Lawrence, Jennie Ree ============= For the first seventeen years of his life Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (b. Wilton, IA, 1856; d. Los Angeles, CA, 1932) lived on an Iowa farm, where friends and neighbors often gathered to sing. Gabriel accompanied them on the family reed organ he had taught himself to play. At the age of sixteen he began teaching singing in schools (following in his father's footsteps) and soon was acclaimed as a fine teacher and composer. He moved to California in 1887 and served as Sunday school music director at the Grace Methodist Church in San Francisco. After moving to Chicago in 1892, Gabriel edited numerous collections of anthems, cantatas, and a large number of songbooks for the Homer Rodeheaver, Hope, and E. O. Excell publishing companies. He composed hundreds of tunes and texts, at times using pseudonyms such as Charlotte G. Homer. The total number of his compositions is estimated at about seven thousand. Honorato T. Reza

1912 - 2000 Person Name: Honorato Reza Scripture: John 12:20-32 Translator of "¿Sabes tú de Cristo?" in Celebremos Su Gloria Born: October 27, 1912, Alahuixtlan, Guerrero, Mexico. Died: 2000, Kansas City. Reza’s education began at age six in the home of a Protestant pastor, and continued in a boarding school in Teloloapan, and later in Mexico City. Reza became a Christian at age 11 after hearing a sermon by Ruth Delgado. He turned away from the faith as a teen, but was reconciled in 1930. He graduated from the Bible Institute in Mexico City in 1935, and took his first pastorate in Matías Romero, Oaxaca. Reza enrolled at the University of Pasadena, California, in 1937, received his bachelor’s degree in 1939, and returned to Mexico City in 1935 to open a new church. A few months later, he married Ernestina Tentori. Continuing post graduate studies in parallel with his pastoral duties, Reza earned a degree from the University of Mexico in 1941. H. Orton Wiley invited him to Pasadena University the following year to teach Spanish and literature. In addition to his responsibilities in Pasadena, Reza was dean and professor at a Bible college in Los Angeles for Hispanic pastors of the Church of the Nazarene in Southern California. In 1944, the General Assembly of the Church of the Nazarene created a Spanish radio program, with Reza as its director. He moved with his family to Kansas City in 1946 to support that effort. For 23 years, he hosted the radio program La Hora Nazarena, which was eventually broadcast on 700 stations. In 1980, Reza became founding president of the Nazarene Seminary in Mexico City, guiding it in its early years of development. Edmund S. Lorenz

Mund, ==================== Lorenz, Edmund Simon. (North Lawrence, Stark County, Ohio, July 13, 1854--July 10, 1942, Dayton, Ohio). Son of Edward Lorenz, a German-born shoemaker who turned preacher, served German immigrants in northwestern Ohio, and was editor of the church paper, Froehliche Botschafter, 1894-1900. Edmund graduated from Toledo High School in 1870, taught German, and was made a school principal at a salary of $20 per week. At age 19, he moved to Dayton to become the music editor for the United Brethren Publishing House. He graduated from Otterbein College (B.A.) in 1880, studied at Union Biblical Seminary, 1878-1881, then went to Yale Divinity School where he graduated (B.D.) in 1883. He then spent a year studying theology in Leipzig, Germany. He was ordained by the Miami [Ohio] Conference of the United Brethren in Christ in 1877. The following year, he married Florence Kumler, with whom he had five children. Upon his return to the United States, he served as pastor of the High Street United Brethren Church in Dayton, 1884-1886, and then as president of Lebanon Valley College, 1887-1889. Ill health led him to resign his presidency. In 1890 he founded the Lorenz Publishing Company of Dayton, to which he devoted the remainder of his life. For their catalog, he wrote hymns, and composed many gospel songs, anthems, and cantatas, occasionally using pseudonyms such as E.D. Mund, Anna Chichester, and G.M. Dodge. He edited three of the Lorenz choir magazines, The Choir Leader, The Choir Herald, and Kirchenchor. Prominent among the many song-books and hymnals which he compiled and edited were those for his church: Hymns for the Sanctuary and Social Worship (1874), Pilgerlieder (1878), Songs of Grace (1879), The Otterbein Hymnal (1890), and The Church Hymnal (1934). For pastors and church musicians, he wrote several books stressing hymnody: Practical Church Music (1909), Church Music (1923), Music in Work and Worship (1925), and The Singing Church (1938). He has written widely on music, from Monteverdi to Stravinsky, but is particularly known for his work on Beethoven, the history of absolute music, and the intersection between music, philosophy and theology. David Hurd

b. 1950 Person Name: David Hurd, b. 1950 Scripture: John 12:20-33 Composer of "GAUDEAMUS DOMINO" in With One Voice David Hurd (b. Brooklyn, New York, 1950) was a boy soprano at St. Gabriel's Church in Hollis, Long Island, New York. Educated at Oberlin College and the University of North Carolina, he has been professor of church music and organist at General Theological Seminary in New York since 1976. In 1985 he also became director of music for All Saints Episcopal Church, New York. Hurd is an outstanding recitalist and improvisor and a composer of organ, choral, and instrumental music. In 1987 David Hurd was awarded the degree of Doctor of Music, honoris causa, by the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale. The following year he received honorary doctorates from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Berkeley, California, and from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois.
