Christ on the Cross

Author: Richard Lee Appears in 30 hymnals First Line: When I view my Saviour bleeding Lyrics: 1 When I view my Saviour bleeding, For my sins, upon the tree; Oh, how wondrous!--how exceeding Great his love appears to me! Floods of deep distress and anguish, To impede his labors, came; Yet they all could not extinguish Love's eternal, burning flame. 2 Now redemption is completed, Full salvation is procured; Death and Satan are defeated, By the sufferings he endured. Now the gracious Mediator Risen to the courts of bliss, Claims for me, a sinful creature, Pardon, righteousness, and peace! 3 Sure such infinite affection Lays the highest claims to mine; All my powers, without exception, Should in fervent praises join. Jesus, fit me for thy service; Form me for thyself alone; I am thy most costly purchase,-- Take possession of thine own. Holy Father! Thou Hast Taught Us

Author: John M. Neale Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 179 hymnals First Line: Holy Father, Thou hast taught us Lyrics: 1 Holy Father, Thou hast taught us We should live to Thee alone; Year by year, Thy hand hath brought us On thro’ dangers oft unknown. When we wandered, Thou hast found us, When we doubted, sent us light; Still Thine arm has been around us, All our paths were in Thy sight. 2 In the world will foes assail us, Craftier, stronger far than we; And the strife will never fail us, Till our death shall set us free; Therefore, Lord, we come believing Thou canst give the power we need, Through the prayer of faith receiving Strength, the Spirit’s strength, indeed. 3 We would trust in Thy protecting, Wholly rest upon Thine arm, Follow wholly Thy directing, Thou our only guard from harm; Keep us from our own undoing, Help us turn to Thee when tried; Still our footsteps, Father! viewing Keep us ever at Thy side. When Will People Cease Their Fighting?

Author: Constance Cherry Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 5 hymnals Lyrics: 1 When will people cease their fighting? When will armies wage no war, nations conquer not their neighbour, weapons idle, used no more? When will guns and bombs be silent? When will captives be set free? All creation groans in longing for the world's true liberty. 2 Floods and earthquakes, drought and famine plague the world with awesome ill, but far greater is war's horror caused by human, stubborn will. Blest are those who, working, praying, purpose in their hearts to be instruments of peace, committed to the nations' harmony. 3 As we strive for peace with vigour, hoping to be shown the way, we are strengthened in the knowledge of a future, perfect day; for we know that deeper, richer peace is ours when Christ shall reign: then will all our swords be plowshares and God's children free from pain.
