George Kingsley

1811 - 1884 Person Name: G. Kingsley Composer of "HEBER" in Songs for the Service of Prayer Born: July 7, 1811, Northampton, Massachusetts. Died: March 14, 1884, Northampton, Massachusetts. Kingsley played the organ at the Old South Church and Hollis Street Church in Boston, Massachusetts. He also taught music at Girard College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, served as music supervisor for public schools in Philadelphia, and compiled a number of music books, including: Sunday School Singing Book, 1832 The Harmonist, 1833 The Social Choir, 1836 The Sacred Choir, 1838 The Harp of David, 1844 The Young Ladies’ Harp, 1847 Templi Carmina (Northampton, Massachusetts: 1853) The Juvenile Choir, 1865 --www.hymntime.com/tch

John E. Gould

1821 - 1875 Composer of "BERA" in Hymns, Psalms and Gospel Songs John Edgar Gould USA 1821-1875. Born in Bangor, ME, he became a musician. He managed music stores in New York City and Philadelphia, PA., the latter with composer partner, William Fischer. He married Josephine Louisa Barrows, and they had seven children: Blanche, Marie, Ida, John, Josephine, Josephine, and Augusta. He compiled eight religious songbooks from 1846 thru 1869. He died while traveling in Algiers, Africa, and was buried in Philadelphia, PA. John Perry

Thoro Harris

1874 - 1955 Harmonizer of "INVITAITON HYMN" in The Wesleyan Methodist Hymnal Born: March 31, 1874, Washington, DC. Died: March 27, 1955, Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Buried: International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, Eureka Springs, Arkansas. After attending college in Battle Creek, Michigan, Harris produced his first hymnal in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1902. He then moved to Chicago, Illinois at the invitation of Peter Bilhorn, and in 1932, to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He composed and compiled a number of works, and was well known locally as he walked around with a canvas bag full of handbooks for sale. His works include: Light and Life Songs, with William Olmstead & William Kirkpatrick (Chicago, Illinois: S. K. J. Chesbro, 1904) Little Branches, with George J. Meyer & Howard E. Henry Baker

1835 - 1910 Person Name: Henry Baker, 1835-1910 Composer of "HESPERUS" in Methodist Hymn and Tune Book Henry Baker, Mus. Bac., son of the Rev. James Baker, Chancellor of the diocese of Durham; born at Nuneham, Oxfordshire; educated at Winchester School; graduated Bachelor in Music at the University of Oxford in 1867. R. E. Hudson

1843 - 1901 Composer of "[Come, sinners, to the Gospel feast]" in Quartette Ralph Hudson (1843-1901) was born in Napoleon, OH. He served in the Union Army in the Civil War. After teaching for five years at Mt. Union College in Alliance he established his own publishing company in that city. He was a strong prohibitionist and published The Temperance Songster in 1886. He compiled several other collections and supplied tunes for gospel songs, among them Clara Tear Williams' "All my life long I had panted" (Satisfied). See 101 More Hymn Stories, K. Lewis Edson

1748 - 1820 Person Name: L. Edson Composer of "BRIDGEWATER" in The New Jubilee Harp Lewis EdsonBorn in Massachusetts,he began working as a blacksmith and farmer. After marrying, he became a singing teacher, notable in his day. He taught singing in MA NY and CN, moving to NY in 1817. He was also an author. His 35 works consist of tunebooks, anthems, Psalm music, music scores and chants for choir use. John Perry

Mrs. C. H. Morris

1862 - 1929 Person Name: L. N. M. Author (Chorus) of "Jesus is Waiting to be Gracious" in Songs of Love and Praise No. 4 Lelia (Mrs. C.H.) Morris (1862-1929) was born in Pennsville, Morgan County, Ohio. When her family moved to Malta on the Muskingum River she and her sister and mother had a millinery shop in McConnelsville. She and her husband Charles H. Morris were active in the Methodist Episcopal Church and at the camp meetings in Sebring and Mt. Vernon. She wrote hymns as she did her housework. Although she became blind at age 52 she continued to write hymns on a 28-foot long blackboard that her family had built for her. She is said to have written 1000 texts and many tunes including "Sweeter as the years go by." Mary Louise VanDyke

George Coles

1792 - 1858 Composer of "DUANE ST." in The Primitive Methodist Church Hymnal Rv George Coles United Kingdom 1792-1858. Born at Stewkley, England, he was converted at age 13 under John Wesley's ministry. He began preaching at age 22 and emigrated to America in 1818. He was a Methodist supply preacher on the Long Island circuit in NY and CT. The following year he became a member of the NY Conference and served several of the larger churches for several years. He married Belinda Wilson in 1820, and they had five children. They lived in several towns in NY during their lives. He served as editor of the “Christian Advocate and Journal” for 12 years, and the “Sunday School Advocate” for several years thereafter. He was a musician of some ability, and a good singer. He loved talking with children and often drew them around him. He authored “A concordance of the Holy Scriptures”, “Heroinces of Methodism”, and fiour other books. He died and is buried in Somers, NY. He kept journals, covering 50 years of activities. John Perry

W. S. Weeden

1847 - 1908 Arranger of "[Come, sinners, to the gospel feast]" in Songs of the Peacemaker Winfield S. Weeden was born in 1847 in Middleport, OH. In his early life he was active in teaching singing schools throughout that area in Ohio. As singer and associate to Judson VandeVenter in his evangelistic campaigns, Weeden assisted in meetings at East Palestine and Sebring. He compiled several collections of hymns among them The Peacemaker, Songs of the Peacemaker, and Songs of Sovereign Grace. Weeden died in 1908.
