Doreen Potter

1925 - 1980 Person Name: Doreen Potter, 1925-80 Scripture: Psalm 103:20-22 Adapter of "LINSTEAD" in Lutheran Service Book Doreen Potter was born in 1925 in Panama, but lived in Jamaica during her childhood. She studied music at St. Katharine's College in Liverpool, UK and at Trinity College, London. She was a violinist, pianist, and teacher. She married Philip Potter, general secretary of the World Council of Churches in Geneva. Through her husband she met Fred Kaan and composed tunes for Kaan's texts, as well as other hymn tunes. E. L. Jorgenson

1886 - 1968 Person Name: Elmer Leon Jorgenson Scripture: Psalm 103:8-22 Paraphraser of "Thou Art Merciful, O Father" in Great Songs of the Church (Revised) Born: December 9, 1886, Nebraska. Died: December 14, 1968, at his home in Louisville, Kentucky. Buried: Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky. Jorgenson was the son of Danish immigrants. His father, Christopher Jorgenson, had been a soldier in the personal guard of the king of Denmark (probably Christian IX), and his mother a seamstress to the queen. The 1900 census shows the family living in Boone County, Nebraska. As a young man, Elmer led singing in churches in and around Albion, Nebraska, and in nearby Missouri. He was directing the music department at Western Bible and Literary College by 1908. In 1910, he and his wife Irene moved to Louisville, Kentucky. He was a member of the Churches of Christ. I. B. Woodbury

1819 - 1858 Person Name: Isaac Baker Woodbury Scripture: Psalm 103 Composer of "TALMAR" in Psalter Hymnal (Blue) Woodbury, Isaac Baker. (Beverly, Massachusetts, October 23, 1819--October 26, 1858, Columbia, South Carolina). Music editor. As a boy, he studied music in nearby Boston, then spent his nineteenth year in further study in London and Paris. He taught for six years in Boston, traveling throughout New England with the Bay State Glee Club. He later lived at Bellow Falls, Vermont, where he organized the New Hampshire and Vermont Musical Association. In 1849 he settled in New York City where he directed the music at the Rutgers Street Church until ill-health caused him to resign in 1851. He became editor of the New York Musical Review and made another trip to Europe in 1852 to collect material for the magazine. in the fall of 1858 his health broke down from overwork and he went south hoping to regain his strength, but died three days after reaching Columbia, South Carolina. He published a number of tune-books, of which the Dulcimer, of New York Collection of Sacred Music, went through a number of editions. His Elements of Musical Composition, 1844, was later issued as the Self-instructor in Musical Composition. 1875 - 1955 Person Name: Vicente Mendoza Scripture: Psalm 103 Adapter of "Bendice, Oh Alma a Tu Creador" in Himnario Bautista Vicente Mendoza Born: December 24, 1875, Guadalajara, Mexico. Died: 1955, Mexico City, Mexico. Mendoza studied initially under Don Aurelio Ortega. At age of 11 he went to work in a Protestant print shop in Mexico City and helped produce El Evangelista Mexicano (The Mexican Evangelist) for the Methodist Church of the South; he rose to become its director for 17 years. Looking to improve himself, Mendoza entered a night school for workers, but later feeling the call to preach the Gospel, he entered the Presbyterian Seminary in Mexico City. When the seminary closed temporarily, Mendoza entered the Methodist Institute of Puebla, where he finished the course in theology. In 1898 he became a member of the Annual Conference of the Mexican Methodist Church. From 1915 to 1917, he belonged to the Southern Methodist Conference of California.
