Margaret Mackay

1802 - 1887 Hymnal Number: d17 Author of "Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep" in The Pilot Mackay, Margaret, was born in 1802, and the only daughter of Captain Robert Mackay, of Hedgefield, Inverness. She was married in 1820 to Major William Mackay, of the 68th Light Infantry (afterwards Lt. Colonel) a distinguished officer who died in 1845. Mrs. Mackay died at Cheltenham, Jan. 5, 1887. In addition to various prose works Mrs. Mackay published Thoughts Redeemed; or Lays of Leisure Hours, 1854, which contained 72 original hymns and poems. [Rev. Jefferson Hascall

1807 - 1887 Hymnal Number: d130 Author of "O come, angel band" in The Pilot Rv Jefferson Hascall USA 1807-1887. Born in Thompson, CT, he studied at Wilbraham Academy was ordained into the Methodist Church in 1829. He later became a minister and presiding elder over the Worcester Conference. He twice represented New England in the church's General Conference. He was considered an eloquent and powerful speaker and was considered responsible for the conversion over 150 people. Notice of his preaching engagements would fill the seats. He lived in Shrewsbury, MA, about 20 years and was also a public-spirited citizen and was universally respected. He favored education and the suppression of slavery. He married Julia Catherine Griswold in 1832, and after her death in 1842, Lavina Livermore in 1843, and they had seven children: Stephen, Julia, Martha, Henry, Emily, Wilbur, and Lee. Samuel O'Malley Cluff

1837 - 1910 Person Name: Samuel O. Clouph Hymnal Number: d70 Author of "I'm praying for you" in The Pilot Rv Samuel O'Malley Gore Cluff (Clough) United Kingdom 1837-1910. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he attended Trinity College and became a minister in the (Anglican) Church of Ireland. He pastored at various locations in Ireland. In 1884 he became leader of the Plymouth Brethren. He married Anne Blake Edge. They had four children. He wrote hymn poems and about 1000 songs. He composed many melodies and oratories. He died in Abbeyleix, Ireland. While holding crusades in Scotland with D. L. Moody, Ira Sankey came across Cluff's poem about prayer and composed the music for it, used in subsequent crusades. William Ellsworth Witter

1854 - 1954 Person Name: Will E. Witter Hymnal Number: d239 Author of "Come, sinner, come" in The Pilot Witter, Will Ellsworth, was born Dec. 9, 1854, near La Grange, New York, and educated at the Genessee State Normal School, New York, and the University of Rochester. From the latter he passed in 1880 to the Rochester Baptist Theological Seminary, and in 1884 he entered the Baptist Ministry. He has written several songs and poems, one of which:— While Jesus whispers to you (The Divine Call) has come into somewhat prominent use. It was written in July 1878, and originated mainly in the great anxiety of the author respecting two of his pupils. In 1878 it was set to music by H. R. Palmer, and included in his Book of Anthems, 1878: from whence it passed into Good as Gold, and I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, London 1881. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)
