Anna Shipton

1815 - 1901 Hymnal Number: d159 Author of "Sow ye beside all waters" in Calvary Songs for Sunday School & Families. Words ed. Anna Savage Shipton United Kingdom 1815-1901. Born at Evesham, Wychavon, Worcester, England, she was the daughter of Evesham solicitor, Edward Savage. She inherited land from her father when he died in 1839 (her mother had died in 1817, and her brother had emigrated to Australia), and rented out some of the land. She married Joseph Shipton in 1848, but separated in 1852, allegedly due to his infidelity. Her estranged husband died in 1860. She traveled extensively and continued writing poetry and essays. She wrote 20+ religious books, and many leaflets, mostly religious. Among her books the following: a hymns and meditations book entitled, “Whispers in the palms. Hymns and meditations” (1855); Precious gems for the Savior’s diadems” (1862); “The brook in the way-original hymns” (1864); “Tell Jesus- Recollections of E Gosse”; “The cottage on the hock-an allegory”. After living in mainland Europe from the mid-1860s to the 1880s, she returned to the UK and settled in Sussex, then in St Leonard’s on the Sea, East Sussex, England, where she eventually died. Yapp, 1855; second edition, augmented, 1857. (2) Precious Gems for the Saviour's Diadem, 1862. (3) The Brook in the Way; Original Hymns, 1864. (4) Tell Jesus: Recollections of E. Gosse. (5) The Cottage on The Hock, an Allegory. Also other smaller books. Her hymns in common use include:— i. From her Whispers in the Palms, 1855-57. 1. Down in the pleasant pastures. Anne Houlditch Shepherd

1809 - 1857 Hymnal Number: d9 Author of "Singing glory, glory" in Calvary Songs for Sunday School & Families. Words ed. Shepherd, Anne, née Houlditch, daughter of the Rev. E. H. Houlditch, sometime Rector of Speen, Berkshire, was born at Cowes, Isle of Wight, Sept. 11, 1809; married to Mr. S. Saville Shepherd in 1843; and died at Blackheath, Kent, Jan. 7, 1857. Her Hymns adapted to the Comprehension of Young Minds were published (3rd ed. 1847 5th ed. 1855), and contained 64 hymns. Of these the following have come into common use:— 1. Around the throne of God in heaven. 2. Glory to Jesus, glory. Praise. 3. Here's a message of love. Invitation. 4. I have read of the Saviour's love. The Love of Christ. 5. See where the gentle Jesus reigns. Jesus, the Children's Friend. Of these hymns the first has by far the widest acceptance, and is found in a large number of children's hymn-books. Urania Locke Bailey [Una Locke] was born on November 20, 1820 in Gill, Massachusetts and died on March 25, 1882. George Gill

1820 - 1880 Hymnal Number: d176 Author of "Nearer my home, nearer my home" in Calvary Songs for Sunday School & Families. Words ed. Gill, George, son of William Gill, was born at Tiverton, Devonshire, Jan. 23, 1820, and was for some time a missionary in the South Sea Islands. His hymn, "Beautiful Zion, built above " (Heaven), was "written" the author says, "on the island of Mangaia, South Seas, April, 1850." It was printed in the Juvenile Missionary Magazine in 1852. His re-written form of Phoebe Cary’s “One Sweetly Solemn Thought” beginning “this sweetly solemn thought” is dated 1861 and also appeared in the Juvenile Missionary Magazine, Gill left the South Sea in 1860, and in 1861 became pastor of Wesgate Congregational Chapel, Burnley. Margaret Cockburn-Campbell

1808 - 1841 Person Name: Margaret C. M. Campbell Hymnal Number: d139 Author of "Praise God the Father" in Calvary Songs for Sunday School & Families. Words ed. Campbell, Margaret, Lady Cockburn, née Malcolm, eldest daughter of Sir John Malcolm, G.C.B., married, June 20, 1827, to Sir Alexander Thomas Cockburn-Campbell, Bart, (one of the founders of the Plymouth Brethren in England), and died at Alphington, near Exeter, Feb. 6, 1811. Her hymns were printed in lithograph from her manuscript for private circulation. In the Plymouth Brethren Psalms & Hymns, Lond., Walther, 1842, some of these hymns were given, and thus came into common use. The best known is, "Praise ye Jehovah, praise the Lord most holy." --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)
