b. 1934 Person Name: Jeffery Rowthorn, b. 1934 Hymnal Number: 790 Author of "Lord, You Give the Great Commission" in Worship (4th ed.) Jeffery W. Rowthorn (b. Newport, Gwent, Wales, 1934) wrote this text in 1978 while he was Chapel Minister at Yale Divinity School, New Haven, Connecticut. The text was first published in Laudamus (1980), a hymnal supplement edited by Rowthorn and used at the Yale Divinity School. Rowthorn graduated from Cambridge and Oxford Universities, Union Theological Seminary in New York, and Cuddeson Theological College in Oxford. Ordained in 1963 in the Church of England, he served several congregations in England before immigrating to the United States, where he was chaplain at Union Theological Seminary and a faculty member in liturgics at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, which he helped to establish. He was then elected Suffragan Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut. The writer of several hymns, Rowthorn was also coeditor with Russell Schulz-Widmar of A New Hymnal for Colleges and Schools (1991). Robert Lansing Edwards

1915 - 2006 Person Name: Robert L. Edwards, 1915-2006 Hymnal Number: 805 Author of "God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending" in Worship (4th ed.) Robert Lansing Edwards was born in Auburn, NY on 5 August 1915. He graduated from Princeton University in 1937. He earned an MA in history from Harvard University in 1938, and a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological University in 1949. He was minister at First Congregational Church, Litchfield, Conn. for 7 years and was minister at Immanuel Congregational Church in Hartford, Conn. from 1956 until 1980. He was active in establishing low income senior housing, in prison ministry and with other community endeavors. He wrote several hymn texts as well as four books including Of Singular Genius, Of Singular Grace, a biography of Horace Bushnell, a famous pastor from Hartford; and his autobiography My Moment in History. William Croft

1678 - 1727 Person Name: William Croft, 1678-1727 Hymnal Number: 689 Composer (attributed to) of "ST. ANNE" in Worship (4th ed.) William Croft, Mus. Doc. was born in the year 1677 and received his musical education in the Chapel Royal, under Dr. Blow. In 1700 he was admitted a Gentleman Extraordinary of the Chapel Boyd; and in 1707, upon the decease of Jeremiah Clarke, he was appointed joint organist with his mentor, Dr. Blow. In 1709 he was elected organist of Westminster Abbey. This amiable man and excellent musician died in 1727, in the fiftieth year of his age. Melchior Teschner

1584 - 1635 Person Name: Melchior Teschner, 1584-1635 Hymnal Number: 483 Composer of "ST. THEODULPH" in Worship (4th ed.) Melchior Teschner (b. Fraustadt [now Wschowa, Poland], Silesia, 1584; d. Oberpritschen, near Fraustadt, 1635) studied philosophy, theology, and music at the University of Frankfurt an-der-Oder and later studied at the universities of Helmstedt and Wittenberg, Germany. From 1609 until 1614 he served as cantor in the Lutheran church in Fraustadt, and from 1614 until his death he was pastor of the church in Oberpritschen. Bert Polman

Jane Marshall

1924 - 2019 Person Name: Jane M. Marshall, b. 1924 Hymnal Number: 487 Arranger of "CHEREPONI" in Worship (4th ed.) Jane Marshall, was born Jane Anne Manton in Dallas in 1924. She became a pianist and organist and composed music as a teenager. She earned a music degree in 1945 from SMU. She married Elbert Marshall. She went on to write more than 200 hymns and other sacred music works. She later earned a Masters degree in 1968 from SMU in choral conducting and composition. She taught at SMU's Perkins School of Theology and tis Church Music Summer School from 1975-2010. She attended Northaven United Methodist Church in Dallas for many years, collaborated often with other hymn writers, and encouraged many students. 1883 - 1958 Person Name: George K. A. Bell, 1883-1958 Hymnal Number: 568 Author of "Christ Is the King!" in Worship (4th ed.) George Kennedy Allen Bell was born in 1883. He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. He was chaplain to the archbishop of Canterbury in 1914, was appointed as Dean of Canterbury in 1924 and became the Anglican bishop at Chichester in 1929. He was interested in ecumenism and friendship between the Anglican Church and churches in other countries and was instrumental in starting the World Council of Churches.
