Lucius Chapin

1760 - 1842 Hymnal Number: 139 Composer (attributed to) of "TWENTY-FOURTH" in Discipleship Ministries Collection Lucius Chapin, 1760-1842 Born: April 25, 1760, Longmeadow (near Springfield), Massachusetts. Died: December 24, 1842, Hamilton County, Ohio. Buried: Originally at Walnut Hills Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1842. Reinterred at Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio, January 26, 1858. Lucius’ brother was Amzi Chapin. In 1775, Lucius joined the Continental Army in Boston as a fifer; re-enlisting in 1776, he served at the Battles of Ticonderoga and Stillwater, and endured the infamous winter of 1777-8 at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, with George Washington. After the war, he conducted singing schools in Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, and in 1787 moved to Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, later teaching in Rocbridge, Augusta and Rockingham Counties. Around 1797, he moved to Vernon, Kentucky. He retired in 1835 and moved to Hamilton County, Ohio. --www.hymntime.com/tch/

Franklin L. Sheppard

1852 - 1930 Hymnal Number: 156 Adapter of "TERRA BEATA" in Discipleship Ministries Collection Franklin L. Sheppard (b. Philadelphia, PA, 1852; d. Germantown, PA, 1930) arranged the tune for Babcock's text and published it in the Presbyterian church school hymnal Alleluia (1915), edited by Sheppard (Babcock and Sheppard were friends). After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Sheppard entered the family foundry business in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1875. He was organist at Zion Episcopal Church and later was an elder and music director of the Second Presbyterian Church in Baltimore. President of the Presbyterian Board of Publications, Sheppard also served on the committee that prepared the Presbyterian Hymnal of 1911. In the history of hymnody he is remembered primarily for arranging the tune TERRA BEATA for “This Is My Father's World.” Bert Polman

Johann Rudolf Ahle

1625 - 1673 Person Name: Johann R. Ahle Hymnal Number: 38 Composer of "LIEBSTER JESULEIN" in Discipleship Ministries Collection Johann Rudolph Ahle, b. Mühlhausen, 1625; Ahle studied theology at Erfurt University. Little is known about his musical education, but be became well known as an organist while he was in Erfurt. He returned to Mühlhausen and became an organist at St. Blasius Church, he composed organ music but is know for his sacred choral music. He was the father of Johann Georg, who was also a composer and succeeded his father as organist at St. Blasius Church. Joseph Francis Thrupp

1827 - 1867 Person Name: Joseph Francis Thrupp, 1827-1867 Hymnal Number: 31 Arranger of "EPIPHANY HYMN" in Discipleship Ministries Collection Thrupp, Joseph. Francis, M.A., son of a solicitor, was born May 20,1827, and educated at Winchester School and Trinity College, Cambridge. At Winchester he gained the Heathcote and Duncan prizes, and the Queen's gold medal for an English poem, and was Head Prefect during his last year. He graduated in 1849 as 7th Wrangler, and 11th in the 1st class of the Classical Tripos. In 1850 he was elected a Fellow of his college. Taking Holy Orders in 1852, he was appointed Vicar of Barrington, Cambridge, in 1852, and Select Preacher before the University in 1865. He was also for some time a member of the Board of Theological Studies, and was associated with the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge some 20 years. He died at Surbiton, Sept. 24, 1867. His published works include An Introduction to the Study and the Use of the Psalms; A Revised Translation of the Song of Songs; Ancient Jerusalem; and Psalms and Hymns (Cambridge, Macmillan), 1853. This last contains prefaces, indices, with authors’ names, 93 psalms, 236 hymns, 16 doxologies. Of these 28 psalms and 18 hymns are by Mr. Thrupp. The best known of his hymns are, "Awhile in spirit, Lord, to Thee"; "Hail, that head, all torn and wounded"; "O Son of Man, Thyself once crossed." Mr. Thrupp's versions of individual psalms have not come into common use beyond his own collection. They are therein signed with his initials, "J. F.T.," but are not separately annotated in this Dictionary. His hymns are mainly on the special Festivals of the Church, and, in addition to those annotated elsewhere are:— 1.
