1934 - 2020 Composer of "DOXOLOGY" in The Presbyterian Hymnal Rv Richard Kinsey Avery USA 1934-2020Born in the Central Valley of CA, he attended schools at Exeter, CA, where his family was active in the First Presbyterian Church. He decided to become a Christian minister at age 14 while at a Presbyterian youth conference. He attended Redlands U, Redlands, CA. He then attended Union Theological Seminary, NYC. He participated in the University Choir and associated with Christian friends there. He became pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Port Jervis, NY, (FPCPJ) for 40 years. Musically inclined, he composed a variety of songs (both lyrics and music), mostly with his close friend, Rv Donald S Marsh. Avery was commentator, preacher, and song leader for the duo, while Marsh conducted drama events and conducted three choirs. Together, they wrote over 150 published hymns, carols, and anthems. In 1967 the two founded Proclamation Productions, with sales later handled by Hope Publishing Company. With Marsh, he led conference and church assemblies in new forms of worship in all 50 states from the late 1960s into the early 2000s. These events included 30 years of summer seminars at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, NM. At Port Jervis, NY, Avery founded a community center for poor people called the ‘Hope Center’. He was also a member of and chairman of the board of directors of Mercy Community Hospital. His church, FPCPJ, was a prominent center for creative forms of worship, music, and drama, providing many concerts and theatrical events for the community. He was also involved with Westminster Presbyterian Church in Santa Fe, where he served as music leader after retirement from the NY church. In 2003 he founded a small magazine, ‘Santa Fe Theologians’, serving as editor, and later, as manager of Santa Fe Theologians Institutes, which held public forums on contemporary issues. He was also a member of the World Affairs Forum, the Council on International Relations, the Santa Fe Symposium, and the Coro de Camara chorale ensemble. He directed and composed for the ballet orchestra at the King’s Theater, and belonged the British Royal Society of Musicians. George Coles

1792 - 1858 Adapter of "[Praise God from whom all blessings flow]" in African American Heritage Hymnal Rv George Coles United Kingdom 1792-1858. Born at Stewkley, England, he was converted at age 13 under John Wesley's ministry. He began preaching at age 22 and emigrated to America in 1818. He was a Methodist supply preacher on the Long Island circuit in NY and CT. The following year he became a member of the NY Conference and served several of the larger churches for several years. He married Belinda Wilson in 1820, and they had five children. They lived in several towns in NY during their lives. He served as editor of the “Christian Advocate and Journal” for 12 years, and the “Sunday School Advocate” for several years thereafter. He was a musician of some ability, and a good singer. He loved talking with children and often drew them around him. He authored “A concordance of the Holy Scriptures”, “Heroinces of Methodism”, and fiour other books. He died and is buried in Somers, NY. He kept journals, covering 50 years of activities. John Perry

Jacob Henry Hall

1855 - 1941 Person Name: J. H. H. Arranger of "[Praise God from whom all blessings flow]" in Crowning Day No. 4 Jacob Henry Hall, 1855-1941 Born: January 2, 1855, near Harrisonburg, Virginia. Died: December 22, 1941. Buried: Dayton, Virginia. Son of farmer George G. Hall and Elizabeth Thomas Hall, Jacob attended singing schools taught by Timothy Funk when he was a boy. As his love of music progressed, he earned money by trapping quail and bought a German accordion; he soon learned to play one part while singing another. After he and his brother jointly purchased an organ, he taught himself to play hymn tunes, Gospel songs, and anthems. He went on to study music theory, harmony, and composition in Harrisonburg and elsewhere, and in 1877 attended a Normal Music School in New Market, Virginia, taught by Benjamin Unseld and P. J. Merges. Afterward, he partnered with H. T. Wartman for two years to conduct singing schools and conventions. In 1890, Hall attended Dana’s Musical Institute in Warren, Ohio, and a normal school run by George & F. W. Root at Silver Lake, New York. He later served as principal of the National Normal School of Music.
