Dykes

1823 - 1876 Person Name: J. B. Dykes Scripture: John 15:26 Composer of "ST. CUTHBERT" in The Presbyterian Book of Praise As a young child John Bacchus Dykes (b. Kingston-upon-Hull' England, 1823; d. Ticehurst, Sussex, England, 1876) took violin and piano lessons. At the age of ten he became the organist of St. John's in Hull, where his grandfather was vicar. After receiving a classics degree from St. Catherine College, Cambridge, England, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1847. In 1849 he became the precentor and choir director at Durham Cathedral, where he introduced reforms in the choir by insisting on consistent attendance, increasing rehearsals, and initiating music festivals. He served the parish of St. Oswald in Durham from 1862 until the year of his death. To the chagrin of his bishop, Dykes favored the high church practices associated with the Oxford Movement (choir robes, incense, and the like). A number of his three hundred hymn tunes are still respected as durable examples of Victorian hymnody. Most of his tunes were first published in Chope's Congregational Hymn and Tune Book (1857) and in early editions of the famous British hymnal, Hymns Ancient and Modern. Bert Polman

Healey Willan

1880 - 1968 Person Name: Healey Willan, 1880-1968 Scripture: John 15:26-27, 16:1-15 Harmonizer of "VENI CREATOR SPIRITUS (1)" in Common Praise (1998) Healey Willan (b. Balham, London, England, October 12, 1880; d. Toronto, Ontario, February 16, 1968), theory teacher, composer and organist, was born into an Anglo-Catholic family in England and served several churches in the London area, becoming known especially for his adaptations of Gregorian chant to be able to be sung in English translation. In 1913 he moved to Canada where he led the theory department and was organist at the Toronto Conservatory of Music. He also was organist at St. Paul’s, Canada’s largest Anglican church, and after 1921 at the smaller Church of St. Mary Magdalene. By invitation, he composed an anthem for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, a singular honor for one not residing in England. Emily Brink

Catherine Winkworth

1827 - 1878 Person Name: Catherine Winkworth, 1827-78 Scripture: John 15:26-27 Translator of "Blessèd Jesus, at your word" in Together in Song Catherine Winkworth (b. Holborn, London, England, 1827; d. Monnetier, Savoy, France, 1878) is well known for her English translations of German hymns; her translations were polished and yet remained close to the original. Educated initially by her mother, she lived with relatives in Dresden, Germany, in 1845, where she acquired her knowledge of German and interest in German hymnody. After residing near Manchester until 1862, she moved to Clifton, near Bristol. A pioneer in promoting women's rights, Winkworth put much of her energy into the encouragement of higher education for women. She translated a large number of German hymn texts from hymnals owned by a friend, Baron Bunsen. Though often altered, these translations continue to be used in many modern hymnals. Her work was published in two series of Lyra Germanica (1855, 1858) and in The Chorale Book for England (1863), which included the appropriate German tune with each text as provided by Sterndale Bennett and Otto Goldschmidt. Winkworth also translated biographies of German Christians who promoted ministries to the poor and sick and compiled a handbook of biographies of German hymn authors, Christian Singers of Germany (1869). Bert Polman ======================== Winkworth, Catherine, daughter of Henry Winkworth, of Alderley Edge, Cheshire, was born in London, Sep. 13, 1829. Most of her early life was spent in the neighbourhood of Manchester. Subsequently she removed with the family to Clifton, near Bristol. She died suddenly of heart disease, at Monnetier, in Savoy, in July, 1878. Miss Winkworth published:— Translations from the German of the Life of Pastor Fliedner, the Founder of the Sisterhood of Protestant Deaconesses at Kaiserworth, 1861; and of the Life of Amelia Sieveking, 1863. Her sympathy with practical efforts for the benefit of women, and with a pure devotional life, as seen in these translations, received from her the most practical illustration possible in the deep and active interest which she took in educational work in connection with the Clifton Association for the Higher Education of Women, and kindred societies there and elsewhere. Our interest, however, is mainly centred in her hymnological work as embodied in her:— (1) Lyra Germanica, 1st Ser., 1855. (2) Lyra Germanica, 2nd Ser., 1858. (3) The Chorale Book for England (containing translations from the German, together with music), 1863; and (4) her charming biographical work, the Christian Singers of Germany, 1869. In a sympathetic article on Miss Winkworth in the Inquirer of July 20, 1878, Dr. Martineau says:— "The translations contained in these volumes are invariably faithful, and for the most part both terse and delicate; and an admirable art is applied to the management of complex and difficult versification. They have not quite the fire of John Wesley's versions of Moravian hymns, or the wonderful fusion and reproduction of thought which may be found in Coleridge. But if less flowing they are more conscientious than either, and attain a result as poetical as severe exactitude admits, being only a little short of ‘native music'" Dr. Percival, then Principal of Clifton College, also wrote concerning her (in the Bristol Times and Mirror), in July, 1878:— "She was a person of remarkable intellectual and social gifts, and very unusual attainments; but what specially distinguished her was her combination of rare ability and great knowledge with a certain tender and sympathetic refinement which constitutes the special charm of the true womanly character." Dr. Martineau (as above) says her religious life afforded "a happy example of the piety which the Church of England discipline may implant.....The fast hold she retained of her discipleship of Christ was no example of ‘feminine simplicity,' carrying on the childish mind into maturer years, but the clear allegiance of a firm mind, familiar with the pretensions of non-Christian schools, well able to test them, and undiverted by them from her first love." Miss Winkworth, although not the earliest of modern translators from the German into English, is certainly the foremost in rank and popularity. Melody Green

