H. L. Gilmour

1836 - 1920 Scripture: Philippians 3:8 Author of "Ya Todo Dejé" in Himnos de Gloria Henry Lake Gilmour United Kingdom 1836-1920. Born at Londonderry, Ireland, he emigrated to America as a teenager, thinking he wanted to learn navigation. When he reached the U.S., he arrived in Philadelphia and decided to seek his fortune in America. He started working as a painter, then served in the American Civil War, where he was captured and spent several months in Libby Prison, Richmond, VA. He married Letitia Pauline Howard in 1858. After the war he trained as a dentist and did that for many years. In 1869 he moved to Wenonah, NJ, and helped found the Methodist church there in 1885. He served as Sunday school superintendent and, for four decades, directed the choir at the Pittman Grove Camp Meeting, also working as song leader at camp meetings in Mountain Lake Park, MD, and Ridgeview Park, PA. He was an editor, author, and composer. He edited and/or published 25 gospel song books, along with John Sweney, J Lincoln Hall, John J Hood, Howard Entwistle, Joshua Gill, E L Hyde, Milton S Rees and William J Kirkpatrick. Oscar Ahnfelt

1813 - 1882 Person Name: Oscar Ahnfelt, 1813-1882 Scripture: Philippians 3:13-14 Composer of "O SÅLLA LAND" in The Covenant Hymnal Oscar Ahnfelt (1813 -1882) was a Swedish singer and composer. He wrote the music for many of Lina Sandell’s hymns. A pietist, he raised some concern in the State-church, but his music was apparently so popular, King Karl XV gave him permission to play and sing in both of his kingdoms. Ahnfelt’s music has spread throughout the world; two of his best-known songs are “Children of the Heavenly Father” and “Day by Day.” Laura de Jong

Emanuel Christian Gottlob Langbecker

1792 - 1843 Person Name: E. C. Langbecker Scripture: Philippians 3:20 Author of "Sammle, gemeinde des Herrn" in Deutsches Gesangbuch für die Evangelisch-Luterische Kirche in den Vereinigten Staaten Langbecker, Emanuel Christian Gottlieb, son of Christian Gottlieb Langbecker, clothier in his father's business, he entered the service of Prince Waldemar of Prussia in 1827, becoming his household secretary in 1840. He died at Berlin, Oct. 24, 1843 (Koch, vii. 39-42; Registers of St. George's Church, Berlin, &c). His hymns appeared in the Berlin Wochenblatt, 1822, &c.; in his Gedichte, Berlin, 1824, 2nd Series, 1829; and in the Berlin G. L. S., of which he was the principal editor, and for which he compiled the biographical notices in the 1st edition, 1832. He also published various hymnological works, including his historical sketch Das deutsch - evangelische Kirchenlied, Berlin, 1830; the first critical edition of P. Gerhardt's Leben und Lieder, Berlin, 1841; Gesang-Blätter aus dem xvi. Jahrhundert, Berlin, 1838, &c. One of his hymns is in English common use:— Wie wird mir sein, wann ich dich, Jesus, sehe. Longing for Heaven. Founded on 1 John iii. 2. In his Gedichte, Zweite Sammlung, Berlin, 1829, p. 65, in 5 stanzas of 6 lines, entitled, "In prospect of Eternity." It was a favourite hymn of C. H. Zeller (q.v.) Included in the Berlin Geistliche L. S., 1832, No. 1922 (1863, No. 722). The translation is:— What shall I be! my Lord, when I behold thee. A full and good translation by Mrs. Findlater, in Hymns from the Land of Luther, 2nd Ser., 1855, p. 56 (1884, p. 114). Repeated, in full, in Bp. A. Royce Eckhardt

b. 1937 Scripture: Philippians 3 Composer of "RICHMOND BEACH" in Scripture Song Database Royce Eckhardt has served as a director of music, organist, conductor, composer, arranger, hymnal editor, teacher, and hymnologist for over fifty years. He has served Evangelical Covenant churches as minister of music and organist in Seattle, New Britain (CT), Winnetka, and Hinsdale, Illinois, and also the Winnetka Presbyterian Church. Mr. Eckhardt earned a Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance in 1960 from North Park College, Chicago, and a Master of Music degree in liturgical music at Hartt College of Music, University of Hartford in 1972. Royce joined the music faculty at Seattle Pacific College in 1961, teaching organ, music theory and literature courses and directing small choral ensembles. He served as adjunct professor of church music at North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago, specializing in hymnology and also serving as chapel organist. Mr. Eckhardt was a member of the Covenant Hymnal Commission that produced The Covenant Hymnal (1973). In 1990 he was appointed to the Special Hymnal Commission that compiled and published The Covenant Hymnal: A Worshipbook (1996), serving as music editor. He is represented in the hymnal with 47 arrangements, original tunes, and descants. His many hymn arrangements, harmonizations and tunes appear in eight American hymnals. Royce also served as music director of the Covenant Ministers Chorus from 1985 to 2005, leading the Chorus on a concert tour to Sweden and Germany in 1990 and on a second concert tour in 2001 to Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Germany. He has led many workshops and seminars throughout the country on worship and church music related topics, is a published composer of organ and choral works, a board member of North Shore American Guild of Organists, board member of The Bach Week Festival, and a member of The Hymn Society. Richard Smallwood

b. 1948 Scripture: Philippians 3:8 Author of "Center of My Joy" in African American Heritage Hymnal Richard Smallwood (b. Washington, D.C., 1948), a composer, arranger, pianist, and innovator in the African American gospel style. Many of his arrangements of gospel hymns appear in Lift Every Voice and Sing (1981). Organized by Smallwood in 1967, the Richard Smallwood Singers have sung and recorded many of his arrangements. He remains their current director. John Bunyan

This great allegorist cannot be included amongst hymn writers, except on the ground that the piece, “He that is down needs fear no fall," from pt. ii. of his Pilgrim's Progress, 1684, is given in a limited number of hymnals. Another piece by him is "Valiant's song" in the Pilgrim's Progress, pt. ii., 1684 (2nd edition 1686, p. 177). There, and in E. P.
