1933 - 2002 Person Name: Lawrence Francis Bartlett, 1933- Scripture: Isaiah 9:2-7 Arranger of "WHEN HE COMES BACK" in Together in Song Lawrence Bartlett was born in Sydney on the February 13, 1933. He studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music between 1950 and 1957, and at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in 1960. He also studied organ, piano, singing and composition. He was the Assistant Director of Music at the King's School, Parramatta, a tutor in church music at Ridley College in Melbourne and in 1965 he was acting cathedral organist and master of the choristers at St Andrew's Cathedral in Sydney. Bartlett was an Anglican clergyman and wrote many compositions suitable for church performance. Bartlett was also a member of the Australian Hymn Book committee, and has been involved in the initiation of schemes for promoting the composition and performance of new liturgical music. George Matheson

1842 - 1906 Person Name: Rev. George Matheson Scripture: Isaiah 9:6 Author of "The Nativity" in Sacred Songs Matheson, George, D.D., was born at Glasgow, March 27, 1842, and although deprived of his eyesight in youth he passed a brilliant course at the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated M.A. in 1862. In 1868 he became the parish minister at Innellan; and subsequently of St. Bernard's, Edinburgh. He was the Baird Lecturer in 1881, and St. Giles Lecturer in 1882. He has published several important prose works. His poetical pieces were collected and published in 1890 as Sacred Songs, Edinburgh: W. Blackwood. In addition to his hymn "O Love that wilt not let me go" (q. v.), four others from his Sacred Songs are in Dr. A. C. Three doors there are in the temple. Prayer. Dr. Matheson informed us that these hymns, together with the rest of his Sacred Songs, 1890, were written at Bow, Dumbartonshire, in 1890. William Shrubsole

1760 - 1806 Scripture: Isaiah 9:6 Composer of "MILES' LANE" in The Hymnbook William Shrubsole (bap. 1760, d. 1806), organist. United Kingdom.When young, he sang in the choir at Canterbury Cathedral, He became organist at Bangor Cathedral, when he was dismissed for attending non-comformist meetings. He then became organist of Spa Fields Chapel, London, holding that post until his death. He was a successful teacher. He was an alto singer and sung at Westminster Abbey and Drury Lane churches. He knew Edward Perronet, who wrote the words to the hymn he composed music for. Perronet left Schrubsole property in his will. John Perry Not to be confused with W. (William) Shrubsole 1759-1829 bank clerk and hymn writer.

Jacob Henry Hall

1855 - 1941 Person Name: J. H. Hall Scripture: Isaiah 9:6 Composer of "[Joy to the world, the Lord is come]" in Crowning Day No. 2 Jacob Henry Hall, 1855-1941 Born: January 2, 1855, near Harrisonburg, Virginia. Died: December 22, 1941. Buried: Dayton, Virginia. Son of farmer George G. Hall and Elizabeth Thomas Hall, Jacob attended singing schools taught by Timothy Funk when he was a boy. As his love of music progressed, he earned money by trapping quail and bought a German accordion; he soon learned to play one part while singing another. After he and his brother jointly purchased an organ, he taught himself to play hymn tunes, Gospel songs, and anthems. He went on to study music theory, harmony, and composition in Harrisonburg and elsewhere, and in 1877 attended a Normal Music School in New Market, Virginia, taught by Benjamin Unseld and P. J. Merges. Afterward, he partnered with H. T. Wartman for two years to conduct singing schools and conventions. In 1890, Hall attended Dana’s Musical Institute in Warren, Ohio, and a normal school run by George & F. W. Root at Silver Lake, New York. He later served as principal of the National Normal School of Music.