b. 1946 Person Name: Melody Green (b. 1946) Scripture: John 15:26 Author of "There is a Redeemer" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Born: August 25, 1946, Hollywood, California. Melody Green is probably most loved for the songs she’s written. “There Is A Redeemer” is found in church hymn books around the world, and reports of it being sung in villages in Africa and Asia are plentiful. She has also composed many other standards including, "Make My Life A Prayer To You," “You Are The One,” Rushing Wind,” and "The Lord Is My Shepherd." Looking back, although Melody was born in Hollywood, she came into this world quietly and without fanfare. She grew up in Venice in a funky little apartment facing an alley, called Speedway. With no safe place to play, and the beach just a few hundred feet away, the sand became her only playground. As a young girl who always watched the shifting tides, the star patterns, and the sunsets, Melody realized there must be a Creator for such perpetual beauty, universal order and symmetry to exist. Her father was a WWII Navy Seals Veteran, a hunter and fisherman, and a factory worker by trade. Her mom worked at a CPA firm, and was raised in an Orthodox Jewish family, the child of Russian refugees. Melody’s grandfather was a Rabbi, her grandmother, the child of a Grand Rabbi. Escaping Czarist persecution, her grandparents bundled up their five children and took a train to the shipyard in Odessa. Melody says, “It’s a miracle I’m even alive! My family barely escaped death in Odessa, then on the train ride to the port they were ducking bullets shot at them through the windows. My precious grandparents put the kids on the floor and laid on top of them, covered with pillows for protection. They made it to the port and actually escaped on the every last ship that would allow fleeing refugees on board! My mom was their sixth child, but the very first child to be born in America.” Today Melody says, "My family history has played a large part in shaping my heart to absolutely disdain all types of persecution, prejudice, and injustice. Some things are just wrong. My spirit told me this long before I even met the Lord.” After college, Melody designed clothing in the famed Garment District of Los Angeles. Later she took a job at a Production Company. It was there that she met Keith Green, an aspiring musician who was on a very similar spiritual journey. Within a year they were married and continued their spiritual search together. Now Melody designed and made unique clothing for herself and Keith for his nightclub gigs in Hollywood and his record label auditions. In 1975 they were invited to a small bible study in upscale Bel Air and their lives were forever changed. Melody finally found the truth she’d been looking for, but in an unexpected package. However, both Melody and Keith understood that in Jesus they had found their one and only true Messiah. Calling herself a Jewish Christian, Melody decided to just do what the bible said. So she and Keith opened the doors of their small home and took in kids with drug problems and surprise pregnancies, usually leading them to the Lord. They also had Pot Luck dinners and bible studies for their whole neighborhood... going door to door to invite people. Before long more space was needed, so they bought or rented a total of six more homes, built triple high bunks, ate donated mystery food (cans without labels) and just kept on growing. In 1979, feeling a need to leave "the city'" because of the rehab work they were doing, they moved their flourishing ministry to a 120-acre ranch in East Texas. Melody still traveled on Keith's concert tours where she ran the soundboard, sold albums, and as always, she and Keith wrote music wherever they could. Back at the ranch she oversaw the “women’s ministries,” wrote hundreds of counseling letters, and took care of her young and growing family. By 1982 the ministry had a worldwide impact, with nearly 100 people on staff. Melody was busy editing The Last Days Magazine, as well as writing many of its articles. Keith’s music was at the top of the charts and new facilities were built and more were in the