I Love to Tell the Story

Author: Katherine Hankey Meter: 7.6.7.6 D with refrain Appears in 1,256 hymnals Topics: Lent 1 Year C Lyrics: 1 I love to tell the story of unseen things above, of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love. I love to tell the story because I know 'tis true; it satisfies my longings as nothing else can do. [Refrain:] I love to tell the story, 'twill be my theme in glory, to tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love. 2 I love to tell the story more wonderful it seems than all the golden fancies of all our golden dreams. I love to tell the story, for some have never heard the message of salvation from God's own holy Word. [Refrain] 3 I love to tell the story, for those who know it best seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest. And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song, 'twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long. [Refrain] Used With Tune: HANKEY

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Author: Martin Luther, 1483-1546 Meter: 8.7.8.7.5.5.5.6.7 Appears in 691 hymnals Topics: Lent 1 Lyrics: 1 A mighty Fortress is our God, A trusty Shield and Weapon; He helps us free from ev'ry need That hath us now o'ertaken. The old evil foe Now means deadly woe; Deep guile and great might Are his dread arms in fight; On earth is not his equal. 2 With might of ours can naught be done, Soon were our loss effected; But for us fights the Valiant One, Whom God Himself elected. Ask ye, Who is this? Jesus Christ it is. Of Sabaoth Lord, And there's none other God; He holds the field forever. 3 Though devils all the world should fill, All eager to devour us. We tremble not, we fear no ill, They shall not overpow'r us. This world's prince may still Scowl fierce as he will, He can harm us none, He's judged; the deed is done; One little word can fell him. 4 The Word they still shall let remain Nor any thanks have for it; He's by our side upon the plain With His good gifts and Spirit. And take they our life, Goods, fame, child, and wife, Let these all be gone, They yet have nothing won; The Kingdom ours remaineth. Scripture: Psalm 46 Used With Tune: EIN FESTE BURG Text Sources: Tr. composite

Tænk, hvilken Skam og Last Sin Gud at svige!

Naar man er bleven Til Herren ret omvendt, Fra Verden reven, Med Jesu ret bekjendt, I Himlen skreven Med Lammets røde Prent!

Now, my tongue, the mystery telling

Author: St Thomas Aquinas, 1227-1274; John Mason Neale, 1818-1866; Edward Caswall 1814-1878 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 55 hymnals Topics: Year A Lent 1 Lyrics: 1 Now, my tongue, the myst'ry telling of the glorious body sing, and the blood, all price excelling, which the Gentiles' Lord and King, in a virgin's womb once dwelling, shed for this world's ransoming. 2 Giv'n for us, for us descending of a virgin to proceed, he, with us in converse blending, scattered here the gospel seed, till his sojourn drew to ending, which he closed with wondrous deed. 3 At the last great supper lying, circled by his chosen hand, meekly with the law complying, first he finished its command. Then, immortal food supplying, gave himself with his own hand. 4 Word made flesh, by word he maketh very bread his flesh to be; we in wine, Christ's blood partaketh, and if senses fail to see, faith alone the true heart taketh, to behold the mystery. 5 Therefore we, before him bending, this great sacrament revere: types and shadows have their ending, for the newer rite is here; faith, our outward sense befriending, makes our inward vision clear. 6 Glory let us give and blessing to the Father and the Son, honour, might and praise addressing, while eternal ages run; ever too his love confessing, who, from both, with both is One. Amen. Scripture: 1 Peter 1:19 Used With Tune: TANTUM ERGO (GRAFTON)
