I've Found a Friend, O Such a Friend!

Author: James G. Small Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 392 hymnals Scripture: Romans 8:38-39 Lyrics: 1 I've found a Friend, O such a Friend! He loved me ere I knew him; he drew me with the cords of love, and thus he bound me to him; and round my heart still closely twine those ties which naught can sever, for I am his, and he is mine, forever and forever. 2 I've found a Friend, O such a Friend! He bled, he died to save me; and not alone the gift of life, but his own self he gave me! Naught that I have mine own I'll call, I'll hold it for the Giver, my heart, my strength, my life, my all are his, and his forever. 3 I've found a Friend, O such a Friend! All pow'r to him is given, to guard me on my onward course, and bring me safe to heaven: eternal glory gleams afar, to nerve my faint endeavor: so now to watch, to work, to war; and then to rest forever. 4 I've found a Friend, O such a Friend! So kind and true and tender, so wise a Counselor and guide, so mighty a defender! From him who loves me now so well what pow'r my soul can sever? Shall life or death, shall earth or hell? No! I am his forever. How can it be Lyrics: 1 And can it be that I should gain an interest in the Savior's blood? Died he for me, who caused his pain– for me, who caused his bitter death? Amazing love! How can it be that you, my Lord, should die for me? Refrain: Amazing love! How can it be that you, my Lord, should die for me?! 2 He left his Father's throne above– so free, so infinite his grace– emptied himself of all but love, and bled for Adam's helpless race! What mercy this, immense and free, for, O my God, it found out me! [Refrain] 3 Long my imprisoned spirit lay fast bound in sin and nature's night. Your sunrise turned that night to day; I woke– the dungeon flamed with light! My chains fell off, your voice I knew; I rose, went out, and followed you. Alive in him, my living Head, and clothed in righteousness divine, bold I approach the eternal throne and claim the crown, through Christ, my own. Jesus, Priceless Treasure

Author: Johann Franck, 1618-77; Catherine Winkworth, 1827-78 Meter: 6.6.5.6.6.5.7.8.6 Appears in 133 hymnals Scripture: Romans 8:38-39 Lyrics: 1 Jesus, priceless treasure, Fount of purest pleasure, Truest friend to me. Ah, how long in anguish Shall my spirit languish, Yearning, Lord, for Thee? Thou art mine, O Lamb divine! I will suffer naught to hide Thee, Naught I ask beside Thee. 2 In Thine arms I rest me; Foes who would molest me Cannot reach me here. Though the earth be shaking, Ev'ry heart be quaking, Jesus calms my fear. Lightnings flash And thunder crash; yet, though sin and hell assail me, Jesus will not fail me. 3 Satan, I defy thee; Death, I now decry thee; Fear, I bid thee cease. World, thou shalt not harm me Nor thy threats alarm me While I sing of peace. God's great pow'r Guards ev'ry hour; Earth and all its depths adore Him, Silent bow before Him. 4 Hence, all earthly treasure! Jesus is my pleasure, Jesus is my choice. Hence all empty glory! Naught to me the story Told with tempting voice. Pain or loss, Or shame or cross, Shall not from my Savior move me Since He deigns to love me. 5 Evil world, I leave thee; Thou canst not deceive me, Thine appeal is vain. Sin that once did blind me, Get thee far behind me, Come not forth again. Past thy hour, O pride and pow'r; Sinful life, thy bonds I sever, Leave thee now forever. 6 Hence, all fear and sadness! For the Lord of gladness, Jesus, enters in. Those who love the Father, Though the storms may gather, Still have peace within. Yea, whate'er I here must bear, Thou art still my purest pleasure, Jesus, priceless treasure! Used With Tune: JESU, MEINE FREUDE

Romans 8:31-39: Let Christian faith and hope dispel

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 24 hymnals Scripture: Romans 8:31-39 First Line: Let Christian faith and hope dispel Lyrics: Let Christian faith and hope dispel the fears of guilt and woe; The Lord Almighty is our friend, and who can prove a foe? He who his Son, most dear and loved, gave up for us to die. Shall he not all things freely give that goodness can supply? Behold the best, the greatest gift, of everlasting love! Behold the pledge of peace below, and perfect bliss above! Where is the judge who can condemn, since God hath justified? Who shall charge those with guilt or crime for whom the Saviour died? 142 The Saviour died, but rose again triumphant from the grave; And pleads our cause at God’s right hand, omnipotent to save. Who then can e’er divide us more from Jesus and his love, Or break the sacred chain that binds the earth to heav’n above? Let troubles rise, and terrors frown, and days of darkness fall; Through him all dangers we’ll defy, and more than conquer all. Nor death nor life, nor earth nor hell, nor time’s destroying sway, Can e’er efface us from his heart, or make his love decay. Each future period that will bless, as it has bless’d the past; He loved us from the first of time, he loves us to the last.