planning stages. Then one day in July a tragic accident changed Melody’s life forever. Keith and two of their young children, with some visiting friends, went for a short ride in a small plane. It was the LDM weekly fast day, and the ministry pilot had just returned. Keith met the pilot on the runway and everyone jumped into the plane. But the plane did not get the needed lift, and just 20 seconds later it crashed in a neighboring field and burst into flames. There were no survivors. When Keith died he was just 28 years old. Melody's first born, Josiah, was almost four and Bethany was two years old. At the time, Melody was at home with their one year old daughter Rebekah Joy and six weeks pregnant with their fourth child. Melody says, “The rug was yanked out from under my whole world that day. Without the Lord and the support of my friends and the LDM community I never would have made it.” But she did make it, pressing in to lead LDM through the crisis, while caring for her surviving daughter. In the fall of 1982 Melody traveled across America with the Keith Green Memorial Concert, reaching over 300,000 people face to face. Since the mission field was the last burden she and Keith shared, she was the one left to carry that challenge. Loren Cunningham, the founder of Youth With A Mission said, "This was the largest missions challenge in history that I know of." In March of 1983 Melody took some time off to give birth to her new daughter, Rachel Hope. Now Melody was a single mom with two little girls... and leading a large international ministry. It was at a time when women leaders were few and not readily accepted, but the Lord gave Melody great favor and continued to use both her and LDM in incredible ways. In 1985 Melody became a forerunner in the tiny but budding Pro Life Movement. She says. "The Lord told me to move abortion up to the front burner," and of course she took all of LDM with her. She launched Americans Against Abortion at a time when pastors rarely mentioned abortion or felt believers should even address it. But Melody put a fresh face and a non-stoppable energy into being Pro-Life... and she drove the message home, squarely into millions of evangelical hearts. In this season Melody crossed the nation teaching the biblical perspective on caring for Life, and urging all believers to take a determined stand. Supporting only non-violent means, and wearing a bullet proof vest because of death threats, Melody spoke in churches, held rallies on Capital steps, called secular press conferences, led city wide marches, and picketed abortion clinics. She was even arrested once during a peaceful protest, spending the night in an inner city jail and going home with a head injury. In the following years God opened many unforeseen doors for Melody. She went to India and met Mother Theresa visiting her “Home For The Destitute and Dying.” She was also invited to the White House to meet with Presidents, Senators, and others in political office. None of it really phased her. She likes to say, "I sat in dirt in India and wore silk to the White House. How weird is that?" Today Melody still oversees LDM where her voice can be heard on numerous relevant topics from a biblical perspective. Loving to expose people to what she believes is important, she continues to bring LDM readers the teachings of others who she believes have something vital to say. Believing that caring for others is not an option, Melody established the Good Neighbor Mercy Fund, enabling LDM to raise donations for disaster victims, the sick, and the needy. LDM has already given to victims of the Asian Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina as well as others with pressing needs. Melody lives in Kansas City, Missouri. Served as a Navy chaplain during World War II; acted as editor-in-chief of Ryerson Press (Toronto), 1959-1963; taught church history at Pine Hill Divinity School (Halifax), 1948-1949; Union College (Vancouver), 1949-1957; in South India, 1958-1959; and at Emmanuel College (Toronto), 1963-?. He published many books and articles in his field of specialty, notably The church in the Canadian era (1972). Richard Hillert

