Brethren, While We Sojourn Here

Author: Joseph Swain Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 240 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Brethren, while we sojourn here, Fight we must, but should not fear; Foes we have, but we’ve a friend, One that loves us to the end. Forward then with courage go, Long we shall not dwell below; Soon the joyful news will come, "Child, your Father calls—Come home!" 2 In the way a thousand snares Lie, to take us unawares; Satan, with malicious art, Watches each unguarded part: But, from Satan’s malice free, Saints shall soon victorious be; Soon the joyful news will come, "Child, your Father calls—Come home!" 3 But, of all the foes we meet, None so oft mislead our feet, None betray us into sin, Like the foes that dwell within. Yet let nothing spoil your peace, Christ will also conquer these; Then the joyful news will come, "Child, your Father calls—Come home!" Used With Tune: MESSIAH Text Sources: Walworth Hymns (London: J. Matthews, 1792)

Wake the Song of Jubilee

Author: Leonard Bacon, 1802-1881 Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 202 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Wake the song of jubilee, Let it echo o’er the sea! Now is come the promised hour, Jesus reigns with sov’reign pow'r. Come, you nations, join and sing, To the throne your praises bring; Let it sound from shore to shore: "Jesus reigns forevermore." 2 Now the desert lands rejoice, And the islands join their voice; Yes, the whole creation sings, "Jesus is the King of kings." See the ransomed millions stand, Palms of conquest in their hands; This before the throne their strain: "Hell is vanquished, death is slain." 3 Blessing, honor, glory, might Are the Paschal Victim's right; Thrones and pow'rs in homage fall, To the Lamb and Lord of all, Time has nearly reached its sum; Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" Jesus, whom all worlds adore, Come, and reign forevermore. Topics: Second Coming Used With Tune: ST. GEORGE'S WINDSOR

Jesus, Full of Love Divine

Author: Benjamin Gough Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 14 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Jesus, full of love divine, I am Thine and Thou art mine; Let me live and die to prove Thine unutterable love. More and more of love I claim, Glowing still with quenchless flame; All my heart to Thee aspires, Yearns with infinite desire. 2. Every thought, design, and word Burns with love to Thee, my Lord; Body, soul, and spirit joined, All in love to Thee combined. Ever since I saw Thy face, Proved Thy plenitude of grace, Chose Thee as the better part— Love has filled and fired my heart. 3. Jesus, Savior, Thou art mine; Jesus, all I have is Thine; Never shall the altar fire, Kindled on my heart, expire. Love my darkness shall illume, Love shall all my sins consume: Sweetly then I die to prove An eternity of love! Used With Tune: GUIDE

Let thy kind protection be O'er our commerce on the sea. Open, Lord, thy bounteous hand; Bless our people, bless our land. 3 Let our rulers ever be Men that love and honor thee; Let the pow'rs by thee ordained Be in righteousness maintained. Hasten, Lord, the Glorious Time

Author: Harriet Auber Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 298 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Hasten, Lord, the glorious time When, beneath Messiah’s sway, Every nation, every clime, Shall the Gospel call obey. Mightiest kings His power shall own, Heathen tribes His name adore; Satan and his host o’erthrown, Bound in chains, shall hurt no more. 2. As when soft and gentle showers Fall upon the thirsty plain, Springing grass and blooming flowers, Clothe the wilderness again; So Thy Spirit shall descend, Softening every stony heart, And its sweetest influence lend, All that’s lovely to impart. 3. Then shall wars and tumults cease, Then be banished grief and pain, Righteousness and joy and peace, Undisturbed shall ever reign. Bless we, then, our gracious Lord, Ever praise His glorious hame; All His mighty acts record; All His wondrous love proclaim. This hymn was originally written in 4-line verses. With a tune of a different meter, the omitted verse 6 can be used, as well: Time shall sun and moon obscure, Seas be dried, and rocks be riv’n. But His reign shall still endure, Endless as the days of Heav’n. Used With Tune: ELTHAM Text Sources: Spirit of the Psalms, 1829

Watchman, tell us of the night

Author: John Bowring Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 865 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Watchman, tell us of the night, What its signs of promise are: Traveler, o'er yon mountain's height, See that glory-beaming star! Watchman, doth its beauteous ray Aught of joy or hope foretell? Traveler, yes; it brings the day, Promised day of Israel. 2 Watchman, tell us of the night; Higher yet that star ascends: Traveler, blessedness and light, Peace and truth, its course portends. Watchman, will its beams alone Gild the spot that gave them birth? Traveler, ages are its own, And it bursts o'er all the earth! 3 Watchman, tell us of the night; For the morning seems to dawn: Traveler, darkness takes its flight; Doubt and terror are withdrawn. Watchman, let thy wanderings cease; Hie thee to thy quiet home. Traveler, lo, the Prince of Peace, Lo, the Son of God, is come! Amen.
