God is working his purpose out, as year succeeds to year

Author: Arthur C. Ainger, 1841-1919 Meter: Irregular Appears in 93 hymnals Topics: Advent III Year B Lyrics: 1 God is working his purpose out, as year succeeds to year, God is working his purpose out, and the time is drawing near; nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 2 From utmost east to utmost west, wherever feet have trod, by the mouth of many messengers goes forth the voice of God, 'Give ear to me, ye continents, ye isles, give ear to me, that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.' 3 What can we do to work God's work, to prosper and increase the love of God in all mankind, the reign of the Prince of peace? What can we do to hasten the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea? 4 March we forth in the strength of God, with the banner of Christ unfurled, that the light of the glorious gospel of truth may shine throughout the world; fight we the fight with sorrow and sin, to set their captives free, that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 5 All we can do is nothing worth unless God blesses the deed; vainly we hope for the harvest-tide till God gives life to the seed; yet nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:36-39 Used With Tune: BENSON

Oft in danger, oft in woe

Author: Henry Kirke White, 1785-1806 Meter: 7.7.7.7 Appears in 348 hymnals Topics: Lent II Year A; Lent III Year B; Proper 23 Year C; Second Sunday Before Advent Year B; Lent Lyrics: 1 Oft in danger, oft in woe, onward, Christians, onward go; bear the toil, maintain the strife, strengthened with the bread of life. 2 Onward, Christians, onward go, join the war, and face the foe; will ye flee in danger's hour? Know ye not your Captain's power? 3 Let not sorrow dim your eye; soon shall every tear be dry: let not fears your course impede; great your strength, if great your need. 4 Let your drooping hearts be glad; march in heavenly armour clad; fight, nor think the battle long: soon shall victory wake your song. 5 Onward then in battle move; more than conquerors ye shall prove: though opposed by many a foe, Christian soldiers, onward go. Scripture: Ephesians 6:11 Used With Tune: UNIVERSITY COLLEGE

Wild and Lone the Prophet's Voice

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr., b. 1944 Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 9 hymnals Topics: Advent III C Lyrics: 1 Wild and lone the prophet's voice Echoes through the desert still, Calling us to make a choice, Bidding us to do God's will: "Turn from sin and be baptized; Cleanse your heart and mind and soul. Quitting all the sins you prized, Yield your life to God's control." 2 "Bear the fruit repentance sows: Lives of justice, truth, and love. Trust no other claim than those; Set your heart on things above. Soon the Lord will come in pow'r, Burning clean the threshing floor: Then will flames the chaff devour; Wheat alone shall fill God's store." 3 With such preaching stark and bold John proclaimed salvation near, And his timeless warnings hold Words of hope to all who hear. So we dare to journey on, Led by faith through ways untrod, Till we come at last like John To behold the Lamb of God. Used With Tune: ABERYSTWYTH

He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free, to take away transgression, and rule in equity. 2 He comes with succour speedy to those who suffer wrong; to help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong; to give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light, whose souls, condemned and dying, were precious in his sight. 3 He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth, and love, joy, hope, like flowers, spring in his path to birth: before him on the mountains shall peace, the herald, go; and righteousness in fountains from hill to valley flow. 4 Arabia's desert-ranger to him shall bow the knee; the Ethiopian stranger his glory come to see; with offerings of devotion ships from the isles shall meet, to pour the wealth of ocean in tribute at his feet. 5 Kings shall bow down before him, and gold and incense bring; all nations shall adore him, his praise all people sing: to him shall prayer unceasing and daily vows ascend; his kingdom still increasing, a kingdom without end. 6 O'er every foe victorious, he on his throne shall rest; from age to age more glorious, all-blessing and all-blest: the tide of time shall never his covenant remove; his name shall stand for ever, his changeless name of love. Scripture: 1 John 4:8 Used With Tune: CRÜGER

When the King Shall Come Again

Author: Christopher M. Idle, b. 1938 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 20 hymnals Topics: Advent III A Lyrics: 1 When the King shall come again, All his pow'r revealing, Splendor shall announce his reign, Life and joy and healing: Earth no longer in decay, Hope no more frustrated; This is God's redemption day Longingly awaited. 2 In the desert trees take root Fresh from his creation; Plants and flow'rs and sweetest fruit Join the celebration; Rivers spring up from the earth, Barren lands adorning; Valleys, this is your new birth, Mountains, greet the morning! 3 Strengthen feeble hands and knees, Fainting hearts, be cheerful! God, who comes for such as these, Seeks and saves the fearful. Deaf ears hear the silent tongues Sing away their weeping; Blind eyes see the lifeless ones Walking, running, leaping. 4 There God's highway shall be seen Where no roaring lion, Nothing evil or unclean, Walks the road to Zion. Ransomed people homeward bound, All your praises voicing, See your Lord with glory crowned, Share in his rejoicing! Scripture: Isaiah 35 Used With Tune: GAUDEAMUS PARITER