1923 - 2010 Person Name: Richard Hillert, b. 1923 Scripture: John 15 Harmonizer of "BEATUS VIR" in Gather Comprehensive Richard Hillert was born in Granton, Clark County, Wis., on March 14, 1923. There he attended parochial and public schools and later enrolled at Concordia Teachers College (now Concordia University Chicago), River Forest, where he received the Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He served as teacher and music director for parishes in St. Louis, Mo., Wausau, Wis., and Chicago and Westchester, Ill. He received both the Master of Music and the Doctor of Music degrees in composition from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. His teachers included Matthew Nathaniel Lundquist, Anthony Donato, Alan Stout, Arrand Parsons, Emil Nolte, and John Ohl. He studied composition with the Italian composer, Goffredo Petrassi, at Aaron Copland’s Berkshire Music Center, Tanglewood, Mass. Richard Hillert was a noted Lutheran composer. He was Distinguished Professor of Music Emeritus at Concordia University Chicago, River Forest, Ill. He was best known for his work as a composer and teacher of composition. Among his most frequently performed liturgical works for congregation is Worthy Is Christ, with its antiphon, “This is the Feast of Victory” which was written as an alternate Song of Praise for inclusion in Setting One of the Holy Communion in Lutheran Book of Worship (1978) and Lutheran Worship (1982). "This is the Feast" is now widely published in more than 20 recent worship books of many denominations, most recently in Lutheran Service Book (2006) and Evangelical Lutheran Worship (2006). Other major liturgical works include a setting of Evening Prayer (1984) and a Eucharistic Festival Liturgy (1983), which was first performed at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. He wrote liturgical pieces and hymns and served as music editor for Worship Supplement(1969) and Lutheran Book of Worship (1978). His compositions and publications include an array of pieces of liturgical music for congregation, choral motets, hymns and hymn anthems, psalm settings and organ works, concertatos, and cantatas, including settings of The Christmas Story According to Saint Luke and The Passion According to Saint John. He edited eleven volumes of the Concordia Hymn Prelude Series. Hillert's career as Professor of Music at Concordia (now Concordia University Chicago) spanned four decades, from 1959 to 1993. During this time he taught classes in music theory and composition, music literature, 20th century music, orchestration, keyboard instruction, comparative arts and liturgical worship. He served in various capacities in the music department, as chair in 1964-65 and from 1986–89, as coordinator of the Master of Church Music program, and as associate editor of the journal Church Music (1966–80). Non-liturgical compositions include symphonic works for orchestra (Symphony in Three Movements, Variations for Orchestra, Suite for Strings), chamber works for small orchestra and ensembles (Alternations for Seven Instruments, Divertimento I and II) as well as many works for keyboard, instrumental solos and songs. The latter include Sonata for Piano (1961), a violin sonata, and two sonatas for flute and keyboard. Major organ works include Prelude and Toccata, Ricercata, Passacaglia on Innocent Sounds, Partita on Picardy, and Partita on Atkinson. There are also concert works with sacred texts, such as Five Canticles from the Exodus (1958), Te Deum for two pianos, percussion, and wind instruments (1962), The Alleluiatic Sequence (1980), and Seven Psalms of Grace for baritone solo and chamber orchestra (1998). Extended choral works, many written for Concordia’s Kapelle conducted by Thomas Gieschen, include the Cantata: "May God Bestow on Us His Grace" (1964), "Motet for the Day of Pentecost" for choir, vibraphone, and prepared electronic tape (written for the round-the-world tour in 1969), "Motet for the Time of Easter" for double choir, percussion, and harp (1971), and "Agnus Dei" for three choirs and percussion instruments (1974). Richard Hillert authored numerous scholarly articles and reviews for the periodicals such as Church Music, CrossAccent, and Currents in Theology and Mission, and other professional books and journals. He received an honorary Doctor of Sacred Music degree from Valparaiso University, and honorary Doctor of Letters degrees from Concordia University at Seward, Nebraska, and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. He was an honorary life member of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. His former students throughout the land have careers as practicing church musicians, elementary and secondary school teachers, teachers in higher education, music editors and publishers, and composers.
